AM and PM.. they just don't make sense.
2004-08-14, 5:55 AM #1
I always use military time because AM and PM confuse me. I could never remember if 12:00 am was midday or midnight.

Logically am and pm are incorrect. 12am comes 11 hours before 11am and one hour before 1am. So it goes 11pm - 12am. Logically you'd expect 12pm to come after 11pm.

Also, AM stands for "ante meridiem" which is latin for before midday and PM stands for "post meridiem" which means after midday. 12:00 in the morning is midday so isn't either AM or PM according to the defintion. 12:00 at night is exactly 12 hours before midday and exactly 12 hours after it meaning that it's also not AM or PM.

I just thought i'd share my confusion.

You're wrong. Think about it. Midday is between 11:59 and 12:00. Therefore 12:00 is AFTER MIDDAY, as is 12:01. Which means they are PM.

What? there are 24 hours in a day. So half that is 12... midday is 12:00 exactly.

when your watch says 12:00, it's because twelve hours have passed thus, it's afternoon.

As for 12:00am, it should really be 00:00am

If that were true then everyones watch would be wong and would end up 3 1/2 minites wrong in just one week. That does not happen.

Actually, he's fairly correct. Days are not actually 24 hours long. Thus, every four years, February has an extra day to account for this lost time.

I thought the leap year was because it takes 365 and a quarter days for the earth to go around the sun.

If we were losing 30 seconds a day, after 2 years our clocks would be over 6 hours ahead of the actual time. As we got around to the leap year we'd be 12 hours ahead. By adding an extra day we would still be 12 hours ahead.

There is no such thing as an accurate watch or clock anyway. I'm pretty sure everyone here has noticed they occasionally must adjust the time on their watches or just deal with the inaccuracy. The earth takes precisely 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.2 seconds to make one rotation around itself. Google it.

What I'm worried about is shouldn't there be some other time we have to add an extra day into some month or somthing. Surely leap year isn't THAT accurate. Isn't there some sort of dealibob where you have to do something special eevery millenium or something like that?

Alright, at work (army reserves, sig ops, just call me a pack rat :P..) We go on zulu time, meaning the 24:00 timing. So im use to it but you know.. I am use to AM PM, I mean.. No difference.. If your working midnights, and the work computer has a time that says 23:45.. Its 11:45.. I mean, doing midnights suck.. Wanna know why?

You think its tomorrow when in fact its today.. So if midnights get to you, heres a fact.. Zulu hours can do it to ya because you expect it to be a additional time rather then being use to AM/PM.. Im getting over it, but yeah.. and I aint american btw.. I got my took, on my R-O-O-F sipping a canadian beer! God knows I have... 56 cases of a 24 shrine.. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif].. Anyone wanna join me chug a few down? lol..

You do know that there is a difference between Zulu time and the 24 hour clock, right? Not trying to be a jerk but I can't tell from your post if you actually use zulu time or are confused.

I'm pretty certain that if this is even the case at all, it's because of the slight differences in the construction of the individual watches. I don't believe that the effects of time dilation can be seen after just a couple weeks of driving around in your car.

I made a happy picture to explain.
On Earth 1, the red dot is where midnight is. The time it takes the Earth to make one complete rotation is 23 hours, 56 minutes, ~4 seconds (this is a sidereal day). But, the Earth moves to position 2 during the day, so where midnight was the night before, is no longer midnight, as the green dot is the new midnight. It takes a few minutes to rotate to the new midnight (which makes 24 hours, a solar day). As it moves to position 3, it takes 23 hours, 56 minutes, ~4 seconds to reach the green dot again, but the new midnight is still a few minutes away.
