So I wonder where they are going to go from here?
Kind of hard to "get away" in a huge tanker.

I guess they can just get paid a ransom.

I wonder what will happen/they get away with.

I was reading a story about these pirates. Apparently, there is a whole city that is basically a pirate haven. It'd be so cool to just go there...

Didn't this just happen? What happened the last time?
2008-11-17, 8:47 PM #4
This is different.. it happened Saturday. In the article it says this is the most expensive cargo ever pirated.

These guys better get wise and start putting some defenses on their ships. Then we'll have true pirate action!

Tortuga!

Hey if they have a refinery, now they'll have gas and diesel for their pirate ships for the next 100 years.

They don't have to get away. All they have to do is threaten to dump it all overboard unless they get paid. Supertankers and stupid huge quantities of oil don't exactly grow on trees so the chances of getting paid and not shot are pretty high.

I'm not sure it's considered "cool" to go to Somalia...

The pirates probably stole it to fight the moocher and looter society in the name of the sacred dollar and return it to the rightful hands of the oil barons. Also, they're probably devastatingly handsome--like avenging angels.

Something is not being told, but I highly doubt they got that sick from getting near a box.
For something that radioactive to be in there .. um .. yea.. I doubt it. Wouldn't that leave residual radiation/radiate further than just near it, but not as bad?

You can ship things over sea and land that will make you very sick very quickly if you stay close to it over a period of time, even if it's in it's containment unit. They also could have broken the containment unit, it isn't that hard to break like all three layers by just being careless.

Odd.
Though (if it's radioactive) I though most of that kind of stuff got used (Made into armour or ammo or whatever) or stored/buried.
But if it's some crazy just hazardous stuff .. stupid fools!

Do you have any idea how large the seas around there even are? Or that "pirates" are frequently disguised as fishermen?

The Navy can't do ****. Big guns are useless when they've got a supertanker full of oil, and hostages.

I don't know how you do it, but every time you make a post, you get stupider.

This is a topic I care about, considering that I plan on working in the maritime(not necessarily shipping) industry. Its a more complicated issue than just blowing pirates up. Which is why it hasn't been solved yet. Probably the most efficient way would be to have cargoships travel in convoys, with hired gunships. Or we could just nuke Somalia and kill a ****load of people and be done with it.

Presumably there's some reason why they don't just hire private security guys with big guns to go on the ships? That seems like it would be a lot more effective than trying to use the Navy

Greenboy, if its a subject you're interested in, I'd suggest you learn your history. The US Navy can be quite effective against piracy. You need to see the whole picture. It's not just going up to the pirate ship and pulling the trigger.

Further, the Navy is not exactly useless against ships they don't want to destroy or ships with hostages. You think we roll up and say, "well damn. We don't want to shoot it, so I guess we'll just go home." Hell no.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Mainly because it means having like 6 more dudes onboard, making more than the average sailor. Sailors don't like seeing guys sitting around getting paid to do nothing. And what will you arm the private security guys with? Machine guns? The pirates will start using missiles.

Learn my history? That was 200 years ago. Pirates didn't have small speedboats and heavy weapons back then. Also, If I'm ever held hostage I hope you guys don't try to board the ship and get me shot.

I'm going to a school in Seattle once I turn 19. I'll be getting a 500 ton off shore, and 1600 ton near coastal mates license. So this is pretty relevant to my life.

Wood boats are a hobby, not my life.

Umm yeah... Neither did the Navy. You're arguing from ignorance and not giving us nearly enough credit. Just because you don't know how to handle a situation doesn't mean we don't.

You realize a SEAL team could most likely board the ship and find and rescue you and be gone before the pirates even knew they were there?

Unless, youknow, they had a gun to my head. You can't really sneak around that. I don't feel rescue plans are the answer though. These pirates need an example to show that if they attempt to take a ship, they'll probably die. It'd be great if the Navy could do that, but they havent done anything yet. Piracy has only really been prevalent in the past few years, it started picking up again in the late 80s.
