So I might be made redundant in a couple of days.

Which is bad.

So any vibes would be most lovingly held to my bosom in this, my hour of need.

So the story pretty much goes down like this: about 3 months ago or so we laid off 1 engineer, 1 member of our supply chain team, 2 draughtsmen and a site manager from the office and about half a dozen guys from the fab shop. We were anticipating the economic downturn and the company was made to be leaner - our office overheads are our biggest cost.

That day, there were 3 lads from my department who were clearly less experienced than me, so while I was sad that we'd be losing someone I was confident that I'd be keeping my job so I was very relieved.

Today we've been told that 2 more engineers (and a load of other staff) will be going at the end of the week. We've been ranked (same as before) and the bottom 2 scoring members of the team pack up their gear and leave. Last time, I was above 2 of the guys that are still here, but only marginally. If things have changed in the last few months I could be SCREWED.

:(

That said, today my boss offered to lend me his spare Guitar Hero guitar for a while, which I hope is a subtle way of telling me I'm ok.

But yeah, bummer.

Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Maybe that's a subtle way of saying "You're going to have a lot of time on your hands."

They laid of an engineer? where do you work?
2008-11-24, 7:12 PM #16
They say the key to keeping your job forever in the computer programming field is to write code so nasty, so indecipherable, so "WTF", into a mission critical application, and then you're the only person on the planet who can maintain that code.

Maybe you could so something similar in your field. :P

^^Haha! We'll see how it goes today. It's a straight race between me, a bloke who was there before I was (and who I outranked last time) and another more experienced bloke who started after me.

Well, if it will make you feel better, it's our fault across this side of the Pond that you lost your job.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Thanks for all undulations chaps: I've just been told I'm not in the bottom 2, but the two who are will have an interview in the morning where they may be able to climb up (and thus sink me). I'm also assuming if they can do this, I'd get a second chance too, but I doubt that the boss' minds can be changes from their decision today.

So, errr, tentative yay - potentially the full and proper yay will come tomorrow.

Hooray!

Job secure, at least until the next round of redundancies. No really, if they lay any more people off it'll be me.

But yay for now, Christmas isn't cancelled!

Well thats good for you but spare a thought for the 2 that DID get the push before xmas.
2008-11-28, 6:54 AM #35
Oh, don't think for a second I haven't beaten myself up over this for the last week. It's crap either way.
2008-12-04, 1:20 AM #36
Ha. My company announced recently (before Martyn posted this thread) that they were planning to make 40 redundancies from the 190-odd that work in the UK office, strongly hinting that it would be pretty much totally from the Product Engineering side (which I'm on).

Since it was more than 20 redundancies, it has to go through a long drawn out process including a 30-day consultation period. That period kicked off when the company filed the HR1 form with the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform earlier this week, so it's now public knowledge and I can talk about it.

In my job role (Software Developer), 16 out of 46 people are being proposed as redundant. I only joined the company 6 months ago (just before (literally a week) they introduced a recruitment freeze - that should have set some alarm bells ringing I guess) so on the one hand that won't do me any favours, but on the other hand I obviously have skills they decided they wanted so that should give me some advantage.

Blah, so yeah, since Martyn is safe (for now!) I've hijacked this thread for my misery.
2008-12-04, 1:40 AM #37
MegaVIBES.

Hope you do ok out of it. I fired off arseloads of job applications as soon as I found out: have you tried looking?
2008-12-04, 1:44 AM #38
Heck yes, as soon as they announced it I was reconnecting with all the recruitment agents that I'd been dealing with 6 months previously. I've got a few leads, but the job market is generally sluggish right before Christmas, so it's very slow going.

I'm not overly worried. You can call me arrogant, but I know I'm damn good at what I do, so won't be out of a job for long. :)
