Memorial Day
2009-05-25, 8:43 AM #1
May everyone have a safe and enjoyable memorial day, and remember to pay respect to our nation's men and women who have given their lives in defense of our freedoms, and to their family members who have felt the pain of that sacrifice in a very real way.

Highest regards and sincerest appreciation to all directly affected by the meaning of this holiday.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

And for all the Brits, enjoy your Spring Bank Holiday.

Unless you're Irish.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

You probably think you're being funny, but you're not. Maybe some day when your family member dies, you'll learn to appreciate the sacrifice they've made.

I reported your post, and if you don't get banned for this statement, you're going on ignore, because I no longer have any interest in anything you have to say.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I found it humourous.

And personally if anyone from his country died in service at the moment, I'm really not sure what they sacrificed themselves for. It sure as hell wasn't "protecting my freedom".

[Also I don't mean to derail this thread.]
nope.

...good luck with that. Maybe next time it'd be funnier if it wasn't on Memorial day, the day we celebrate the sacrifices those in the armed forces make in service to our country. And when someone in your country's armed forces does anything, they do it for YOU. Regardless of what it is, they are exerting your will. So to spit on them is hypocrisy. Yeah, I get it, it was a joke, but if you didn't notice, we spent all day thinking about what those people sacrificed, so forgive us if we don't laugh.

No, what pisses me off is people who "celebrate" Memorial Day.

You don't ****ing celebrate and have BBQ's! You remember those who died serving their country in war; wars that actually protected our freedoms.

Our family reunion was on Sunday so that we could actually observe Memorial Day the way it was supposed to be.

Theres a rather large ocean between your country and mine.

My town has a pretty big history with Memorial day. Same goes for my family. We typically have the parade followed by a ceremony. The ceremony includes a list of the fallen soildiers from my town. This year we had Sailors and Marines who are in NYC for fleet week come up to march in the parade.

After all of that we usually have a BBQ of some sort. I guess it's technically a celebration. We're celebrating our relatives who returned home from service safely. Currently I have a few family members serving. One just returned from Iraq, and his brother just went out to the middle east to finish up his 3 years out there. At the same time it is a remembrance of our family members and friends that have fallen. so yeah, some people have good reason to celebrate :D

I've got no problems with a celebration, in the same way that I want my funeral to be more a celebration of my life instead of a mourning of my death. But I don't like that people use it as an excuse to get drunk, without any thought or respect to the meaning for the holiday.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

woah way to ruin a thread meant to honour the dead.

I'd be in the service if I was eligible, my best friends are in the army.

You don't celebrate that they're dead, you celebrate that they went into harm's way knowing they COULD die. I agree with you, however, if you are referring to having some big drunken party, yes. A BBQ, living your life, having a good time, though, that's exactly what they fight for. Your right to live your life the way you want.

And are you saying that you don't respect soldiers who died in wars that "didn't actually protect our freedoms"? That's bull****. Like I said in my last post, I don't care where or how they died, or were wounded, or had nothing at all bad happen to them. It's the fact that they are somewhere, putting their lives on the line at our country's will.

Oh, and Baconfish, I'm sorry, did you not notice it was memorial day, a day to remember to pay respect to our nation's men and women who have given their lives? Even though you are posting in a thread entitled "Memorial Day" the first post of which asks you to "remember to pay respect to our nation's men and women who have given their lives"? Don't play dumb, and don't pull the "America isn't the center of the universe" card. You're smarter than that.

Actually I didn't notice "we spent all day thinking about what those people sacrificed".

Because that sure as hell doesn't sound like barbeques and parades to me.

well, in a day late. (or 3 days early) but just hoping everyone had a good memorial day and took at least a few minutes to reflect on and maybe even celebrate the men and women who despite the risk served our country. (i suppose baconfish can have a pass on account of the "large ocean")
also many thanks to all massassians who are currently serving in the military :)

It's not really an issue of America vs. not america. It's an issue of individuals.

Edit: Baconfish, I was trying to point out that maybe the reason you find it to be a load of bollocks is because you aren't here, whether that be the US or specifically Oklahoma, where we actually observe the holiday. I'm here, and it's not just an excuse to cook hotdogs to us.
