Steam

So I'm really not a gamer and the last PC game I bought was like, JO (mainly due to Massassi). And most of the time I'm too busy to get my money's worth out of any game I do buy.

But I see all this hubbub about L4D and TF2 and how they're so cheap, and Steam looks pretty cool. But I don't know anything about it and I remember hearing complaints about it before.

So, (since I remember a number of Massassians have Steam),

  • How is Steam? Is it annoying to have on your computer? Is it pissy about DRM / how/when you can play your games? Is it convenient / awesome / fun?
  • I did a quick search on the Steam site and realized despite having been a part of HL2C, I've never played any Half-Life game. Would you say Orange Box + L4D (this weekend) = $55 is worth it considering I'm probably not gonna be playing very often?

HL2 is awesome, get it.

Steams no big deal. I set it to not start with windows, since I don't play games too often. To play any of the games I just open steam, click the game, and off it goes. I have 24/7 internet, so I've never messed with offline play.

Steam will suck if you're a whiny linux lover. >_>

It's pretty nice, if you have an account you can download the game anywhere you want to play. which could be useful I suppose.

IMO, Steam is the greatest thing to happen to PC gaming since broadband.

I love having all my games linked to my account, that I can use on any PC anywhere.

I can see why others might not agree, for instance if I had dialup or no internet access then steam might seem like a waste of resources. That said my niece has a very tempermental internet connection, and I have never seen any issues with Steam Offline mode. Some people prefer physical media as well.

Yes, these are some of the best PC games in recent years. As for not alot of time, the single player ones shouldnt matter since you can always play for a bit and then save. Most of TF2's levels are also very quick, it would be easy to play for 30 min and step away. If your doing Coop Expert Campaigns in L4D that can be very time consuming. You can always play thru on an easier setting.

Steam use to be annoying, and it was indeed back years ago. Connection issues and validation problems, not to mention people were suspicious and unsure of it because it was a new thing. But it's definitely much better now. Compared to whatever the **** SecureROM and other stupid intrusive DRM crap PG games use these days, logging into Steam for validation purposes is quite the "lesser of two evils."

Also, Steam is really nice about dealing with games that were in retail. Regardless of whether the game was on Steam when it was released or not, if the game is on Steam now, you can put your retail CD-Key in and steam will recognize you own the game and give you the same access all the others have.
2009-02-14, 7:02 AM #8
Which is good, especially when your retail install doesn't work like it's supposed to, so I can redownload the game through Steam to make it work.

Plus we have the steam community would about 50 of us linked to it, so If you have the same games as others you can always jump into their game and shoot MZZT in the face!

this only works for certain games... for example Stalker retail keys will not work on steam (last i checked) and before Jan 29th UT3 retail keys wouldn't work on steam but now they do

Steam is basically all these words, and if you enjoy online shooters it's pretty hard to beat TF2/L4D.

The best part about Steam is having used it a very long time ago, deleted it a long time ago, and downloading it because you had the urge to Half-Life again and realize you have a bunch of games you forgot about.

I did that with the HalfLife package I had..now I can get HL, OpForce, CS, BS all on Steam. It worked great.

I don't remember my account name though.

My Steam account is Cloud_Lonesky I believe. Steam isn't that bad in my opinion. It's pretty easy to set up an account and retrieve your games.

My Steam account is Darkjedibob, surprise. I don't have a lot of the MP games that most people play though, not a fan of twitch shooters.

It's blah. The client seems slow to start up (I do have an old computer, p4 3.2ghz). The offline mode is really flaky.
2009-02-15, 9:52 PM #26
It's not that slow to start up, just a few seconds. You're supposed to keep it running.

I never really minded Steam, and it seems fantastic compared to clunky, limited-downloads bull**** like EA Link.

Offline mode seems to have about a 33% chance of working on any given day, though. Mostly it tells me offline mode "cannot be completed in offline mode"

Steam is great when everything works groovy, but tech support is microsoft quality at best. Usually if you have any sort of issue, you're left hunting forums (most of the time not even steam forums) for answers.

I would say it's still worth it though. Great way to keep annoying CD DRM and BS off your machine, and never having to worry about a disc getting lost or broken.

Pommy, do you have HL2 yet? I have extra copies of HL2 and Episode 1 if you want them.

I also have an extra Episode 1 I'd be willing to donate to someone who doesnt have it.

The main problems I've had come from installing/updating a game and then not restarting Steam. Otherwise it seems to work really well.

I do not have HL2. That's very generous of you >_< I was planning on getting the Orange Box (eventually), though, so your copies might do more for someone who isn't looking for the other games in Orange Box (TF2, Portal, Episode 2?) I dunno. I really appreciate the offer though.

Edit: that someone would appear to be Spectrael :)

Do people not realize Steam is loaded with DRM up the *** at every step of the process?

I'd rather load through Steam than StarForce or an overzealous SecuROM setup.

So? What does it hurt?

And Pommy if you want HL2 you can have it since you were actually asked first.

But the exact reason why I don't have it is because I have TF2 and Portal already :D So kinda hesitant on buying the Orange Box

well, whenever you guys figure out who's gonna take it, let me know. Spec, I already sent a friend request to ya on steam.
