i actually thought it took 2/3 majority to change the state constitution...?

Why are we talking about the bible in a thread about legal partnership and social prejudice? Religious people don't hate gays because of their bible. Their bible hates gays because gays scare them. We need to talk less about religion, and more about the fundamental requirements for hating gay people: Lack of empathy, understanding, and respect. This is the issue, not who's invisible friend hates who. America's legal system isn't (supposed to be) subject to your superstitions.

the problem is that there are a whole lot of religious fundementalists who quite clearly HAVE NOT read the bible at all and just take what their pastor (or equivilant) reads to them.

So it may have been presumptuous of him, but there are people who claim to follow the bible as closely as they can and who live by it (and want others to do the same) who have not actualy read the thing themselves.

Best quote that made a joke out of the bible was when the wrestler Stone Cold was interviewed prior to a match against a rival...

'Your talk about your Psalms, you talk about John 3.16, well Austin 3.16 just whooped your ***!'.

But serious, no one takes a lot of notice about the old testament... but its the best resource apart from roman and eyptian records to define the early history of Judah... and the story of King Soloman and all that. Its more sense than the new testament casue how many times has it been modified? Its like Chinese Whispers where a statement is passed around a hundred people and when it gets to the last person, the story is different. But why should base laws according to some 'holy' book?

Just sums how stupid us humans really are... we are incapable of making laws.
Besides I don't think Jesus would like the fact that a religion is based soley on his teachings... he actully was nothing more than a Jew, a kindhearted fellow and a carpenter. Either way he was probably a sound bloke, but also foresaw stuff like when he knew when Peter denounced him three times.

Oh and he was born 2008 years ago tomorrow apparently...
How ironic we are having a religious disucussion... and he's part of it.
Would be intresting to hear his opinion if he did happen to exist somewhere up there...

The Dead Sea Scrolls indicate that the Old Testament has remained intact since at least 150 BC, and sufficient knowledge of classical Hebrew has persisted to avoid semantic drift.

But more importantly, the notion that an oral tradition is incapable of accuracy is fallacious. Oral traditions are maintainable through rote repetition: people are told the same thing repeatedly throughout their entire lives, until they can reproduce the entire message (including the phrasing) accurately. In cultures with a strong oral tradition it's not uncommon to see harsh penalties for an inaccurate rendition. Looking at this like the telephone game is no more than infantile.

A part of the Torah is an oral tradition that was maintained in parallel to the Pentateuch. There are no meaningful inconsistencies that I'm aware of.

the rest
I got halfway through writing an argument that modern law isn't based on religion and pointing out that I've spent a lot of time in this thread arguing that the Bible isn't the real reason for proposition 8 but then I realized that the only people on this forum who are ever going to understand my point would have already gotten it and the rest of you can go to hell

That was misphrases I had referred to the New Testament in comparison to the Old Testament. The truth of the Old Testament is as you put it. I was commenting on how the Old Testament is more true than the new testament... I've found that the Old Testament contains records of things that did happen in some way as in the case of King Soloman's temple... and basically it shares a lot with Judaism... but i've never seen a bible with the Old Testament as part of it. The hebrew language version is reputed to contain prophecies for the future, was that ever true?

Im quite intrested in that text... as it contains some intresting bits and peices about the early history of Judah. I've got little doubt of the Old Testament... but im not so on the New Testament, I might be just cynical. But yeah... i've got no problem with religion, im open minded... okay I disagree with a moral point, but religion would not be as its with beliefs would it.

I have not got no issue with those who believe... besides some of us have something to believe in. But yeah Im glad we have these kind of discussions. All kudos for sticking to your point of view, however.

Carry on.
