I'm not a big bush fan (even though I voted for him twice :P) but I will say he has a sense of humor.

As the man continued to scream from another room, Bush said: "That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want to know."

From the second link:

Throwing shoes at someone, or sitting so that the bottom of a shoe faces another person, is considered an insult among Muslims.

So there you go, that is why they throw shoes.

In Arab culture, throwing a shoe at somebody is a grave disrespect.

Of course not. It's just a shoe.

Someone's losing their job over this though.

I do not think everyone's worked up over the fact that its a shoe, but over the fact that it could have been anything that was thrown at him. Even if its something as insignificant as a shoe, it was probably the scariest moment in Bush's presidency, or life.

It's hard to tell but I thought Bush raised his hand and made an "it's okay" gesture after the shoes were thrown.

+1 bush

A rare +1

I don't know, the video makes it look like Bush has good reflexes, but I suspect the guy couldn't have taken longer/made it more apparent beforehand that he was about to throw the shoe. Even my grandmother could have probably dodged that.

I think I can speak for him, saying, a shoe is not very scary. (No it couldn't have been a shoe bomb .. they have security screening for that)
2008-12-14, 3:32 PM #34
I wonder if he'll wonder if that was really worth it while he sits in jail for the next couple of years.

Makes sense. I'm just saying that Bush was in a scenario where he probably expected to be completely secure (explains why the USSS was in the back room). He probably knew it was a shoe when the second one was thrown, but when someone shouts and then throws something at you that entire sense of security melts away. The world hates Bush, and I think Baghdad is at near the top of that list. Regardless of screening processes and security, **** can still happen.
