I don't think the peek works in the beta yet ... it's gonna be added to the RC.

I'm giving using the beta another shot and being a good tester and sending in bug reports haha

Does anyone know if there are alps touchpad drivers for scrolling and such? I'm missing them :(

Err, sorry, how does the peek differ from Alt+Tab on vista?
nope.
2009-02-26, 4:12 PM #7
When you hover over a task w/ alt-tab all the windows on the desktop other than the one you're hovering over become transparent.

Btw I don't like this change

32. Reduced confusion with drag/drop
The Release Candidate will remove the ability to drag/drop a folder into the Libraries node in the Explorer navigation pane. We know some liked this functionality to create a new library, but it also presented some serious design issues. For example, some were surprised to find a new library was created when their intent was to simply copy the folder. More seriously though, there were circumstances where people then deleted the original folder thinking it was already copied. Data loss is a grave concern of ours and we don’t want customers to suffer from such a mistake. Don’t worry though—one can still easily create a new library using the “New Library” or “Include in Library” commands in the Explorer command bar.

The drag and drop to add Libraries is really useful and I'd much rather have that than having to browse through a stupid file/folder selector or something to find the one I want. They should just make it apparent that you're adding a Library, not copying.

That sounds annoying.

Nvm I got the Alps touchpad working with Vista drivers

Man I've been submitting feedback like crazy today.

I just sent this one -- anyone else notice it?

Quote:
I noticed that when playing a youtube video, if somebody (for example) IMs me and I have IM sounds on, the sound will "focus" to the IM beep and the volume on the youtube video will decrease noticeably for a short while.

I think the 'focus' idea is a good idea but perhaps allow users some way to customize which program/window has 'priority'? I would imagine having a movie playing and having the volume constantly go down because of other sounds might be annoying.

Pommy Windows has a setting to control that under the Sound control panel somewhere, it's got a slider and everything. It's set to 80% reduction by default. It's been like this since Vista.

Feedback fail. >_>

Here's my list of problems with 7:
  • Occasional BSoDs from win32k.sys (windows system driver, usually once a day)
  • One of my external drives does not always turn off when the system suspends
  • The system does not always resume from suspend (hangs with no disk or monitor activity when powered up)
  • Faster than Vista, still way slower than XP on a single core system.
  • It is no longer possible to merge folders with the GUI. Windows will rename files or folders with the same name. It will only overwrite files on a drag operation when you drag a single file. xcopy /e from a command line is the only way left to merge without third-party tools (robocopy probably will too with the right switches).
  • Changing permissions en-mass on files causes a slew of "Access Denied" errors, one for EVERY FILE, when it is not possible to apply the permissions to the files. It is not possible to skip them all without canceling the entire operation.
  • When XP registry hives are mounted in 7, some permissions will no longer function on XP and will have to be fixed by hand.
  • The Troubleshooter will rarely be able to fix any problems.
  • Changing your public/work/home status on a secondary network interface (in my case, a TAP driver) does not work. It is thus impossible to use HomeGroup on such devices.
  • Sharing files to pre-7 machines is difficult and disabled by default (in favor of HomeGroup).
  • Sharing files with guest users on other machines is disabled through Group Policy by default in two places, making it all but impossible for Joe Average to figure out (Guest is in the list of banned users from remote access, and also in the list of restricted users from remote access, with the restricted shares list being empty).
  • Daemon Tools, according to reports, does not function (the SPTD driver does not install, Windows 7 also blocks the Daemon Tools installer).
  • UAC isn't a security boundary but annoys users just like one, all for the purpose of getting devs to make limited access programs so users can eventually run with limited access. What would happen if the beta shipped as RTM, is that some dev somewhere would make programs that disabled UAC at install time through the UAC control panel or rundll32 auto-elevation. If you've read TheDailyWTF you know someone would do this eventually.
  • It is more difficult to track down all the Accessibility shortcut options to disable them than it was in XP.
  • It is no longer possible to undock toolbars from the taskbar, either as free-floating or docked to other sides of the screen.
  • It is possible to pin items to the Start Menu that cannot be unpinned (Computer, Network) without deleting the registry entries for ALL the pinned items (it's in binary and impossible to read) and repining them all.
  • Windows Setup STILL kills grub.

Here are the things I'm excited about:

  • Consoles have themed scrollbars now! ^_^
  • Superbar!
  • Jump lists!
  • The action center is sorta neat, the reliability center is great. The graph keeps dipping down though. :(
  • I liek ribbons.
  • My game framerates are only about 1/2 what they are in XP, instead of being 1/3 like they were in Vista.

