The first thing I thought of was that story on CNN about this chimp that went nuts and started attacking its handler's friend and its handler and after being beaten back and shot a bunch of times by police escaped to its home at which it died of blood loss and its shot wounds.

Even knowing about that incident, it wasn't the first thing I thought of. My reaction might have been colored by the poll choices, but I immediately thought of Obama.

How is it racist? There is no mention of the nationality, the race, the creed, the agenda of the shot monkey. If anything it alludes to Congress, because Congress wrote the bill

Honestly, the comic is just stupid. It just took two random recent events and combined them. How current and topical!

I mean, I guess it's saying that the stimulus bill was poorly written, so it must have been written by this chimp? It's a bit of a stretch. It's like comparing the stimulus bill to the woman who just gave birth to octuplets... "LOL the bill reads like it was written by a baby LOL!"

Yeah, that's exactly the joke. The police accidentally killed the White House's stimulus bill-writing chimp. It's not a very good joke, but it's not completely nonsensical either. The execution is what really makes it awful.

I really doubt the cartoonist intended any kind of racist message. He's just an idiot.

if the cartoon had actually been about obama it would have been incredibly racist. i actually thought it was about obama when i first heard about it. i was listening to the radio and the host said the caption read "they'll have to find someone else to sign the next stimulus bill."

but if you actually look at the comic it is a really unfunny attempt at saying that congress is full of apes who really just fling poo at each other and write ****y bills.

The point everyone seems to have overlooked so far, is that the bill wasn't written by just one monkey. In fact, congress employs a rather revolutionary JBOC [Just a Bunch of Chimps] system to maintain high performance and redundancy in case of exactly this sort of monkey-loss. So honestly shooting one single member of it is going to cause some slowdown until the chimp is replaced, and a bit of banana-thrashing while the MonKluster is being rebuilt, but it'll be back to new in a jiffy. Now if the police had shot three monkeys at the same time, /then/ congress'd be up banana-creek without a hotspare..
