What do you think of this plot to legalize marijuana?

Though I'm not cali-massassian, I have no issue with legalizing marijuana anywhere, so long as its limited in where you can smoke. Cigarette smoke is difficult enough to endure as a non-smoker, marijuana not only smells twice as bad, it sticks to clothes faster. When I go to a friend's place and what not if they smoke cigs/pot its their choice and I'll expect to smell it. I don't care.

However, I don't want to start inhaling second-hand pot everywhere I go, and especially not have it enter my own place. (It happens sometimes in the summer when neighbours do it on their balconies, it comes into my home and smells like **** for hours. It drives me furious. When someone smokes a cigarette in only smells for a few seconds, but the other just sticks and smells way too long.) I'll be honest, I don't get why people do that kind of stuff, just like getting drunk all the time. Can't you enjoy yourself and life without the need of some stimulant? BUT that's another story. :P

*shrug*

Doesn't bother me as long as the non-smokers are protected, as Jep says.

Anyway, even if marijuana was legalized in CA, I'm sure the Navy would not allow it's sailors to smoke pot, so even if I wanted to, I still wouldn't be able to. (For example, even when we're in port in countries where marijuana is legal, we still are not allowed to partake.) We pop on a drug test (which are done at random and often with direct observation), and we're out. No second chances.

I do think it would probably be good for the economy, at least in the short term, because it would create a new market that the government could tax, and would eliminate a lot of cost associated with combating drug trafficing.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

as has already been mentioned, as long as there are regulations i am all for it. i say regulate and tax it, and there you go... millions more in revenue for the state... now they can stop putting "fees" on our income tax! :argh:

Wouldn't effect me.
I'll smoke it either way.

It would still be against federal laws, and therefore would not be "legal".

That said, I'd rather not pay $25 +tax for an eighth.

well the federal government has an incredibly broad range of authority on any commerce (selling of marijuana) however you might be able to make a case for legalizing possession of it, as long as you dont "buy" or "sell" it. simple ownership might fall squarely under the jurisdiction of state law and NOT federal, however even then you would have one hell of a legal battle on your hands.

The state's economy is in the ****ter. Legalizing and taxing pot would definitely bring some revenue to the state.

To those worred about even more DUIs on roads n' ****, I drive far more dangerously than any one caked. I don't think stoners go 95 MPH on the freeway weaving between cars.

a guy growing a plant or two under a skylight in his house is probably peaceful, however the guys who have upward of a million dollars invested in plants and growing equipment... not so much :psylon:

About marijuana "stinking" stuff up more: When I put it away, no one can tell when they come into my room. I have been around people who'd recognize the smell and get me removed from the premises but haven't. I think the problem with smokers, both cigarettes and marijuana, is that some are unhygienic to begin with, and may not wash their clothes or may smoke inside near their clothing. It also comes right down to how you smoke something: If you hold the cherry near you or any cloth, it'll smell like your smoke. The rule is mouth to tray with no time in between, that way your fingers don't stink either. In fact, all of my hats smell like smoke, but none of my clothes do. I need to start tipping them back or taking them off when I smoke cigars.

yeah, I know plenty of people that smoke marijuana in the house, and cigarettes outside, besides the obvious reason. Marijuana smoke doesn't hang around as long as cigarettes

Honestly, I'm surprised you're just realizing this. We've been talking about it for the last month or so. :p

and while we're on the subject, we're probably having a party next weekend. I was gonna ask you if you wanted to come (and bring some alcohol :D).

I disagree. Like I said before, in the summer, I'll have dumbass neighbours smoke pot and cigarettes on their balconies near mind. Cigarette smoke gets in, I get a wiff and the smell is gone soon enough. Their marijuana stinks up my apartment for hours.

But, it is worthless to argue, because smokers, pot or otherwise, almost always just defend themselves and try to downplay just how bad the **** smells and how untolerable it can be for a non-smoker.

Or maybe non-smokers love to *****? Oh yeah, I'm on ignore because I type in paragraphs. Come over to my house and we'll see how "downplayed" I'm making it. Hell, I even admitted: MOST smokers are nasty and inconsiderate about smoke, but if you take some care, you can smell perfectly normal. In-fact, I'd argue the most visible smokers are the ones that give the rest a bad name. Lots of old and more mature people smoke without anyone noticing because they don't brag about it like us young whippersnappers and medical advocates.

Short Version for Jep: Your neighbor is a dick, I am not. Don't make me out to be the same as the *******s you've encountered.

My short version:

I don't care if you smoke, I just hate hearing about it every day. The bragging annoys the hell out of me.

It does smell like crap. If you're not an idiot and clean up, then sure the smell goes away and who cares.

I'm not grouping you with all of the smokers I've met, but for the most part the ones that I've had to deal with were complete *******s. And no, not the basic college stoner hippy :P
