At the base of it, it isn't any different in cases like Michael's, and other celebrities. Celebrities are loved by many within a community (some celebrities are local, some national, some multi-national, and so on). Those people within that community liked/loved him (or whomever) and, as a result are grieving the loss of someone they cared for, to some degree at least.

Different people have different reasons for liking or loving someone that much to be able to grieve for it.

In Michael's case he was loved worldwide by MANY fans thanks to his long-standing career and influence on the pop music industry. As a result, these are the people who are mourning his passing.

Offtopic, but who are you? I've never seen you before.

Yes, I also wondered if there was going to be a new Thriller video with real zombies.

Anyway, seems like somebody was grousing the last a celebrity passed and was noted here. I don't understand why some people get their panties in a wad when someone in the public eye dies, and the public mourns. If you truly don't care when a celebrity dies, why make a big deal about those who do care? You shouldn't care.

On a different note, I remember as a kid riding my bicycle down to the nearest retail store and buying the Thriller album. Back when albums were big, vinyl, and beautiful. It was one of my first albums.

[EDIT: Anyway, sucks for his fans and family. Talented, even though perceived as a bit strange to most.]

Why to people make stupid comments like this? It's not like it's only Americans who do things like this.

I agree

I don't see what is so hard about that "why do people care about celebrities?" question. Are you that thick-headed? Is it wrong for any of us to say we are "sad" to see him die? Someone who produced arguably one of the greatest pop CDs of all time who influenced so many artists that we take for granted today passed away. Why isn't that sad? It's sad when anyone dies, so yeah, it's sad when Michael Jackson dies too.

Hundreds of millions of people listen to Michael Jackson's music. His brand of pop influenced thousands of artists that we enjoy every single day. You'd be hard pressed to find an artist today that didn't like Michael Jackson. The reason why it's big news is because HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of people liked him. HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of people enjoyed his not only his contribution to society, but various charity organizations as well. So yeah, this is BIG news. It is big news because he had such a profound influence on music we hear today, as well as was a big part of the lives of many of our parents. My dad was recounting today that no matter what the **** was up, even if you weren't the biggest MJ fan, you'd still tune in every damn time he was on TV. Radio stations played his albums on loop for days. The music video for Thriller basically created music videos as we know it. He was that good, and had that kind of pull on people.

Not only that, it's simple business, jesus christ. Would it be in the best interest to have every major news network run stories about any of us when we died? Of course not, because relatively no one gives a **** about us. Millions of people DO give a **** about Michael Jackson.

Off topic (cont...)

I don't post much. My 'title' is pretty accurate, as I try not to post too much random stuff, mostly because I'm generally not spontaneous enough for it.

I've been a long time visitor to the site, since WAY back near the beginning (if not at the beginning itself). My friend, Adam (MaDaVentor, for those who don't know) suggested the site and got me into the whole Jedi Knight game.

I was registered at that time, don't recall the name I used though.

My memory is a bit fault here, but either the forums went through a big upgrade, and I had to re-register, OR I forgot my old ID information, but that's besides the point really.

There would be periods where I'd stop visiting the site for varying reasons (non were on purpose, though) but I'd always wind up coming back for a while, at least lurking.

Then, just about 5.5 years ago, Adam passed away, and I was brought back again to share this news with the community he loved so much. Now I'm back to visiting 2+ times a day, minimum.

....

Now, back on topic.

This has seriously been a devastating 3 days for Hollywood. Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and now Michael Jackson. Lets hope that this ends this string of unfortunate and saddening events. :(

I guess mentally he was dead since the late 1990s or so... shame what happened to him, Thriller-era albums were pretty good.

Hopefully those years will be remembered from centuries on rather than the 2000s crippity crap.

You have a point if you are referring to people like Paris Hilton or the Kardashians or persons of that ilk. The former can no sooner jump off a very steep precipice and the latter, well, how have they brought some kind of benefit to society instead of teaching millions of girls to be shallow and superficial.

Patrick Stewart is my favorite actor. He is VERY talented in almost any role. He is very well spoken, light-hearted, and an overall awesome guy. He has brought entertainment and pleasure to MILLIONS and he will be missed sorely when he goes.

Phil Mickelson is my favorite golfer. He plays because he loves the game. He doesn't have his own line of clothing or have games named after him but he is still a top ranked golfer. Also, he's not a raging ******* like some other golfer. Now he is a guy I look up to. I'd give my entire genitalia just to play one round of golf with him. It would be the best 18 holes in my entire life. The world of golf will lose one helluva golfer when he goes.

That's why I "pour my heart out at pathetic celebrities"
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

In response to Couchman:

Generally you would be correct, except that Michael Jackson pretty much single handedly revolutionized modern music as we know it. Countless artists have been inspired, if not blatently ripped him off (justin timberlake, chris brown). He still remains as one of top selling artists in the world (besides 50 Garbage) and was really a top class musician. Its like if Stevie Wonder passed away, only he is far less disturbing.

As for my favorite michael jackson song? Hands down -- Remember the Time. Best groove, and best dance.

"They're everywhere, the little harlots."

I'm not particularly saddened by this. If he was still turning out new, original songs, then maybe I would be. His time has gone, and like all people, he died. He did a lot with his life, whether good or bad, and it's to be respected. But to be upset by his death... it's a little much.

I was going to argue with you Vin, but I think it has already been explained and explained well in this thread. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, even though they are wrong. :) It seems to me that no one here is "upset", but more like "shocked" since he/she/it was only 50 years old and happened suddenly (whereas Ed McMahon's health had been declining fast, but I was saddened by his death as well).

Favorite MJ tunes... hmmm.... it's a toss up between:

Beat It
Billie Jean
Bad
The Way You Make Me Feel
Thriller

I also really liked a lot of the Jackson 5 stuff when MJ was younger. An amazing vocal talent, even from an early age.

But I'll confess, I can't hear most MJ songs without thinking of the Weird Al versions. "Bad" especially. "You know I'm FAT, I'm FAT, I'm really really FAT"

Actually, they're saying now that the whole cardiac arrest thing was just a coverup. He actually died from some kind of bizzare food poisoning.

LA Coroner said he found traces of 13 year old nuts in his mouth.
