Get on another computer and d/l the fix, tranfser it to your comp (burn it to CD, whatever) then run it. Also MS Blaster won't be a problem shut you down if you close your internet connection

There's a tip at Leo's World or something or other that tells you how to cancel those shutdown messages. Basically it's a site Leo Laporte has with TONS of FAQs on computers.

You kill the Remote Procedure Call or something like that. I had to remove it's sorry butt from a few computers at school last year. Then I installed Norton's on them. Never had a problem ever again.

It's not windows messanger is it? I had the problem before I disable messanger (not MSN messanger) I would get pr0n popups out of nowhere all the time. Go to Admistrative Tools -> Services and find Messanger, then stop it and disable, see if that helps.

1) Go out and buy router
2) Get and install AVG. Update, use.
3) Get and install Spybot and AdAware. Update, use.
4) Get and install Firefox, Opera, as per your tastes.
5) Sell me your mortal soul. For a Klondike bar.

No its not the messenger exploit, its actually ads, and they popup from no where, most likely from the 30+ trojans/virus that ruined my computer the instant an internet connection was established lol

There's a statistic I read recently that said that within 20 minutes of hooking up an XP machine to the internet, you can have at least 2 or 3 different viruses.

Twenty minutes.

Yeah, I think I'll stay away from XP. In fact, I can't wait until I get enough cash to go out and purchase a Mac. I feel safe right now, but on a Mac, I'd feel almost invulnerable.

Yeah only on a mac you'd be able to use photoshop, use AIM, browse the internet...browse...the internet. And...well there you go. You could type something up if you want, too! After that, you're duly screwed.

And XP isn't bad--it happens on every windows machine, 2000 and XP moreso than 98 and 95, though. 98 and 95 just go down all on their own.

It is. SP2 helps a little bit, but in the 3 years I've been using XP, I've caught 3 viruses, one of which I downloaded on purpose (long story.) Anyway, I think that 20 minute statistic could be true if you shut down every security feature... but why would you? Even if you're not behind a router, the XP firewall helps a little bit, then you have virus scanners, Spyware scanners, more secure browsers (coughnotIEcough), not to mention all of the security patches.

So don't say XP is the worst thing since Hilter, it is a million more times secure than say... 98? or ME? I don't have any experience with 2000, though. (Granted, linux/unix are more secure than windows could ever be, but I can't see most people switching over to Unix...)

[edit- Oh, I guess I could help. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Try getting/running the following programs:
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware SE
Hijack This (Be careful, not everything that appears is bad. A lot of it is crucial to your system)
CWShredder
The above suggestions for getting rid of Blaster
Start-Run-msconfig-boot menu to see if any nasty programs are starting on boot that you could kill.
A different browser will stop popups (from sites, I don't know if it will stop the popups you're getting). I know for a fact Opera has built in popup blocking which I have used for three years, and never had a single popup I didn't want, and I think firefox has native popup blocking.
Control Panel - Admin. Tools - Services. Disable Windows messanger and you can disable the RPC services there as well.
Goodluck!]

If you open an email with a subject like "hi", that is from someone you dont know(mabye even someone you do) is comiting computer suicide and you deserve all the damage done to your computer for being so reckless. especialy with all the anti microsoft people here you should have known how easy it is to ake a virus that infects upon opening an email.

Enable the built-in firewall for the time it takes you to patch up with the windows updates, afterwards you can disable it again

You have a router? If so this firewall isn't of any use to you. At all.

If you don't, go with ZoneAlarm. Best non-pay firewall I remember.

What makes you so sure that there are no viruses left on your computer?

And a so-called firewall like ZoneAlarm is as secure as putting a bannana in your ear to prevent being robbed.

The next time you have a fresh install of Windows activate the ICF and then plug the cable in. The ICF will do it's job for the time being.
After you got all security updates you can just stop all network-services you don't need with the script on this page.
If there are no services running, they can't be attacked.
No need for any "firewall".

Well, easiest way to fix it... format it again and make sure you got all the antivirus software etc set up before you even connect to the internet.

Well I need some of the networking services. But that's what routers are for.
But for what would you need a packet filtering software on a single machine? It is so much simpler just to run what you need (a firewall can't magically secure open services).
Packet filtering on a single machine is like building a safe with many doors and setting alarm triggers that are powered by one power source to every one of them.
The better and IMHO more logical way is: just don't have those doors!

Running a personal firewall just makes your computer more insecure because:
a) it gives you a false sense of security and
b) a firewall provides more code that can be attacked/spoofed.

Gee. I just LOVE how you assume you know what I spend my time doing on the computer.

I hate people like you. Really I do.

Yeah, I can do that on Windows, and I won't feel nearly as safe and protected as I would on a Mac. I grew up on a Mac. I have LOADS of games I can run on it. I can purchase games to run on it. Jesus. I didn't say that was a BAD thing. And buck--not if you use 3DSMax, most other rendering programs, freeware, play games, or generally do anything that normal users do.

You CAN'T do all that much with a mac. I mean there's so few things that I would be able to do with it...I'd find myself bored within mere moments. No winamp, no games...gah. I couldn't imagine not having winamp, at the very least. Once developers start making freeware for Macs, then I'll reconsider it. And don't give me a few instances and expect me to think that there's a lot of freeware. There's so much less than windows, it's not even funny.
