Insanity Ward! Announcement and Discussion Forum Rule Changes! (UPDATED 12/24)

And I will say this: if I was the absolute ruler of Massassi and could do what I want, I would actually keep the Insanity Ward and have only SF_Gold occupy it.

Would that be a better solution? :v:

It had nothing to do with flexing muscles, and you know it. If he had sent that PM to another one of my staff members instead of me, I would have still banned him. You're using the "flexing muscles" as an excuse.

Imagine if you were a teacher in school and some kid comes up to you after class, after threatening him with detention for misbehavior. And he just says straight to your face, "**** you". What would you, as a teacher, do? Wave at him and tell him to have a nice day? Pretend it never happened? Absolutely not.

I may regret some things I have done, but that situation is not one of them.

You would have made an awesome politician - deflect, dodge, redirect. You're skilled at avoiding giving direct answers and diverting blame to others.

On a side note, if a student does tell a teacher to "**** off" or whatnot, the teacher can't do a damned thing about it (at least in California). I know this first hand, having been very troublesome in my youth.

Also, as reluctant as I am to agree with Hombre, I think he makes a valid point (though in a severely stupid way) about a certain ban. It always seemed best to me that public issues be dealt with publicly, and private issues be dealt with privately. It seemed you were content with simply deleting the thread and moving on (because that action was not ban-worthy), until certain words were exchanged in private, which doesn't quite make sense to me. I don't know what all took place or was said, however, so I won't make any further judgments until you elaborate.

[On another matter, I also feel that splitting up an already dying forum is unwise. Mort-Hog makes a good argument against it. I won't bother to repeat it, because I pretty much agree with everything he said.]

Chalk up another vote for "this is a bad idea". For reasons already stated many times here. It took about 2 seconds for me to stop caring what was happening there, the effect being that you just killed half the forum for me.

I will put in my 2 cents on what I think of the new board -- good or bad idea, it is not likely to bring much success in what you hope for it to do. I'd point to the ISB as an example, as much as I'd like to think otherwise. I don't have any strong opinions about the new board one way or the other, though, and I'll see its test run out.

On another note, a lot of you HAVE BEEN overly-harassing CM. Chill already.

Although I have opinions on most of the issues being discussed in this thread, they don't influence my enjoyment of the forums (read: a place to browser and occasionally post when I'm bored) enough to make me want to address them (i.e. the cost of effort not worth the benefit).

Just to briefly cast my "vote" on the issues in the interest of furthering an accurate representation of the community's opinions, however, here are my takes:

Steven ban - I don't think he should have been banned mostly because I think PMs fall under a different ruleset than the public forums when it comes to post content.

Insanity Ward - don't really care, it's just one extra click for me. I don't really see a point in it, though, as the only difference is that your postcounts in there don't count. Organizationwise... there's no tangible difference other than that one extra click. It doesn't really help nor detract. I think the creation of the forum was unnecessary and the blackash is an overreaction.

"Overmoderation" / rules -- I do think the level of "seriousness" in moderation is slightly disproportionate to the amount actually necessary. But, it hasn't really affected me, so again, I'm mostly indifferent.

Or, you could let the people of Massassi decide what is "contentless" by letting them on post on crap threads. :\

See, if you allow crap like that to go on, for people to back talk you on an administrative decision, they will think that they can just get away with whatever they want. I've seen it happen time and time again, not just here, but other places too.

This has nothing to do with age, but instead a sense of maturity. If he can't accept the fact that he was in the wrong, and finds the need to attack me for doing so, then he needs to be banned. It's a sociological truth.

Could I have ignored it and let him be? Absolutely. But that would have only led to more problems down the line. You don't resolve situations by ignoring people. Certainly not as staff.

We don't take this place that seriously. Neither should you.

The issue was dealt with in the only proper way possible. There isn't any "private" way of dealing with such things. You can't "privately" ban someone, as that causes people to start asking questions. You can't blow it off because that gives people incentive to continue. You can't get in an argument as, let's face it, that's asking for trouble. And not even remotely private.

All in all it was a stupid situation that shouldn't have ever existed in the first place. But he created that conflict. He made it clear publically (in IRC) and privately. I don't typically bring IRC matters into the forums, so I didn't immediately ban him here for that. However it didn't help matters much when he simply PMed me immediately after I kicked him out of IRC. It's an obvious declaration that he had no intention of keeping his opinions to himself.

I have every reason to take Massassi seriously, regardless of whether others do or not. I have a duty to keep this community alive as best I can, as well as the services contained within.

I'd agree with that Matty... I think that deserves kudos :)
You do your best for us my friend.

Anyways its a good idea, and the disabling of the post count is quite a good idea, on another forum I belong to, the post count there is not disabled, and you post count becomes inflated, but peeps post on there not just because to inflate post count, but to have fun and enjoy the forum.

But I posted three or four times, but if its not going to contribute to post count, so at least it can be fun and we can spam without it adding to any post count. Actully im not that fussed about that, because cause im not really bothered about post count, im more concerned with enjoying a decent community and we all learn about ourselves.

I approve of the idea :)
It will make Massassi even a more worthwile forum to visit.

So my thoughts on the matter are pretty simple. I don't see this as necessary. Massassi has never been able to support a "Forum o' Rubbish" as it were in the ZHoH days. We have a number of other garbage forums that aren't fun anymore because they aren't secret anymore, and there's not enough people to make them a secret.

Beyond that, we aren't allowed to be elitist anymore about anything, which killed off the -ites and made this place boring way back when. Diluting it further will only make it slip further into a state of decay.

more drama = interesting threads on forums.

It has not put me off from posting, I think its actully fun... looking at the word association thread, its got a lot of hits so (even despite post count is disabled) it could work. Come on guys and gals its a good concept...
Personally I like it and I could work, its made me want visit more often and just have a laugh and chat :)
2008-12-26, 2:15 PM #112
That is, if you are the only one posting in there.

Why not change the Insanity Ward into something simpler? Instead of a whole forum, why not just make it ONE thread? Something similar to a "shoutbox" where people can just leave thoughts/post on some matter on a whim?

That way it doesn't have to be a whole pointless area of the forums? And it doesn't have to drag anything down because it's just ONE thread going on and on?

You use too many ellipsis', Eddbanger. It's pointless and obnoxious. I think if you put some of those wasted keystrokes back into making your posts coherent and grammatically correct you might have a chance at posting something worth a damn.
