I have a confession to make...

What a sad day it was. Yesterday, while shopping around FYE, I spotted the new Green Day album for $7.99, and with all the great reviews Green Day albums always get, I figured it was about time to give Green Day a chance.

Well I'm sorry to say it, but Green Day wins this round. After about three or so solid listens I will say, it is a very good album indeed.

Anyway, the bottom line is, I may not consider myself a Green Day fan, but after being a Green Day hater all these years (without ever listening to any of their music) I must say, shame on me.

I'm not that keen on the single either, but it does sound better in the context of the album at about a million decibels.

It good, but it's not as good as American Idiot.

(All their albums are good, and Warning is VERY underrated)

Of all the bands you could have given a chance, why some boring mainstream alternative rock band? You could expand your musical horizons and give a chance to, say, Yat-Kha, or Claudio Monteverdi, or Schelmish, or, I don't know, Stimmhorn or something!

Going out of your way to give Green Day a chance seems so unambitious!

Their last two albums haven't been "mainstream", per say, at least with the regards to their previous. And it's perfectly okay to like music that's mainstream.
Pissed Off?

Most of the bands that I discover are through friends. For example I discovered The Unicorns, The Streets, Gogol Bordells, The Toadies, and Explosions in the Sky through friends. That doesn't mean I can't explore other mainstream bands as well. I actually just discovered Coldplay and Death Cab For Cutie a couple of months ago when their new albums came out. Since then I've bought both of their discographies.

Green Day was the joint first band (alongside The Offspring) that I heard that got me listening to music other than video game music.

And that was back in year... 8? Borrowed the CDs from a classmate.

I still kinda like their stuff.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Mainstream = win more often than a lot of people like to admit.

Today, I listened to Never Forget by Take That. I don't care that they're a boy band, it's a great pop record.
2009-06-07, 2:24 PM #10
Explosions in the Sky isn't exactly unknown.
2009-06-07, 2:46 PM #11
I didn't say there's anything wrong with liking mainstream music. It's just that if something is mainstream, it's pretty safe to assume that it's going to at least be listenable, since it appeals to a wide audience. Thus, to 'give it a chance' seems unambitious to me!

Different genres appeal to different age groups. So Miley Cyrus might be mainstream, but it's mainstream to teeny-boppers- not everyone.

Greenday was cool in middleschool.
Have not listened to it since.

Insomniac is pretty underrated too.

I listened to some of the tracks on the new album, but I did not really care much for them. I probably should give it a few more lessons before I cast judgment on it.

I have Dookie and American Idiot. I like them.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

21st Century Breakdown has some standout tracks for sure, but it really was in the end just more of the same off of American Idiot, which I guess isn't a bad thing.

Peacemaker and Static Age are both pretty good songs, Peacemaker being my favorite off the album. As a whole, It definitely has a "The Who" vibe for sure, with some of the moments just screaming Quadrophenia.

One thing that has made it difficult for me to get into music, is that I don't know what people mean when people say one band sucks. What are the desirable characteristics of music, and how do I learn to listen for them?

Music is good if you enjoy it, if you find it interesting or intellectually stimulating, or it moves you emotionally.

Blech. Garbage band. Can't stand punk rock as it is but greenday has always been extra special garbage. If you prefer that genre you should check out alkaline trio. Much better, if better is what you'd call it.

ha. your edit says it all.

Srsly, I'm severely disappointed with Green Day's newer (basically last 2) albums. The originality that used to exist is gone, leaving only annoying loops of the same political garbage over and over.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Lassev: I guess there was something captivating in savagery, because I liked it.

I haven't heard the whole album but I imagine its pretty cool. Green Day arent so bad :ninja:

Plus if you want 'genuine' punk or whatever, listen to Leftover Crack!

Green Day was better about 10 years ago. Now they are just 30-something year old emo kids.... get past it guys.

Why? Punk hasn't existed since 1979.

The album is pretty meh in parts, and both singles so far have been part of that meh. It's pretty good but it's not as good as American Idiot.

And I'm fairly sure every other Greenday album was meh apart from Dookie.

The "sucks" is just badly worded opinion spouting, people can't be bothered explaining why they don't particularly like a band. Don't bother listening to other people's opinion and listen for what you enjoy I guess, you robot. Maybe you should start with Billy Joel, Elton John or Frank Sinatra. :ninja:

You don't really think that they're going to be dressed like that all the time when they're not in public doing gigs or promotion?

It's not like someone like Alice Cooper does all the makeup and crap when he's Vincent Furnier.
nope.
2009-06-08, 10:38 PM #35
i would say they 'suck' because they are incapable of writing more then 3 chord progressions and playing straight 2+4 beats. This is the grand failure of all bands in this genre.

They're all pretty normal dudes. I've seen them walking around Berkeley and so forth over the years.

I would say they don't because they've had a string of successful albums and singles, made a load of money from touring and have a large and dedicated fanbase.

But, you know, whatever.

I really like mainstream music. I'm guessing a lot of other people do too because it tends to sell a lot more.

But people always frown upon it for some reason...
