Star Trek (2009)

Bloody excellent.

Given the significance of a certain planet in the series and previous films, my jaw dropped when I saw what happened to it.

Casting was excellent. Spock was perfect. Scotty was hilarious.

I only have a couple questions:

1) Would you consider yourself a Star Trek fan/geek? (as in have you seen a significant number of the series/movies prior and enjoyed them?)

2) If yes to the above, does this movie feel "Star Trek" to you? I'm mostly concerned that it opted for dark and gritty action over the optimistic future and social commentary aspects.

1) Yes, seen everything
2) Yes and No. The film is dark (you don't get much darker than what happens in it), but it's also very lighthearted. It's very much in the spirit of TOS and the earlier films character-wise. I'd call it a cross between TOS, Wrath of Kahn and First Contact. It doesn't get into the politics of things (at all), but it does convey a sense of general optimism.

It works both well for newcomers and fans (the people I were with had never seen Star Trek and loved it), and also as a standalone film or the beginning of a new series of films.

Hmm, I see. In any case, I'm sure the movie will be enjoyable when I see it. Thanks!

I never cared for Star Trek, but the movie has me intrigued.

Indeed. I've never liked Star Trek, but this looks fantastic.

I'm definitely going to have to go see it.

I cant wait for this movie. I have one question though:

I recall reading a few weeks ago that the TNG crew might show up in it.. Specifically Data and Picard. Now I know that this is an absolute impossibility for the two to show in the film, but there was something to do with a web comic featuring these two characters that ties somehow into the film. Does it get mention in the movie at all? Or is the web comic something just totally unrelated?...(might not have been a webcomic either but some sort of comic)

No mention of TNG, Voyager or DS9 in the movie at all. Only previous character is Old Spock

Anyone know the comic/rumor I was talking about then? I'm looking everywhere and can't seem to find anything but the rumor pages.

Thanks Genk, that's it. Although that's a ton of detail more than I heard before..

CAPTAIN DATA? Wtf? Can someone that's read this explain that to me.. I thought Data was dead after Nemesis, in the comic do they do something with B4 to bring Data back, or did the writers just ignore Nemesis's ending altogether?
2009-04-23, 3:25 PM #20
I'm sure they've said before that theres a bunch of ways that they could bring data back, but the cast are getting far too old to make the films anymore.
nope.

Yes, we need fat Riker and his skinny stunt-double to come back and do some more bad acting for us.

This movie will be great, if only to hear the howls of anguish from 30yo Trekkies. Not even out yet and their *****ing about almost non-existent product placement and how the franchise, a huge shining beacon of intelligent media  , is being sold out.

It can only get better...

:P I was just kidding. I've never seen any posters or billboards and magazine ads either, but the TV is littered with commercials for it, I don't know how you've missed them.

Regarding the score... Is the traditional "Star Trek" Theme in there? (TNG And the later original ST Movies, 4-6? maybe) Might be a silly question but hey, you never know the direction some directors / studios choose to go with the music. I remember a story when Fox wanted a rockish sounding score for Star Wars, rather than John Williams' classical sounding instrumental music.

It has the music from TOS, and only at the end

I'm actually excited for it, despite not being a big star trek fan.

I should try TNG again. I like all of the heady metaphor episodes, but the soap opera episodes are painful.

TNG is my favorite tv series of all-time. You really should try it again, get the DVD's, they're super cheap now.

Hmm, the complete DS9 set dropped about $60 in price on Amazon from what it was a few days ago when I checked. Tempting...

This is how every TNG fan feels; we just pretend the Troi episodes don't exist.
