Speedrun (forum game)
2009-07-13, 5:07 AM #1
(Since my last forum game was something of a flop, I'm veering away from my one game idea, and from anything too "ISB-like" in favor of something closer to my first forum game...)

Speedrun [/u][/i][/FONT]

Objective: Be the first to make 50 posts.

How to Play:
Each player attempts to post 50 times before the other players -- think of each post as running 10 meters. No player is allowed to post twice or more times in a row. You are, however, able to use one explosive per post to try and make another player "lose a turn" or give yourself the ability to post twice in a row.

To use an explosive against another player, simply include in your post who you are targeting. Once placed, the target has 10 minutes to run (post again) before it explodes, resulting in the target "losing a turn" (the next post they make does not count towards their total).

To use an explosive on yourself, simply include in your post that you are using the explosive on yourself as the target. To use this, you must make your next post EXACTLY 10 minutes afterwards (within the rules) to receive the boost i.e. being able to post twice in a row once. If you post beforehand, you receive no benefit, and if you post after, the explosive hinders you. You may use this tactic on explosives set by other players as well. It's like using a rocket boost in a first-person shooter.

You are expected to post your progress with each post.

==============================

Q&A starts now. The race begins Tuesday at 8PM US EST sharp.

The rules are confusing. What is this 'running'? How does the explosion hinder them? How do they get out of it?
2009-07-13, 5:39 AM #3
Running is to posting as 1 mile is to 1 post.

The explosion hinders because you're throwing a freakin' explosive at them. If it hits, instead of having your next post add to your total distance, you "lose a turn" (or more depending on the level of the explosive).

They get out of the explosion either by posting before the 'x' number of minutes are up (or running at the last minute and gaining +'X' number of posts instead of losing the equivalent turns.)

Keep 'em coming.

So by posting on the X, it's a rocket/bomb jump?

When X equals the exact amount of time (ex. 10 min., 20 min., etc.), yes, that is exactly what happens.

Keep asking away, and post if the game interests you enough to want to play.

The time limit stuff will make this incredibly annoying to keep track of.
2009-07-13, 3:00 PM #7
It's increments of 10. You look at the time stamp of the post. Even I can do that math and I suck at math. The explosives are also optional, and are only designed to be used for those way in the back or against those way ahead.

But if nobody takes an interest in this game and gives it a chance, it'll be a moot point.

Forum games need to be less confusing and more entertaining. The MSPaint type threads were fun for everyone, not just those participating. Spectator sports are the way to go.
2009-07-13, 3:39 PM #9
If it's confusing, ASK QUESTIONS. I realize I don't write my rules the best the first time around, but I can't make it less confusing if I don't get feedback.

One of the more popular games I started, Cold War Capitalism, also had some of the most complex rules I've made for a game.

I also agree about 'spectator sports' but my last attempt at that, Gnommernymn -- which had very FEW rules to boot -- failed miserably.

By all means, if others on this board could start forum games as well and show me how making a good game is done, please do so. I find it very difficult to make any original game based solely on materials we all have (usually text only) that "isn't confusing" and "is fun to play and watch" and "doesn't have 'too many rules' to read" and so on myself.

I think this game will be fun if it's given a chance.

Higher level explosives should have more penalty for exploding on someone, otherwise someone will just use 6 level 1s in a row and have a greater chance of success (less time for the opponent to notice, great chance SOME will succeed).

That said, I target geb with a Level 1 Sticky Grenade!

[Edit: Oh wait we're not playing yet. :(]

2009-07-13, 5:17 PM #11
You're right, MZZT, but in consideration of the rules being "too confusing" I have changed them to essentially be only level 1 explosives for now. Perhaps in later games, I'll add the levels back in.

Glad you're taking an interest though. Any other questions?

Also, demoman picture for the win! If I wasn't concerned with discouraging people with "ISB-ness" -- or admittedly the pace of the game -- I'd encourage all the players to post story fluff of how their characters are in a FPS/foot-racing hybrid type world, similar to real FPS speedrun videos.

Slow and steady wins the race! :ninja:

I did make the fatal mistake of assuming this game would have at least 5 active players. I'm going to drag it out for as long as I can though - I'm still holding onto some foolish hope that more people will join.

Until then, I'll continue meditating.

I decide to take what is a small step for Geb, but a large step for gamerkind!

You know, there is one flaw in this game. Everyone can bombard one person with grenades at once and they'd never be able to score again.
