I can empathize with people who hate Star Trek, I used to when I was younger--I used to think it was hammy nerdy unimaginative sci-fi. Then when I bothered watching more of it, I realized that while the worst of it was indeed all those things (TOS crew reenacting the O.K. Corral gunfight, tribbles, Wesley Crusher and his romantic life), the best was imaginatively rousing. Moreover, the eclecticism of the scenarios, which was initially jarring, is partly reconciled when one considers the vastness and variety that an infinite universe entails. In comparison, the culture and technology of Star Wars is necessarily homogeneous because the "expanded universe" is a partial galaxy, and the inventiveness is fairly limited. (Now I think about it, Star Trek is a lot like Doctor Who in its eclecticism (and horrible taste in some episodes), yet I've grown to like both of them)
The other great thing about the franchise is the commentary on humanity. It's really the only cinematic science fiction that wasn't based on a written work to have symbolism or satire or any literary merit at all.
Easily the greatest thing is Captain Jean Luc Picard, though.
Anyway, I think the trailer looks good but the precocious kid plotline renews memories of aforementioned Wesley Crusher and leaves me flush with anger (as if my menopause wasn't bad enough).
