Do you believe in Aliens?
2009-05-17, 8:58 AM #41
The equation is a collection of undefined variables, so the answer you end up with is determined by the assumptions/approximations you're using. If you think planet formation is constant across all of the universe and then put your guess for that number in, sure there's no aliens.

Basically, the equation is tricky confirmation bias. Make conservative (read: ignorant) postulations, and you'll get a conservative estimate of alien life. The Drake equation isn't necessarily incorrect, we just don't have the hard information needed for the equation to be useful or accurate.

I believe 100% that there are other sentient beings out in the universe, but I don't believe that they've come to earth.

As for lifeforms in our solar system, one of the most likely candidates would be Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter. Beneath its forzen crust supposedly lies a deep ocean. There is life on our planet in the deepest reaches of the ocean, in places that were never touched by the sun. So, there is a possibility. Of course, as of now, I believe the deep ocean remains an educated theory rather than a confirmed fact.

Life on Mars, outside of bacterial lifeforms, would be rather surprising to me.

Because the question, "why should it be believed?" cannot be given a satisfactory answer. aka science.

The presence of amino acids on meteorites, such as the Murchison meteorite, is reasonably strong evidence that it's possible other life exists in the galaxy. Intuition suggests that, given the size of our galaxy, life probably exists somewhere else. Maybe even intelligent life. But there's no way to know yet, so all I can say is "maybe." I highly, highly doubt we've been visited by extraterrestrial life. The best evidence supporting such a thought is thin at best.

That doesn't answer my question. See JediKirby's responds.

Lies. The earth is flat. Extra-terrestrials are an illusion created by the New World Order.

Is it inconceivable that whatever civilizations out there are far more advanced than ours and searching for others. That they did not die out and found ways to continuing surviving? In a universe of possibilities and with the possibilities that formed us and allowed us to evolve and become a more advanced species, this is quite conceivable.
Nothing to see here, move along.

During the Mesozoic era, God went through a very emotional period in his life, because he was being picked on by Satanasaurus Rex. Rather than making beings in his own image, he populated the Earth with giant lumbering chalk nosed reptiles. Other scriptures such as the Dead Primordial Sea scrolls suggest that God was actually a muslim dinosaur during his teens, and was the true inspiration for Godzilla, and ramadam.
Opponents of his theory, primarily the Romans, viciously attacked Him and his followers, condemning them to extinction.

Raptor Jesus is set to make a return to earth in the year 2019², where he will undertake a cage fight against Chuck Norris and Mr. T in separate cages simultaneously. Many critics debate whether or not the fight will go ahead, but according to Raptor Jesus's Myspace, it will.

These lizard people are living proof of Raptor Jesus. After the world ends in 2012, he will be able to manifest a new colony on Earth and create a civilization that will maintain perfect world order. No more politics, no more bull****.

I can't bring my conspiring nutjob side to this site, this site is reserved for my nerd side. Otherwise I would post page upon page of info here that would probably make a lot of you think differently.

You assume we'd read long enough before exploding into a name-calling debate lead by Jon'C opposing the downs cavalry.

I don't "believe" that aliens exist. However, it seems quite possible that they do. It's an interesting subject to say the least. I will "believe" in aliens when I see evidence that shows their existence as more than just a possibility.
? :)

Personally, I don't really care if they exist or not, at the moment. Makes absolutely no difference to me. I'm more interested in mankind reaching out into our solar system and beyond on our own. If we happen to run into another humanoid race, great. Otherwise...meh.
