Play-by-play (Engadget): http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/phil-schiller-keynote-live-from-wwdc-2009/

Summary:

  • Unibody Macbooks "discontinued"

  • Macbook now exclusively the white Macbook
  • Price cuts: 13" MBP starts at $1199, 15" at 1699 (but no 9600M GT!), 17" at 2499
  • Some peripheral updates (FW800 is now on the 13" MBP, SD card slot added, ExpressCard slot removed, etc.)

New MBP lineup: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro?mco=MTE4NDY

  • Snow Leopard shipping in September
  • $29 upgrade for current Leopard users
  • $10 upgrade for all purchasers of a new Mac with Leopard between now and December

  • iPhone 3G S
  • I don't care about the iPhone so I dunno exactly what they added except video recording and compass and random stuff, click the Engadget link or check apple.com

This WWDC didn't blow me away, a release date for Snow Leopard is the major thing for me.

so, if the 3G got a price cut, what does that do for the original version?

Yeah I think the best thing to come out of this WWDC is the new 13" MB(P). With education pricing it's $1099 + free iPod Touch ... for the first time in god knows how long Apple has actually put out a price/value-competitive product?!

It's really bugging me right now that I have absolutely zero need to get one. Otherwise I would get one.

The 15" MBP refresh is sorta meh ... they basically axed the 9600M GT (which was the main reason to get a 15" MBP in the first place) and made a larger version of the 13" MBP for 1699 and put the 9600M GT at 1999. So nothing's really changed except there's a 15" "MacBook" now.

<CoolMatty> wow I just noticed, the new 13 mbp doesnt have a microphone port
<genk> oh snap
<CoolMatty> the headphone jack is both, so you have to pick one or the other.
<CoolMatty> and no digital input at all
<genk> does it support bluetooth?

Wait don't all the MB/MBPs have built in mics anyways?

yeah, and if you are needing to do anything "pro" with it just grab an maudio box cheap. onboard audio isn't great for that anyways.

I'll get Snow Leopard, but only because its $29. The "new features" dont look impressive.

Also, the new quicktime logo is horrendous

Yeah, only thing that exites me is Bootcamp 3.0 and hopefully some Windows touchpad drivers that are less sucky.

I'm getting a 13" MBP with Izzy's edu discount with the free iPod.

WANT.

Snow leopard?

Did they run out of cool sounding big cats already?
nope.
2009-06-09, 6:19 AM #15
It's a minor update - hence they just sort of 'updated' Leopard. It's not a proper release per se. It's under the bonnet stuff.

I'm hoping to get an iMac in the next few weeks. There doesn't seem to be any good news in that department. :(
? :)

Not only did the other macbooks have optical in (thus eliminating any excuse about quality), but I use it quite often for piping things from one PC to another.

Big loss there.

If it isn't running Android, WebOS, or iPhone OS, it's a crap phone. :colbert:

Apple doesn't care about desktops anymore :ninja:

Seriously, though, they need to come out w/ something like the G4 Cube except less fail to fit in between the iMac and the Mac Pro. A minitower or tower that isn't a laptop on a stand and that doesn't cost upwards of $2500 is exactly what I want, but isn't available from Apple so I have to build it for myself :(

Edit:

You're looking at it backwards. Apple isn't missing a form factor, they're missing a market segment - and they're missing it deliberately. If you look at the range of activities that are possible with the Mac Pro and the iMac, you only have one left out: gaming. Apple hates games.

Just ask Gabe Newell and John Carmack.

WOAH.

If I get a 13" MBP I'll actually be able to play some PC games with dual booting/parallels.

This **** just got real.

GAH

$1349 (refurb) on the pre-update 15" MBP (w/ the 9600M GT) is just wanting me to get it BUT I DONT NEED IT :( :(

Even better news for me (paradoxically) - Izzy's 1st gen Nano just died: the screen is bleeding. She's remembered I can get a free iPod touch (at first she didn't want one) so is now encouraging me to get the education deal so she can have an iPod for the honeymoon!

Effing SCORE.

Hey, so

$1450 for an i7 build w/ 23" monitor
or
$1450 for a 15" MBP (the pre-yesterday version)

Serious question

For day-to-day desktop-style (mostly stationary, heavy multitasking, productivity, light games like TF2) use at college.

I already have a tablet to serve as a mobile computer (<3) otherwise I would've gone for the 13" MBP.

There's no way you're going to get a serious answer unless you tell us what's in the i7 build.

MBP has a 1440x900 screen resolution and a 9600M GT. It supports DirectX 10 features but the 9600M GT is roughly comparable to a five year old card (Radeon 9800 XT) in terms of performance. Unless the i7 has the cheapest integrated graphics possible it's going to demolish the MBP, even running at 1920x1200.

I will never understand why anyone would pay so much more for the same hardware in a mac.
2009-06-10, 4:09 AM #29
I've had a PowerBook 4 years, and it's still tip top. I'll get £300 for it on eBay. I'm paying £845 for a new version that will last me another 4 years. It works with minimum upkeep, will have a 7 hour battery life and will generally do everything I want it to do with no complaints or ****ups.

It's well worth the money.

Less than Ninja Edit:

Well that was cool. Not only do I get the laptop with discount (£845 instead of £899), I get an iPod Touch for Izzy for £165 with a £145 rebate AND it turns out an HP printer for £50 with a £60 rebate.

Well, for me it was helpful because I used OSX on a daily basis at school. It was helpful to have a computer I could run Final Cut Pro on at home. Then there was the fact the macbook pro i bought could run boot camp. Also, student discounts ftw.

oh and also having a mac makes you look cool. :eng101:

That's the point. You aren't getting the Incite. :carl:

I'm still laughing at the fact the iPhone doesn't have multitasking still, they're still holding on to that battery life excuse. The iPhone 3GS is supposed to be as fast if not faster than the Pre, with bettery battery life, and they can't manage it? It's pretty sad that they're forcing developers to reimplement various iPhone apps into their own apps (like embedding email) instead of just being able to launch the proper app externally without closing.

Combine that with the schizm that will occur from OpenGL 2 ES on the iPhone 3GS vs OpenGL 1 ES on the iPhone 3G/2G, and Apple is really trying to make it hard for developers. Not only will they have to either choose one set of devices or the other (since OpenGL 2 and 1 are not even remotely forward/backward compatible), or double development time to support both.

Glad I'm not an iPhone dev.
