I'm the epitome of no accent. I'm serious, there is absolutely no accent to me, unless you consider middle-american an accent.

I think it must just be you; I know plenty of Scottish people who can't understand a strong Glaswegian accent.

(Fun fact about Scottish accents; the first 20 minutes of Trainspotting were redubbed for the American release so that American audiences could understand it)

Though the best accent is French.

No. You're confusing Great Britain and the United Kingdom.

Great Britain is the island. Being England, Scotland and Wales. It does however contain some of the islands.. e.g. the Hebridies which are a part of scotland.. but not the channel islands or the isle of man.

The United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern island. "United Kingdom" is a shortend version of "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" The isle of man and channel islands are not part of the UK either because they're both self governing. They are "British Crown Dependancies" iirc.

It's surprising the number of Brits that don't understand the meaning of the name "Great Britain".

I can mildly alter my accent depending on the situation. My normal voice is probably what you'd call "Home Counties", but sometimes it can make you sound like a smart-arse or posh, so I put on a more south Londoner accent. So sometimes while working at a newsagent serving plumbers, builders etc; "Good morning, here's your paper" becomes something like "awright mate, ere'y'are" [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]
I also go all South African when I'm pissed off. I guess I picked that up from my Dad.

Also, Wales isn't a country, it's a principality.

I don't think Scotland is a country either, considering they recognise Tony Blair as head of state, but they're more of a country than Wales are.

I thought all the countries in the UK/Britain (whichever one applies - I'm no too sure now!) recognised the Queen as head of state. That's why Scottish money is legal tender here and vice versa - it has her picture on it somwhere.

I may be wrong though! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

The UK is a pretty weird setup altogether:

Scotland, Wale, Northern Ireland and England are all seperate countries.

They share a head of state (The Monarch. Whose legitimacy is another issue...

They share a Government and Parliament (The UK Government/Parliament), based in Westminster, London (the Prime Minister of which is Tony Blair)

Scotland has it's own "regional" Pariliament and Government (headed by a "first minister", Jack McConnell) that can take limited decisions in most areas except foreign policy (since Britain acts as a single state in foreign issues), defence and a few others but I forget the exact details.

Wales and Northern Ireland have "regional" assemblies (like Parliaments, but with fewer powers).

Scotland has different legal and education systems to England (not sure about Wales and Northern Ireland, but I think they're the same as England).

There'll be loads of other things that I've forgotten/never knew, but that's the basics.
2004-08-24, 2:04 PM #61
Scotland's legal system is painfully archaic - my mum worked for a few months as a legal secretary to a Scottish law firm... the language is impenetrable!

But yeah, that stuff above is what I understood about the running of things!

Technically Tony blair isnt the head of state as we have our own parliment, so that makes us our own country. And i've yet to see a scottish note with the queen on it, coins do, but notes usually have edinburgh castle and either rabbie burns or that lord guy who was some famous scottish guy.

A good British accent (a dignified one, not the "TOP O' THA MORNIN' TO YE GUVNA" type). A good Russian accent on a woman kicks a lot of *** as well. Scottish can, too. I also enjoy a French accent on a woman, oddly.

Wrong! I used to think that too, but then I went to Germany. Obviously you think you have no accent, because everyone around you speaks that way too. I have the same accent, kind of that flat American accent. In Germany though, I asked people if they thought I had an accent and they said "Yes" and that it was "Very thick" It's all about relativity.
