You're standing at a crossroads with two possible paths. One of them leads to heaven, one of them leads to hell. There are two brothers there as well. Only they know which path leads where. One of the brothers always tells the truth, while the other always lies, but you don't know which is which. You can only ask one question to either of the brothers (or both) in order to find out which path leads where.

What question do you ask?

Alright. I heard this one at camp. I hope it stumps you.

There is a dead body with a pool of blood around him. At the scene of the crime there are 5 bullets, 53 bicycles, and a knife. What happened? If you need additional information you have to ask.

It's obvious the man was stabbed by 53 angry bicyclists. And the bullets were already at the scene before the crime took place.

No, there is one answer, I've heard it before, but I can't remember it. One non-stupid answer, anyway.

I do think the bicycles are the pictures on the back of the cards. Either that or he was in Holland.

Close, cards are sometimes referred to as bicycles, or bikes. And since there are 53 cards, that means the man was cheating by bringing an extra card(52 cards in a deck).

close enough...There was no gun, just 5 bullets. bullets is another name for Aces in cards. If you have 5 aces...you are obviously cheating. Which is why there was one extra card..53 bicycles. He was stabbed to death.

This one is always fun:

A contestant in a famous TV show is asked to point on one of three boxes. One box contains a prize. The contestant points on one of the boxes. The host then opens one of the boxes he did not point on, and it contains nothing. The contestant must now choose which of the remaining two boxes to open. In order to have the highest probability of winning the prize, should he open the one he pointed at, or the other one?

Whichever box he points at, the probability is the same.

I've heard this before, and the answer is whichever he diddnt point at first time.

But, I've never understood it, because statistically he's got a 50% chance because there are 2 boxes.

That doesn't make any sense. The way the game works, the guy has to point a box, while the guy opens one he didn't point at. The fact that he pointed on "box B" the first time only means that "box C" was empty, which says nothing about the contents of "box A" nor "box B". So the probability is exactly the same.

If he chose the wrong box [edit: initially] then the host MUST have removed the other incorrect box, so by switching he guarantees a win.

Now, since there is a 2/3 chance of choosing the wrong box initially, he maximises his chance of winning by switching at the choice.

The only time switching will result in a loss is if he chose the right box initially, which only has a 1/3 chance.

Why MUST the host have removed the other empty box? There is just as much chance of the host removing the "correct" box.

You don't know if he chose the wrong box at the begining, because the host opens another box. So the right box could be either the one he picked at first or the one he didn't pick.

But initially, 1/3 chances are your going to pick the correct box. As far as odds go, you're better off switching after an empty box has been removed, because odds are, you initially picked an empty box.

No, the odds of you having picked an empty box are 50%.

There are three boxes. After the first turn you know one of them is empty, but that tells you nothing of the one you picked. So you're left with two boxes, one of which contains something, while the other doesn't. It's 50/50.

Your first choice controls what the host can do.

If you are correct initially, then he can remove whichever of the other two he likes. If you are initially wrong then he is restricted to only the other wrong one, which means the one he doesn't choose is the right one.

Since there is a higher chance of being wrong initially, it follows that to have the best chance of winning, you must switch.
