Quote:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2009 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to turn back discrimination and prejudice everywhere it exists.

Making a proclamation against bigotry and discrimination is somehow a bad thing?
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Awareness initiatives mean absolutely nothing. We are all plenty aware of discrimination against minorities, gays, etc. Until Obama actually DOES something about it, yes, naming a month "LGBT pride month" is stupid and really doesn't mean anything to actually help LGBT issues.

Where's my White Male Pride month! Who's discriminating now? What an idiotic path this has taken...

mb has a point - also I think, if it's true, it's a symbolic thing. He's throwing his support behind the GLBT community

I agree with mb and sugarless. It may not do anything to help, but it does show that they have his support.

This. You would have to be blinded by something, such as political bias, to not see the value of the proclamation in itself. He's in a position where setting such an example will inevitably bear meaning in countering the issues of prejudice and discrimination.

The fact of the matter is that Obama hasn't done a single thing for gay rights. And hasn't really announced actual plans to.

Thank you. Funny how you say it and no one jumps down your throat

Kroko, I'm not politically biased. McCain would've been no different; I didn't even vote for either of them because you know what? All politicians today are just walking talking promise machines. I'll clean up Washington! I'll end the war on poverty! The War on Drugs will end! I'll help fix the education system! How long have those things been promised by the so-called most important man in the United States, and how many of them have been fulfilled? Absolutely none. There is no reason for me to believe that Obama will do anything to solve LGBT problems, because as of right now, he's just acted like most every other politician. He talks big, but has yet to do anything really other than spend copious amounts of money. I don't see him going around the US parading his support of LGBT issues, helping end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", etc etc. If he was SOOOOO concerned about this, he probably would actively be doing something ABOUT them rather than just make "LGBT Pride month".

I hope he does something, I really do. But it's not like Black History Month has done anything to help solve racial discrimination against blacks. Right now LGBT Pride Month means absolutely nothing, unless there is something that Obama does to go along with it. So yeah, as of right now, these awareness initiatives are meaningless.

This is stupid. Vin's got it right. If Obama wants to support gay rights, then that's great. Making a month an official "gay pride" month is stupid. He can support them all he wants on his own time, but personally, I'm sick of all these "pride" months and holidays, in fact I'm sick of the government specially promoting ANY groups. It's not their place.

If gay people want to be proud, then be proud, dammit! You have the right, and I'm with you all the way! GTFO, government.

Because all white straight men are racist homophobes.

Also, maybe if people weren't so proud of it, if we dropped this nonsense that it's 'perfectly normal' and treated it like a disease without all this PC garbage, some actual research would be done on the topic that could lead to a cure or at least the discovery of the cause of much worse sexual deviances like beastiality and pedophilia.

Here here. Pretty much my biggest reason of voting against Prop 8. Get the **** out, government. Get the **** out of my private life. That and I really wanted to stick it to the fundies.

Eight years I've seen an increase of government under false pretenses of protection and security and a RAPID increase in the Morality Brigade to make sure that they tell me what I can and can't do. Now, I'm seeing an increase in government control of economics. Yeah yeah, call me all :tinfoil: and say that I'm no better than someone of the John Birch Society.

I really wish Thomas Jefferson was here.

i agree with this. i really dont mean for this to be offensive but if it is then... well too bad. you can make all the non binding resolutions and "fill in the blank" pride days you want. but unless you have something of actual substance to back it up it does nothing! if you want to end bigotry and racism you have to work with people on an individual person to person level. somthing that "blank" pride day falls dismally short of.

I agree. Less pandering to the deviants and more research.
