Let's be realistic here... in an ideal world every soldier who joins up does it to help people they've never even met before because the world needs heros. In the real world, people join up because they are more or less interested in the experience/career/benefits. But I respect the armed forces because of how professionally they handle their relatively sensitive (in this age of information/mass media) work.

I don't see how Mort's comment was disrespectful. If anything, he's agreeing with the rest of us by poking fun at the idiots who think soldiers are in hell.

I'm with TNK. We're back in Forget-The-Troops-Year now. See you on Veterans Day.

Yes. I doubt he even bothered to consider the meaning of the statement and instead went for, "Ugh, WELL, I don't want to have ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOU EVER AGAIN."

Sarn shouldn't hate the guy because of a dumb post, but Mort clearly didn't think his thought out before hitting submit. I got what he meant after thinking about it for a second, but it was sort of stupid and unnecessary. Certainly no reason to feign overwhelming distaste. He clearly was trying to be ironic.

I recognize he wasn't being serious. I even said as much in my post immediately following his. That's not the point. First of all, he used the term "fags" which is derogatory and against the rules. Second, he took a stab at religion, which is purposely inciteful, and third, he disrespected the whole purpose of this thread by doing exactly opposite of what was requested. It wasn't the least bit humorous, and in fact, I'm disgusted that I have to defend myself over being offended by his disrespect.

In addition, I'm sure I speak for some others here when I say that this is especially sensitive for those of us who have had friends and/or family members die in combat. Think twice before you make light about that. Imagine telling a joke about the 9/11 to someone who's brother died in one of the towers. Would that person be over-reacting to be offended? Even if you didn't know, there are some things in life that require a little tact.

[edit: Oh and I don't "hate" him, Kirbs. I just think that if he's stupid enough to make a comment like that, then nothing else he'll ever have to say will be worth the time it takes to read it.]
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

You're missing the point. It's not just that he wasn't serious, it's that the irony of his post conveys the exact opposite: that he does in fact respect the men and women who have died (at least indirectly, as he isn't a citizen), by mocking the people who don't. At least, that's what I got from it.

Yeah, right, I'm sure you're so offended by that. We aren't debating his being banned, but his actual statement.

No, he took a stab at crazy, religious fundamentals.

You're allowed to be offended, no one is arguing that. I just think you are overreacting and missing his point.

If I were mocking the individuals who believe that 9/11 was a hoax, then yes, I think they would be overreacting. By mocking the hoaxers, you're effectively in agreement.

You can make an accurate judgment for an individual for the rest of time based on one comment?
