PS3 Slim

I've considered buying one of these in the past. They even put S-Video on them, haha.

I know that Sony won't ever ever in a million years do this, but I think it'd be really cool if the PS3 came with a load of classic Playstation games preloaded, like Resident Evil 2 and Time Crisis. You'd know you're not just buying a console, you're buying something with history. The PS2 came with a demo disk and I played the **** out of that.

no... the lamps die eventually (like anywhere from 5-10 years at least) and are almost always user replaceable ($100-300 with most under $200) color wheels can break and sometimes are user replaceable (no idea as to the cost of a color wheel) and if you break the lens you're screwed even with a warranty

Seeing as this seems like the thread to ask, now that the old monolith is the same price as the slim, which model would you go for?

This is taking everything into account, including aesthetics. :P
nope.

BTW, the Slim can't run Linux. Just FYI.

well the slim doesn't fix the problems i have with the way the PS3 is designed and makes it uglier IMO

I am strongly considering doing some yard sale hopping this weekend. I want to pick up a PS2, God Of War 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, and Shadow of the Colossus.

If you haven't already, pick up Enter the Matrix. There's a fighting minigame in it that is AWESOME (though a little buggy). My flatmates and I had some epic battles in that, played that more than the actual game.

I rented it once (haha, remember renting games and movies from the video store?). Despite the flaws, it was actually a pretty fun game. If I can get a PS2, I'll probably pick it up.

I'd love to get the second disc of Subsistence. ****ing Konamia leaving it out of the MGS 1-3 pack they sold. Although it's also part of my dumbassery for not buying it.
I had a blog. It sucked.

I don't know if any of you read it (and for the life of me I can't find it since I read this morning at work.) but the slim ps3 contains a 'cheaper' disc drive... the fact that it was mentioned leads me to wonder if future failures are in order....

No PS2 support = No Sale to me.

Ticks me off that they removed the hardware for PS2 support, but it's obviously never coming back.

Linux support is no big loss, as they completely nerfed it by cutting out any GPU functionality from the system.

Well they couldn't have people making actual games or software for the ps3, now could they? 99% of the time when something supports open source software the company is just trying to get other people to do work for free.

Theres been rumours of some patent Sony have filed for some new software that can emulate PS2 games using the existing cell processor, so I guess that could be added through an update?
nope.

If that's the slim, I'd hate to see the fat. What in the hell do they have in those ****ers?
? :)

looks like they are adding one feature the normal PS3 can't do

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3301

the slim is getting a different HDMI chip that can bitstream Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD

no actual difference in sound quality between bitstreaming and decoding on the player (and ouputting as PCM) but people with receivers that can decode those formats will get to see the indicator lights for those formats light up with the slim

the only real advantage here is it would mean discs with regular DTS and dolby digital tracks (both DVD and bluray) will not need you to switch audio settings from PCM to bitstream in the event of a track that isn't plain stereo or 5.1ch

examples
using PCM output mono tracks get sent as stereo instead of proper mono (which should be played from the center channel speaker) dolby surround tracks carry flags that tell the receiver to use it's pro logic mode that are lost when decoded on the player and you have to manually activate pro logic mode on the receiver (no big deal but mildly annoying)
6.1ch tracks get sent as 5.1ch... you have to change the audio mode to bitstream to actually get 6.1ch

they could still add an "auto" mode to the fat PS3 that automatically selects bitstreaming for regular DD and DTS and PCM for everything else but it seems such conveniences to the customer are too hard for sony to think about

It's because of the POWER OF THE CELL

Considering Sony has such difficulties selecting appropriate hardware components for their consumer electronic devices I don't think it's very fair to expect the software components to function correctly.
