I think it's funny how gun threads always lead to zombie threads.

Being a quarter mile away assumes that you know exactly where all the enemies are and they won't be able to get close in anyway.

Seems to me that if you're a quarter mile away, there's no reason to waste your ammunition in the first place. Fighting zombies is inherently a close-quarters affair. If you're far enough away to need a long-range weapon, you're far enough away to avoid them altogether.
