Beer Thread 6/9/09

We haven't had one of these lately, and with school out and no one hiring 1Ls, I've had plenty of time to drink beer.

Earlier with dinner, had Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin. It's a wheat beer... and an IPA! It's hoppy! It's wheaty! It's pretty much the perfect summer beer.

Now drinking Stone Imperial Russian Stout, which we just got in Texas a week ago. It's making a strong case for all-time-favorite status. I need to find a way to try this side-by-side with Oak-Aged Yeti without actually having to drink two 22-oz. bottles of ~10% ABV stout.

I still enjoy Newcastle the most for my everyday summer beer. Bell's Oberon is pretty damn good, and I believe now it's brewed all year round

I wish I could get Bell's here. I've had Oberon once, out of a mini-keg my roommate brought back from Michigan, and I'd probably have appreciated it more then if I'd known beer as well two years ago as I do now. I missed out on a lot of good stuff when I lived in Chicago (a lot of the Three Floyds lineup, almost everything from New Holland and Bell's, Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, everything from Great Lakes) that I can't get now.

Yuengling, Guinness, Blue Moon, and goddamnit I don't care if I'm a guido Heineken.

And there's some locals I've been trying out that are pretty fly but I can't remember the names of them at the moment.

SC, what's with the beer on the right? I've never seen it before, and I can't find any reference to a Rogue Imperial Pale Ale online either. Is it a glass-bottle edition of I2PA, or something else entirely?

Also, all you guys who have Bell's, send me some Bell's.

It's Rogue XS Imperial India Pale Ale. Most of the Google image results show it in the aluminum (i think?) bottle, but I've only had it in a glass bottle.

There are different types of favorite beers: Chill time beers, get drunk beers, and favorite beers.

Chill time beers: Flat Tire, Sam Adams Boston Lager (or variety pack), Shiner, Corona (or any mexican import)

Get drunk beers: Heineken, Stella Artois, Shiner 99, Negra Modelo, Becks

Favorites: Hoegaarden, Leinenkugle (both summer white beers), Guinness

Just a short list

Okay, so it is the one I was thinking of. I've only seen it sold in the 750ml ceramic bottle, which is the one you're seeing in the image search. I had it once on draught at a local restaurant. Definitely tasty, if a little rough around the edges.

I'm a little disappointed that they retired this one. They just released a smoked Helles, though (99 was a regular Helles) that I'm interested to try.

What's wrong with Heineken?

I still haven't tried anything better than Isle of Arran Blonde Ale, or a mysterious beer made by "Schmucker" that I tried on tap in Spain.

Usually I shoot for a cider though. Or Carlsberg Export.
nope.

I've heard snide jokes about Heineken as well, but I also don't know where they come from. I think it's a delicious beer for pretty much any occasion.

Domestic mainstream nascar horse piss beers = FAIL

Fat Tire FTW.

I avoided this beer for the longest time because it had a picture of an old bicycle on it, and I thought it looked pretty wussy. So having tried every beer Henry's and Trader Joes sales, I finally gave in and tried it. Man was I wrong, this beer is awesome! All that time wasted... :awesome:

Trader Joe's has some EXCELLENT beer deals. I wish there was one closer than 40 miles from my house, or I'd go there all the damn time.

I wish Grocery Stores could sell beer here. I always hear about Trader Joe's good beers and there's one right up the street.

I drink a lot of Fordham beers (A local brewery, right across the street from where I work), since they're deals and most places in the area have them on tap. Otherwise Guinness or Sam Adams, depending on what the seasonal is.

I can't think of any stigma it carries around here. :(

I'm drinking some wife beater at the moment though. :D
nope.

Northwestern? Really?

Edit: Oh yea, Blue Moon.

This past weekend I had Rogue Dead Guy Ale for the first time, I liked it quite a bit. I also had Great Lakes Glockenspiel, which is very good but too sweet.

Someone should start a Tequila thread. MMMMMMMM

I prefer hommade brews to store bought ones, but if I am going to drink something I usually have a Stella or Heinekin (FTW). Since I am more a pothead than an alcohol consumer, in my eyes alcohol is alcohol. 6.5 volume alcohol per beer is the same as another beer @ 6.5 alcohol per can, taste may be different but I'm still getting just as drunk as if I spent a few dollars more on the better tasting alcohol.

Class of '08. :XD:

Edit: To make this post beer-related, that is a 25-oz. tankard. I can pour an entire bomber into it.

Me too (but you know that already). High five broseph! How's law school? Easy? Hard? A friend just graduated this year and he's going to OSU for law, most likely specializing in patent law or whatevs as he's an engineer.

Also, WHERE did you get that? Do they sell it at the bookstore?
2009-06-10, 8:19 PM #29
I got it at Beck's right after I graduated, never saw it at the campus bookstore. It's got the words to Go U Northwestern on the other side in case I get too blasted to remember them.

I've got mixed feelings about the actual difficulty of law school. The first year, at least, is an emotionally, physically, and intellectually exhausting experience. Part of that is inevitable, as we're expected to read and understand difficult cases on a daily basis and be prepared to explain them in class. I'm just not sure how much of it is self-inflicted. Law school tends to attract type-As who study beyond the point at which further study ceases to be useful, and just about every law school uses a curve (our grades are curved to a B+), so if you're good at essay tests, a quick study, or just plain smarter than your classmates, you can get away with a lot less studying than most law students will report doing.

So I guess what I'd say is: It's hard. It's a lot harder than anything else I've ever done. But it doesn't have to be the life-devouring time-suck that a lot of people make it into.

Anyway, I understand you're in Houston now. If you ever make it up to Austin, let me know and we'll grab a beer.

In other news: Finally killed off the Widmer Drifter in my fridge. I wanted to like this one, but there's something about the finish that's just not right. Won't buy again.

Beer is for pussies who can't handle liquor.
2009-06-10, 8:30 PM #31
Oh please. I frequently enjoy a glass of scotch or bourbon, or a dry martini, but for me nothing beats the variety and complexity of good beer.

I knew a guy a few years ago that drank over 100 beers in three days. While going to classes. During the week. I don't think "pussy" really applies there.

three days? pft I could do it in two.

Talking about how cool you are because you can drink so much isn't cool.

Well I'm an alcohol so it it makes me seem cooler than my alchy friends.

It's already been disproved before in another thread that JM couldn't physically drink as much alcohol as he's claimed in the past without dying so I'm fairly sure he can **** right off.

:D
nope.
2009-06-11, 5:21 AM #39
No it hasn't. I've claimed to have drunk 2/3rds of a liter of Captain Morgan at one sitting. You disproved a strawman. Bravo.
