I want a guitar game. HALP!
2009-04-24, 3:00 AM #1
Now then.

My old boss let me borrow Guitar Hero 2 from him. I found this to be great fun until the day I had to give it back (I changed jobs). I need advice from you d00ds and here's the lowdown (yo yo yo yo etc.)

1) I'm on 360
2) Izzy and I already have 2 wireless mics from Lips. I would like these to work with Guitar game which puts me in the Rock Band / World Tour area.
3) I like Queen, Izzy likes the Beatles. I understand there is a Beatles themed game coming out soon for one of the franchises but there (so far) only seems to be Queen stuff on Singstar for PS3 :( . I'd kinda like to include her, but I don't want just Beatles stuff.
4) I don't want to spend a complete fortune.

HALP!

Love and kisses,

Your friendly neighbourhood MANTRAIN.

The only Queen song i know for sure that's on any of the games in Killer Queen on the first Guitar Hero.
Pissed Off?

Yeah, that I do know. I never got to play it, although had I not switched jobs I was about to DLC it.

I think I read something about some queen songs being downloadable for Rock Band, but I may be mistaken.
nope.

Queen songs aren't the only thing though. They'd be nice to have.

Lips mics won't work. :( At least to my knowledge. If anyone knows differently, PLEASE prove me wrong.

Don't know about that.

Plan to. Probably $250 - $300 for the full gear (2 guitars, mic, and drums). But which game you get won't make much of a difference, I think.

If you're more beginner skill with guitars, go with rock band. it's somewhat easier (still quite fun). If you want more of a challenge, go with Guitar Hero.

[note: I haven't played Guitar Hero: World Tour, or Guitar Hero: Metallica, but I own Guitar Hero 2, and 3, and Rock Band 1 and 2, and Lips.]
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Lassev: I guess there was something captivating in savagery, because I liked it.

The guitar in guitar hero games is more fun, I wouldn't get anything without the full band set these days. Guitar Hero World Tour may be your best bet at the moment since there's a lot of announced games coming that can take advantage of the peripherals, there's a "greatest hits" game coming which contains the most popular songs from GH1,2,3 and 80s but redone for the full band kit and using original masters where possible.

Ooooo does this greatest hits game allow for Lips mics? This might be the best option...
2009-04-24, 7:06 AM #10
No idea, but if it works with World Tour it should work with any game in the series

Wicked. I can probably get a 2nd hand guitar fairly cheap down at Gamestation, mics are sorted, and I can get another guitar once I've taught my cack-handed friends to play. None of them were any good at GH2.

Ooooo but now I read that Rock Band games are backwards compatible...

Rock Band - Much larger library with DLC, better full band gameplay, songs from RB1 for 5 bucks, cleaner interface, much more polished, tougher songs overall as of RB2 and DLC

Frankly, I'd say get Rock Band 2. It has the edge pretty much in everything now. However, I would recommend picking up GH: Metallica or Gh: Smash Hits. Metallica is really a blast to play, even if you haven't heard much of them. It's got a few of my friends hooked.

Great link Buck, thanks.

So I reckon I get a bargain bucket GH to get a cheap GH Guitar which is compatible with everything, then drop the serious cash on the latest Rock Band...

I agree with basically all of this. No one can play songs like Painkiller, Panic Attack, etc. from RB2 on expert and then try to claim that RB games are easy. I got GHWT a few months ago, played it for a couple of days, and haven't touched it since.

1. they dont...i tried while you were out.
2. i only paid 160 for the entire set/game for rockband 1. and about 80 for each guitar hero game/controller, but world tour is about the same as rockband pack.

Lips for strictly karaoke purposes.
Rock Band 2 otherwise for all your guitarin & drummin

and yes, Rock Band and Guitar Hero have patches coming in the next several weeks (I think next month for GH, June for RB) that allow the use of the Lips mics (which are awesome).
2009-04-25, 3:09 AM #19
Rockcellent!

One last question - I got quite used to the hammer-on and hammer-off mechanic on Guitar Hero 2: is there something similar on Rock Band? Those are awesome. Particularly on Monkey Wrench.
2009-04-25, 4:40 AM #20
Yes, but I find them harder to see. Also the timing in Rock Band is less forgiving

Rock Band has been promoted appallingly in the UK, there was no hype leading up to its release and you can't even buy Rock Band 2 in shops, they're all selling Rock Band 1. The only places i've seen Rock Band 2 for sale is online (and yes it has actually been released in this country), whereas you can't move without tripping over Guitar Hero bundles in stores.

Rock Band 2 is out?

I don't know of anyone who actually owns Rockband or the supposedly available sequel. Hell I only know one person with Guitar Hero.
nope.

Detty has one, and I used to :(

Ah well, it's payday tomorrow!

I think I'll order Rock Band 2 and GH World Tour now I've discovered that the Rock Band drums work with it.

Woo! Step 1 complete!

Just in ASDA doing a bit of late night shopping for bread and stuff, and chanced a look at the games/dvds counter.

Guitar Hero III + Les Paul = £29

Now I just need to pick up Rock Band 2 and maybe another guitar in the process. Although somehow I doubt Izzy will understand my need for a bass player right now...

(If not, I can get guitars and drums later in a piecemeal fashion)
2009-04-30, 12:05 AM #31
I've never seen drums available separately, it's hard enough finding the guitars

You can get drums on game.co.uk - i was pricing them up yesterday :)

Also, does this mean you and I can play over Live Dettybuns? xxx
2009-04-30, 5:11 AM #34
Technically, except I can't play drums on my xbox and downloading profiles to the other one takes ages. so i'd be limited to the boring guitars.

Watch Craigslist. You can get a rockband 2 set for ~$150 or less. I'm getting tired of mine already, and it doesnt help that my xbox is probably dead.

Challenging for me though - I've only gone through GH2 on medium so far :)

I still struggle with these games on hard. I can do most of the songs, but the solo's on hard kill me sometimes. Too... much... hammering....*head explodes*

Wow. So I went into town today intending to buy Rock Band 2 and maybe a second guitar for bass goodness. Epic Fail. Not in stock anywhere.

HMV
GAME
Gamestation
WHSmiths
Currys

So I've come home, hit up Amazon and ordered it online, but it means there shall be no jamming at the bbq tonight.

Oh, and I got drums instead of a second guitar. I'm sure Izzy won't mind <.<
