I think someone is spying on my computer...
2009-04-28, 11:06 AM #1
Over the past few weeks, some people have found out about secrets that only I and a some select people share. We talk about this stuff on MSN. Why do I know they themselves are not letting this info out? Because it would hurt their image a lot more than it would hurt me, for people to know this kind of information. They can gain nothing from telling this stuff. Another thing is, the people who find are finding out about this stuff have NOTHING in common with the people I know. There are just too many unexplained links in the chain.

Theirfore I believe it has to be a sniffer or a keylogger that has avoided detection up to this point. Someone is finding out personal data and telling other people about it. I've even been receiving anonymouos blackmailing. What the hell do I do?
Nothing to see here, move along.

Start talking about really outrageous things and see if they spread those rumors as well.

However, it's most likely that one of your friends is the leak, I doubt anyone's going to go through the trouble to keylog you.

I like Kirby's idea.
Talk about some really messed up things. Like involving dead people.

Like I said, the info that is being leaked will gain them nothing but negativeness from their friends. The only OTHER explanation is that I am the leak. Which I know I am not.

So because your friends would have more to lose means that they WOULDN'T have spyware on their machines?

Your logic makes no sense.

Or maybe... YOU'RE the leak

you'd think someone who craves attention as much as sf_goldg_01 wouldn't mind too much if he were being "spied upon"

Nah, I don't gain anything from telling this to anyone either. On the other hand, my friends trust is more important to me.

Wait, why do you keep information about people on your computer? Do you write a gossip column or something?

Seriously, what's more plausible:

(1) A person has let something slip, knowingly or otherwise
(2) Someone you know has gone to the effort to BREAK INTO YOUR COMPUTER and set up a keylogger or some other crap.

Wakey wakey Goldy.

I bet they're blackmailing SF_GoldG_01 with the fact that not a single person on a Star Wars video game message board has even the slightest amount of respect for him.

Well it hasn't been just one thing... it has been various. I don't keep my conversations stored on my computer, so they can't see them. The other logical idea is that the other person stores their conversations and their computer and someone stole them or saw em. Here is one of the things. A girl and I had a relationship a couple years ago right? So we obviously had sex and we talked about it over MSN. Well, she never talks about that stuff to anyone not even her friends. I am the only person she trusts and thats how it is. I keep her anonymous for obvious reasons. Well as it turns out, people found out about our conversations and started bugging her and me, giving her a bad name. She swears she didn't tell anyone, and I know I didn't either. None of her friends have ever used her computer and none of those guys have either. So it has to be something that was able to see her recorded conversations. This is just one case.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Right now in Mexico, you have earthquakes, swine flu, drug wars, violence, complete lack of government control and societal collapse, and you're worried about whether or not Chavez knows that you banged Isabella.

What the hell is wrong with you. No one cares. Not your friends, and especially not us.

Are there any unsecure points between your computers... for example are either of you using a public wireless connection? I know that older versions of MSN used to have a largely plaintext protocol similar to IRC, they would be able read most of the conversation just by monitoring the packets.

I bet their MSN saves the conversations to their system and one of their friends/relatives read them.

Probably the most plausible theory.

No, I don't use the wirless feature in my computer. Some of them do however. I don't keep records of conversations and I'm pretty sure they don't either. The tap has to be on the other side then.

SF_GoldG_01 had a crush on a girl and, after several minutes of stammering, managed to choke out a dinner invitation through the Cheeto-colored spittle crusting over the corners of his mouth. The girl, thinking that SF_GoldG_01 is mentally handicapped, decided to reluctantly accept the invitation fearing that SF_GoldG_01 would otherwise sit down immediately on the floor and bawl loudly.

Later that night, SF_GoldG_01 told one of his friends - rather, people he regards as friends but don't actually like him - that he banged this dumb slut. That friend recounted the tale to SF_GoldG_01's entire circle of friends so they could laugh at him behind his back. Later, the news got back to the girl and she (truthfully) denies it vehemently. I imagine the phrasing of her response to any inquiry sounded something like "Ugh, no!" (Although it may have been preceded by an upside-down exclamation mark, the important part is italicized.)

The most special part about all of this is that SF_GoldG_01 sincerely believes that he is not detestable enough for his friends to risk a marginal amount of embarrassment for the sake of ripping into him behind his back, which I propose is thoroughly incorrect.

In short, your security problems are being caused by operator error.