I think this new Windows is better than anything previous.
My only complaint is the (Whatever you call the bar on the bottom with the start button)

The quick launch list is the same as active windows, which I'm still not used to yet.
Icons only -- no text .. lame
I'm not sure about the start menu yet ..
2009-02-26, 7:27 PM #15
Squirrel: You can get it to look like the old one. Go to Taskbar properties, set it to small icons, enable text. You can also unpin the default entries.

I like the Start Menu changes (more focus on cataloging recent file activity per-program, this functionality is in the jump lists on the taskbar too). I don't like using text instead of icons for the shut down stuff.

[Edit: Oh yeah my screenshot program doesn't work properly under 7. Minute differences in the .NET framework per platform, BLEH.]

[Edit: And file and folder sharing is dependent on a LOT of the new services thanks to HomeGroup, disabling any of those breaks it. So you have to leave a lot of them running, which means less free resources for other tasks, and a more difficult task for users who want to slim down their OS.]

What the hell it doesn't do this on my Vista box ever

Edit: okay I looked it up (Win 7) -- screenshot attached.

It's supposed to be reduction for when you're in a Skype call or something. It's not supposed to happen when you're playing music or movies and something else starts making sound. And I swear it's like NEVER happened on my Vista box.

I don't see a "Text" option in properties.
I kind of wish the start menu had a bigger area when opened ( Maybe you can change this .. ) I do like how it has the more frequently used things first. It has some office 07 elements that I'm still not used to, as well.

Overall, I think this is much better than previous windows. I just have not gotten used to some (To me) major differences.

Squirrel: set labels to "Never Combine" in properties.

Why the hell wouldn't it? It's not Microsoft's responsibility to support neckbeard bootloaders.

I am more than happy to support my own neckbeard bootloader without MS deleting it for me.

I haven't done this in years and I've completely forgotten how....

Windows 7 has a partition manager built into the setup.
And boy is it a great operating system, the one feature that really stuck out for me was the ability to update video card driver automaticly without restarting.

Yes that's right, Win7 updates video card drivers by itself in the background. It also doesn't need to restart the computer, just reinitialize the drivers themselves.

Another feature i find particularly usefull is the fact that almost every program can save shortcuts. For example; Winamp saves a list of recently opened songs and Explorer saves a list of recently opened folders. It is a massive time saver.

Windows7 also boots faster, looks better, and is more secure then Vista or XP.

Given time the new taskbar really grows on you.
I thought it was terrible the first couple days too, but the way it cuts down on clutter really is nice.
    2009-02-27, 1:11 AM #28
Cuts down on clutter by adding visual clutter, seriously why are so many single pixel lines needed everywhere? Say what you like about the colours of XP, at least the graphical clutter in the interface was kept reasonable.

I don't see any 1px lines, maybe it's an option. I keep my taskbar on auto-hide so i don't even see it that much.
    2009-02-27, 7:07 AM #30
I don't get it. How is this ugly? I think it looks 10x better than XP, and 1000x better than Vista.

I just discovered you can quickly throw windows to the side and it auto sizes them to fit half the screen... pretty neat.
    2009-02-27, 10:29 AM #32
You can also drag windows to the top to maximize, or pull the edges to the top to snap the window vertically.

I wish I knew how to create a dual-boot with Windows 7 beta. I'd love to check it out, but I dont have much time to devote to it.

I just installed it normally on a different partition then Vista and it worked fine. I'm actually running a triboot of XP, Vista x64, and Win7, right now.
    2009-02-27, 12:04 PM #36
My home box is dual booting XP/Win 7, but I have been running Win 7 on my laptop full time.

I like the small Icons on the task bar, but I don't like the grouping, I hate that I have to click on the "group" then select the window I want.
    "Nulla tenaci invia est via"
    2009-02-27, 12:08 PM #37
Thats changable, Right click on the task bar and click "Properties"
Change the "Taskbar Buttons" for whatever you want. Never combine looks and works almost exactly like older systems, Combine when taskbar is full combines icons into groups as soon as the taskbar is full, and always combine is the default setting where they are always sorted into groups.
    2009-02-27, 12:10 PM #38
I've done that. But like I said I like the small icons and that mode gets rid of them

Check the "Use Small Icons" box?

Hm, don't remember that box but I'll have to look at it later
