My reasoning behind my Doom 3 'bashing' (proof inside!)

Helle's right. My dad and I got Doom 3 because we're both fans of the original. It's really the first more "next gen" game we've got, and both of us thinks it looks sexy. That's sexy at 640x480, bump-mapped, specular on if the machine can handle it, low detail, no AA or AF, etc., etc..

And it's playable too. It's fun. It's relatively long for an FPS. And it's scary.

I'm looking forward to both HL2 and STALKER, but Far Cry didn't appeal to me as much as other games.

What kind of argument is "you are not supposed to do this and that (stare at walls or whatever) because that is not how the game is meant to be played"?

A good one.

And Tony basically summed up everything I think. I just hope HL2 doesn't suck, and have faith STALKER won't.

I think the shotgun looks more plastic WITHOUT specular mapping. Dull grey plastic. Not cute shiney metal like it should be.

Actually, the reason Doom 3 looks bad is a combination of the fact that the designs are really stupid, and something called the uncanny valley.

Never thought I'd defend SAJN_Master, but no...your wrong. His fps is low because of the video recording software he used.

Agreed. Except for STALKER, not looking forward too it, but not going to knock it either.

What is the console command to spawn an enemy? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]

spawn monster_demon_(whatever) (i.e. spawn monster_demon_imp, spawn monster_demon_hellknight)

That's pretty decent Jim. What kind of framerates you getting? I'm guessing in the 50-60s. I only got a 9600XT Athlon 2100 XP and remarkably I'm able to run the game at high detail, averaging 30 - 40, but down to 20 lowest when **** really hits the fan.

What's the command for the time demo? I'm guessing I'll be in the lower 30s. Also, I'm running 2xAA, so that might have to do with the occasional drops.

What is the timedemo? I have been typing benchmark in the console and it gives me around 50-60fps, but I know that cant be right because fraps says I average 40+ fps. What is the difference?

The real world is plastic.

No really... look around. How many things do you see made of plastic?!

back a few decades ago, everything was made of metal. So it would be likely to conclude that everything will be made of plastic in the future, even your skin.

Yeah but the point kind of is, if you used the various types of mapping more sparingly, things would appear as they should. Characters look much better without spec mapping, and weapons (some) look better with it. The problem is, metal objects should appear more GLOSSY than they do in Doom 3. That is where the real issues arise.

I made a few renders in lightwave to illustrate my point.

This is shiny. Like metal. It has no texuture, but that puts it in line with most things in Doom 3.

This one is more plastic looking due to the fact that it is less glossy. It is still as shiny, but much less glossy.

Had they properly implemented the effects they had at their fingers, they would have made a truly wonderful looking game. But the fact that it looks trashy up close, and everything shines the same, really takes alot away from it.

And give it up, would you, not all walls look pixelated and crappy up close. Go play Serious Sam, and then play a fun game called grow a brain.

is that the doom3 chaingun model, or is it one you made?

Either way, it looks excellent. and no, it doesn't look plastic to me. The first one looks like its made of steel, the second one looks like its chrome-plated. Both look good.

however, if the edges seemed smoothed out and
the angles seemed slightly rounded, then yeah, it would look like plastic.

I've done a little playing around in D3D and well if you want to go back to Non BM'ing then say goodbye to anything that has curves, flat water, low poly models, maybe if you can show an example of a FPS without BMing that has equal detail and performance...
