Victoria

Modelo

Corona IS piss in a bottle. It tastes like crap, and I've never been able to get drunk on it.

On the other hand Modelo and Victoria... now thats beer!

I rather like it. From my trips to Mexico, I've only had the opportunity to try Corona, Pacifico, Sol, and Dos Equis. Corona was my favorite, and I thought Pacifico tasted like charcoal after the first couple of sips.

Also, Corona is one of the best selling beers worldwide, and the most imported. It can't suck that bad.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

You say that but I've heard the most popular beer in america is Bud Light.

And the light beer outsells the regular Bud pisswater.
nope.

My dad's favorite beer is Pabst's Blue Ribbon and my mom's favorite is Bud Light. My own favorite is Busch Light. The cheaper the better!

Corona isn't so much a beer as a symbol, really. They've had a fantastic ad campaign for years and basically made themselves synonymous with the beach, the summer, and taking it easy. I'm sure some people genuinely like Corona, but a lot of people don't buy it because it's great or even good. They buy it because for years it's been associated with positive feelings and experiences. It also helps that it's designed to be palatable to as many people as possible.

Guinness is another beer that's overwhelmingly popular worldwide, and a much better product than Corona. But the common factor for popular beers isn't quality, it's marketing. Guinness also has a great ad campaign, and in some parts of the world it also benefits from myths about the health benefits it confers on its drinkers.

On the topic of Sam Adams, they do make some good beers and I don't really get the scorn some people have for them. Admittedly, for almost every beer I've had from them, I've had a better one in the same style from someone else. (Imperial Pilsner is the exception.) But if I'm in a place with a limited selection, I'd drink Boston Lager or Summer Ale without any complaints.

tl;dr: Popular beers are popular because of advertising. Sam Adams makes decent beers.

I would have to agree with Michael. The commercials and publicity for it is always the same and has been reinforced by years of the same positive message. Although, I know very few people who buy Corona.

Then again Corona is a light beer. My friends and me prefer dark beer, such as Victoria, or Indio.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Yuengling is an average lager.

Sam Adams makes quite a few decent beers, but when people start saying "Sam Adams or GTFO," they look like complete tools.

Stone, Ommegang, Great Lakes, Dogfish Head, these are real American breweries.

I think the best beer I've ever had is Trappistes Rochefort 8. But at around $10 each, they aren't cheap. Or maybe Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Dunkel, on tap with a slice of orange. :awesome:

I bought a bottle of Rochefort 6 (not 8, though the store also had that) once. When I got back to my apartment and was getting it out of the trunk, it fell out of its bag and shattered all over the street. I haven't been able to find it again since. :gonk:

I hate you so much for reminding me of this.

Regarding fruit in beer: I understand what an orange or lemon slice adds to certain beers, but I also understand what it takes away. Citrus flavors are simple and strong, and while they complement certain kinds of beers nicely, they tend to wash out the complex flavors of a good wit or hefeweizen. Even when I get something as ordinary as Blue Moon, I prefer to skip the orange slice. It's not about being manly, it's just that I think these beers taste better without additions.

(P.S.: If you're drinking Corona, for God's sake put a lime in it. I can't imagine making it through the bottle otherwise.)

(P.P.S.: My top American breweries would have to be Avery, Great Divide, Three Floyds, Lagunitas and Sierra Nevada.)

Well, as of tonight I have a new favorite German beer. Schneider Aventinus is possibly the smoothest-drinking beer I've ever had in any category, despite its 8% ABV, and it's damn tasty in addition.
