Lucasarts to make announcement tommorow

Shamelessly stolen from an SA thread
A couple of days ago, the LucasArts twitter "tweeted" about a new game that old school fans would love. Here are some of the relevant "tweets".

Quote:
Amazing news coming Monday! Super excited! You have no idea how tough it is not to start yelling about it! But it's secret! Until Monday!

Quote:
Okay, we will do hints. It is awesome news for our old school fans. (anything more direct might get me in trouble)

Quote:
It doesn't have to do with any specific intellectual property...
So what do you think it is? Signs point to a catalogue release on a digital distribution service.

That seems to fit best. Not sure if I would buy them all over again since I already own all the ones I care about.

Except maybe if they have enhancements, like the Monkey Island remake.

I was just thinking yesterday that it's time for a new Star Wars fps, however, I bet this has something to do with Monkey Island, Tentacle, etc. since they mentioned "old school".

They announced the two new Monkey Island projects a while ago. Is this more news about that, or just a particularly slow Lucasarts employee that's only just checked his e-mails?

Heh, I get a distinctly different page when I google exactly the same thing. I have my region set to Norway, and only one news story is actually in Norwegian (the top one). I'm not even sure what language that last one is in

It says "the first round" of releases, so hopefully we'll have some more exciting ones next time.

So are they going out of their way to make other games compatible? I want to see some Grim Fandango and old space sims.

How does it benefit Lucasarts to buy a copy off of ebay rather than just pirating it?
2009-07-06, 11:14 AM #30
because i don't answer every question with "i'll just pirate it" i may be satan but i do have some morals

That's fine for the adventure games - or, at least, people who never bought them when they first came out. But what about some other games?

X-Wing and TIE Fighter have aged very badly, have spotty performance in Dosbox and require a joystick and almost nobody has one anymore. If LEC re-releases the original games on Steam it'll be disastrous. They need real updates and modernization, and the XvT engine remakes just didn't cut it.

Games from the dawn of 3D acceleration don't work right on modern operating systems: X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Jedi Knight, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron.

I really hope their plans involve source code modifications.

It seems to sporadically run on XP for me. It might be dependent on video driver version numbers or some nonsense.

2009-07-06, 12:44 PM #35
If they can get their classic games (everything that made LucasArts awesome about 10 years ago) to me in a format that allows me to relive the magic I'm game for dropping plenty of pennies. If that involves them having to the alter the source code then i hope they have the balls to do it.

TIE and XvT work just fine on my XP rig, I think you can get them running under Vista and 7 but I'm not entirely sure.

It's kinda funny how LucasArts is one of the few companies that are championed to this day due to their back catalog of 10+ year old games rather than whatever direction they are going now.

I mean, anyone noticed LA's newest game, Indiana Jones: The Staff of Kings? Too bad it's... fairly lackluster.

It's because Lucasarts is full of stupid, stupid people.

Look at how much time and money they spent on their destructible environment technology. Look at how much they spent on their realistic animation technology. Just look. Look at the hype.

Then those retards release the games on consoles only, where they don't have the processing power to actually use any of it. Or a sharp enough picture for anybody to actually notice.

TFU and Staff of Kings are the biggest wastes of time, effort and hype since Fable 1 promised us real-time tree growth.

Cool, maybe with this there'll be some people actually playing the RC multiplayer.

:ninja:
nope.
