The Beginning of the End for LucasArts?
2004-08-14, 6:15 PM #1
http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/08/12/news_6104736.html

27 employees were laid off in April, and now this (50 more)? Sheesh, I didn't even know they employed more than 77 people. LucasArts is tanking, and quickly. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] Pretty sad.. I'll choose to remember them in their prime: during and a few years prior to the JK release. Note that this isn't necessarily the end, but I can see no good coming of this.

If the worst happens and LEC tanks, does that mean that all LEC games can be freely distributed? it's not like they could lose money on it if the whole company is gone....

I have yet to get JA and KOTOR. both games should be on the bargain rack soon.

Would this also mean we get JK's source code if LEC goes out?
I know how much ppl want it...

No. The copyrights are still owned by somebody.

Looking Glass Studios closed long ago, but you can't get the Thief games or System Shock games for free.

That's ridiculous. Most copyright law should be thrown out. Copyright used to mean that you can't claim someone else's work as your'e own, and fair enough. What the hell happened?

I'm strongly against DRM in any form.

I don't see why it's wrong. They made it, the source code is theirs to do with as they please. Don't like it? Go make your own stuff, simple.

You guys are talking crazy here. Lucas arts has the most succesful gaming francise in all of history. All they need to do to make money is release another star wars game and sell 800,000 copies.

Does LucasArts actually make games anymore or just stamp their name on it after somebody else developed it? The LEC of the (roughly) mid- to late-nineties died along time ago.

Legally, copyright can exist and be enforced many years after the copyright holder's death. Quite literally "over my dead body," or indeed, not even then...

Seriously, I agree with fourwood here. It's going to be like a horrible version of BF1942. I think Battlefront is going to be the craptacular game that finally brings LEC to its knees.

Maybe in a desperate bid to get money, LA will allow Ubisoft to make a Star Wars title. I wouldn't mind it one bit.

But then, odds of this happening are about nill to none.

Battlefront may suck, but Republic Commando will be awesome!

And BF1942 apparently has better graphics.

Lucas needs brought to his knees once and for all. So that he can stop killing all that we love. He has destroyed the legend that once was Anakin Skywalker. His bogus attempts at prequels have destroyed the Star Wars name. We must unite. We will raze Skywalker Ranch to the ground! Who's with me?

And what gives you any right to GL's IP?

Edit: Also, all this laying off means that Lucasarts will stop making games themselves and just publish them...that's mostly what they do now, so it won't be much different. Once RC comes out they'll either fire the devs who made it, or change their mind and make an EP or sequel depending on how successful it is.

you do realise, this would bring the creation of all star wars games to a screaching halt, since LEC is the company that autherises the creation of SW games...

perhaps this is insuing an age of great SW games. perhaps those geting laid off will be replaced by better people. or even, GL needs the money to work on EP3, so he takes the fun of making games?

So JK/MotS is it then. XvT, XWA were outsourced. JO and JA. I really don't see what LEC has to offer anymore. If they went back to their pattern of innovation that made them successful to begin with there might be a chance but I doubt that'll happen.

Since they front the money for said outsourced games, I think they can keep doing that. LEC might have just realized that there are better game developers out there and moving in that direction. I don't think it's a huge deal

LA may have some good sales with Republic Commando and Battlefront though. I just watched a couple segments about each on Electronic Playground and both games are looking very nice. Maybe if they can get passed the cliche of being a joke the games will do well.

That makes no sense.

What good is money to a copyright holder if they're dead? What were they planning? reanimating the dead to give them their monthly royalty checks? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Seriously, the checks probably go to the decendants, but what did they do to get the money? Why should they leech money off of someone else's work? Stuff should become public domain once the original owner dies. These laws are stifling to innovation and common sense.

what is w32.dasm? I tried googling for it and it came up with a bunch of keygen/ cracks sites.
