What would you do with $20,000?

No, it's really not.

My comment was aimed specifically at those people who wanted to start a business, and then live off it. You can't start a business for 20k.

$20k could just about cover the cost of living in London for a year if you didn't mind laying off the luxuries.

No it isn't, I survived the last year on under £5k, food, rent and bills.

You can live in London for a year on £11,965.00??
2009-08-01, 2:57 PM #49
Save it. Maybe use it for traveling in Europe, but other than that, probably save to pay off student loans

Rent would be approximately £6,000.
If you have to commute via tube, it's approximately another £1,000.
Let's put food/drink costs at about £50/week, so £2,600
The rest would be for bills and council tax and you'd have a little bit left over for luxuries like going out, buying dvds/cds/games and so on.

See: Detty's post. Maybe the cost of living in your area is ridiculously cheap (it is Scotland after all. Who would want to live there?) But my rent alone for the past year was ~$11,500. Factor in money for fuel, heating oil (typically at least another $1,500/year in my area for No. 2), electricity and any other utilities (some have public water/sewer), you have just enough left over for maybe a cellphone, the occasional splurge, and Christmas presents for your family.

I still wouldn't want to live in Scotland.

20k is not much under a years wages for me. Theoretically, I could survive a year with just 20k. I'm sorry JM, but you aren't taking into account that different places have different costs of living. In southern Indiana, I could buy up some farmland for under 10,000 dollars easily. And putting up a pole barn is cheap if you know the right people. 20k is more than enough to start up a wrestling promotion around here.
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

I lived in a small student flat, yearly rent was ~$6000, bills etc added in it probably came to the equivalent of about $9500. Not all housing is cheap, it's just illegally staying in a cheap as hell student flat that's cheap.
nope.

$ != £

And $20,000 isn't much if you're a grownup with responsibilities.

I don't really spend money much at all. I'd probably let it sit in the bank mostly. Maybe I'd travel a bit.

What's the point of having money if you don't spend it?

Yes, I converted it.

And whilst my figures aren't correct seeing as I was a little intoxicated, they still only come to a total of about $16000. The only real thing I'm exempt from with an all student flat is council tax.
nope.

You're right~! I should withdraw everything I have from the bank and burn it

So in JM's world nobody should have retirement funds? :P

I find it quite hard to spend large amounts of money, I trained myself to save money as a student and I like to hold onto it now. -_-
nope.

That's silly.

Money, by itself, is worthless. Your money in the bank is just a number. It's only worth what you can get for it.

Saving money for something is all well and good.

But saving money for the sake of saving money is just plain silly.

That's a terrible outlook. Don't listen to JM, he has no idea what he's talking about (as per the norm).

I don't PLAN on spending my saved money on medical bills, I don't PLAN on saving money so if I lose my job I won't starve, I don't PLAN on having to pay for a funeral for my 9 year old brother, but I MIGHT have to. Having money with no PLANNED purpose is one of the wisest things one can do.

I don't go through my life expecting horrible things to happen. When **** happens I deal with it. In the mean time, I enjoy myself.

Also I never said 'for emergencies' wasn't a perfectly valid reason to save money. Maybe it makes you feel good to have it. What I disagree with is the idea that you HAVE to save money; that saving money is, all by itself, a great thing.

See if you save money, then find a clean 1993 Toyota MR2 Turbo (great year) on Craigslist for a mere $2500 - needing only an alternator - you'd be able to buy it.

if you weren't a day late. like me.

buy stock or something and wait 10 years

I won't lie...I'd horde it, maybe use it intermittently. I have no debt and am able to pay all my bills on time, so I kind of rock. Well, despite that lack of job thing, but that's when all my money hording ways comes in handy! :D
