The Beginning of the End for LucasArts?
2004-08-15, 5:03 PM #41
Now doubt LucasArts has been on a steady decline. The idea of them giving rights to other developers isn't too bad.

As for Battlefront and Republic Commando, they might set the stage for the future of LEC. I look forward to both games, but I am more skeptical after every title is released with the supervision of LEC.

It's funny how LEC last so long in the first place...

w32dasm is a disassembler. All it does is let you decompile code into assembly, which is virtually useless outside hacking and small changes. Removing CD key checks, a checksum killer, etc.

I could care less about LucasArts.

Seriously though, I don't give a ****, except for the hardworking people who lost their jobs (please note that this does not necessarily mean all of them >.> ). They make crappy games for a few years and look what happens. Or maybe I've been feeling a bit disillusioned with games lately. That's probably it.

In 1998 LucasArts took on a whole new corporate attitude and direction. It's unfortunate that direction had to be down into the ****ter. Since then, they've released few classics, all outsourced for development. Yeah, classics from LEC since 1998? Knights of the Old Republic? Maybe like, Force Commander for some people? X-Wing Alliance, maybe. It's a pathetic record because LEC made themselves known as a record holder for classic games.

KotOR and XWA are some of the better games that have come out of LEC in the past 5 years. There have been plenty of average to kind of good games, but very few that people will be reminiscing about for years to come.

Is LEC closing/downsizing so that more resources can be dedicated to ruining StarWars films instead?

Rogue Squadron and Rogue Leader were pretty nice games, as was Bounty Hunter, Clone Wars and Battle For Naboo. But then they did Rebel Strike and...yeah. Way to massacre a great engine!

I'd like to point out that KotOR is made by BIOWARE! A GOD among developers. Don't give LEC any credit for their incredible work.

Battlefront prolly has less polygons in the models to be able to to very detailed enviroments, i mean like the screenshots show of Endor, none of the standard BF1942 maps are that detailed, i mean all the tree's and grass and everything. i even think there is water reflections as well.
2004-08-16, 1:09 PM #58
If the gameplay is as good as BF:1942 or BF:V, no one will complain too much about the graphics

The console version of Battlefront was reviewed in my PSM issue. It recieved a 8/10, but the biggest flaw of the game is the lack of multiplayer game modes. You mostly either just capture a base and kill enemies. There is no capture the flag, escort mission, or bomb tag. PSM continues to state that the game could had use more developing time. More maps and balancing would make the game better according to them. Lastly, they mentioned that the auto aim is over zealous in its effectiveness, but that can be turned off.

Damn that says a lot about star wars fans in general "If it's got the same gameplay as this game that came out two years ago, about the same graphics, but has Stormtrooper and Rebel skins, we'll buy it!"

It's been that way for years, and it isn't just SW fans. Ask hardcore CSers if they'd purchase a CS clone that had the exact gameplay with better graphics. Almost all of them would say yes. It isn't just LEC either...game design itself has been absolutely boring as of late. Recycling the same old tired concepts. Sadly, the few innovative games are ignored.

Also...am I the only one who was bored into oblivion by KOTOR? I can't seem to play the game for more than 30 minutes without falling asleep. I haven't been that bored since Dune: Chapterhouse.

Here's to another boring year in game design. I'm really glad that I didn't jump on the Doom 3 bandwagon as well...I played it a bit at my friends house, and I must say, the SomethingAwful review was dead on.

I don' think anyone will argue that the first part of the game was boring as hell. It got really good once you did the Jedi training. That when the action picked up and the story really started to develop.

Yeah, I am scared of the fact that it only has 15 maps. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory had 6 maps and that was released free.

No.

W32DASM (Short for Win32 Disassembler) will give you the assembly code for JK.exe. To make a checksum killer you'd need to find the point in the code where it checks the checksum and halts the connection progress. Then you could open your faviourite hex editor and change je/jne to jmp making it always jump.. or the other way around.

You cannot decompile JK.exe to get the source code. Besides, modifying JK.exe is not allowed by the EULA.
