Whole hell of alot better then the first trailer.

Looks sweet. The casting based on character resemblence is impressive.

Simon Pegg = Win.

Hopefully this movie is as awesome as the trailer looks.

It looks like it might be good, not a good Star trek movie but a good scifi movie.
I do wanna see more Pegg.

I think it's a smart move. It'll probably attract non-Star Trek fans who are just curious about the genre.

Yeah that trailer made me want to watch it, and I've always disliked Star Trek.
DO NOT WANT.

I agree. Looks like it'll be a good movie, but where is the brighter future that made Star Trek different from so many other darker sci-fi series? In DS9 it works because they're in an all-out war, and in Enterprise, it works where they have it in part because they're still relatively crawling out of the darkest of darks and into that future. I really think they got confused about what Star Trek was with the popularity of First Contact. We'll see, though.

EDIT: After reading the Wiki entry, I'm now less pessimistic about there being Star Trek-ness in it after all. Still very wary, but Abrams and all might not miss the point in the end.

Looks good but it doesn't look like Star Trek to me. :(

Oh and Pegg's accent wasn't horrible.
nope.

Opening pisses me off, but I hate child actors. The rest looks good though.

Of course it doesn't look "Star Trek," that's because things that look "Star Trek" tend to suck.

If star trek things suck they should just make something new rather than pissing off everyone who actually likes Trek.

DS9, Wrath of Khan, First Contact, The Voyage Home, disagree with this sentiment.

DS9 doesn't.
nope.
2008-11-17, 6:11 PM #19
That's not what I mean. I'm talking about the excessive geekiness and technobabble. Like Voyager.

Star Trek is supposed to be about criticizing the human condition. This movie likely won't do that and will be mostly action, unfortunately. It is clear, however, that it's not just a giant fanwank and may actually be, in general, a good movie, which is what Star Trek needs the most to continue as a franchise.

Actually, neither do Wrath of Khan or First Contact, really. Voyage Home, yes, but that was sort of Star Trek lite. I'd probably point my finger at The Undiscovered County for the most "Star Trek" of the movies. Unfortunately, the most "Star Trek" like things would not likely work well as movies.

Cool :)

I am excited.

Holy hell this movie looks awful. An angry spock? A dumb corvette driving over a cliff scene? A gratuitous Uhura undressing scene? Simon Pegg (as much as I love him) as a comic relief character?

I'm not a big trek fan to begin with, I've enjoyed some of the movies and a couple of the better episodes of the show, but this looks to be the worst of them all.

Spock is part human, and on several occasions he had to deal with those human emotions throughout the series. Spock getting angry isn't exactly falling outside the canon.

Plus Uhura, Pegg and Corvettes are all totally friggin sexy.

I can empathize with people who hate Star Trek, I used to when I was younger--I used to think it was hammy nerdy unimaginative sci-fi. Then when I bothered watching more of it, I realized that while the worst of it was indeed all those things (TOS crew reenacting the O.K. Corral gunfight, tribbles, Wesley Crusher and his romantic life), the best was imaginatively rousing. Moreover, the eclecticism of the scenarios, which was initially jarring, is partly reconciled when one considers the vastness and variety that an infinite universe entails. In comparison, the culture and technology of Star Wars is necessarily homogeneous because the "expanded universe" is a partial galaxy, and the inventiveness is fairly limited. (Now I think about it, Star Trek is a lot like Doctor Who in its eclecticism (and horrible taste in some episodes), yet I've grown to like both of them)

The other great thing about the franchise is the commentary on humanity. It's really the only cinematic science fiction that wasn't based on a written work to have symbolism or satire or any literary merit at all.

Easily the greatest thing is Captain Jean Luc Picard, though.

Anyway, I think the trailer looks good but the precocious kid plotline renews memories of aforementioned Wesley Crusher and leaves me flush with anger (as if my menopause wasn't bad enough).

Star trek I, V, IX, and X are arguably the worst

I was slightly worried about it after seeing the trailer with Bond, but reading about the movie, and watching the trailer a few more times has made me a lot more hopeful.

One neat thing they've said about this movie is that they are trying to portray other Starfleet captains as strong leaders, and not just lame side characters.

I'm really looking forward to it.

Yet you derived your screen name from Star Trek I!

I liked the Motion Picture myself... Although there are times when it suffers from taking a story that was written to be a 45 minute long television episode and stretching it into a 2 hour movie.

:P I can still appreciate all 10 of them.
I'm just more aware that some are much more boring than others and would be more difficult for non-hardcore trekkies to get into.
