my vote is woman

however, if she does turnout to be a man, i think it would only be fair that the runner up winner would undergo the same sex testing that semenya is going to go through

couldn't they just take an xray an check out her pelvis to see if shes a woman or not? i mean archaeologists do it all the time
i dont understand the need of all those other doctors

if they are going to allow the question of gender to even be brought up, they should just make gender verification standard BEFORE an athlete can enter an event like this.

Gender is not decided by what you have in your pants but what is in your head. There's a difference between being a transvestite and a transsexual. Now we're talking semantics...

eh  i would actually argue that gender is decided by your chromosomes as in XX or XY...

That's called "sex" most of the time. Gender is a social construct related to it.

Even sex can be iffy, though, as a few physiological women have a defective y chromosome.

No, your sex is determined by biological and physiological characteristics. So are we questioning his/her sex or gender?

My personal philosophy:

If you can't tell, then it's a man. It makes things safer and less confusing to look at it this way.

That's fine if you're looking for a date, but when it comes to denying an athlete the right to compete, looks are not a fair standard. If her family's tales of a lifetime of teasing about her looks are true, this allegation is the icing on the depressing cake.

I thought it was just a poll, I didn't actually read the article (or even see it was there)

hopefully sex. because if they are going to permit athletes to compete based on which gender they identify with there's going to quickly be some problems.

official: i am sorry gunther but you cannot compete in woman's freestyle weight lifting.
Gunther: but why not? i am a lady?
official: gunther... i can clearly see your ron johnson dangling out of your shorts.
Gunther: but... im a lady.

Not for athletic competition. Biological gender is used.

Yes, I too get a little frustrated when 'gender' is used as a more polite term for 'sex', even when they don't mean the same thing. Gender refers to masculine/feminine while sex refers to male/female, and it's perfectly possible and natural to have any combination of sex and gender (irrespective of sexuality). I think it's a frustration we both need to overcome, there's no pleasure in pedantry, especially as every single ****ing form you ever need to fill in uses 'gender' instead of 'sex' (possibly in fear of some wiseass drawing a third box, writing 'yes please' and ticking that instead). The distinction is important in sociology and anthropology, where that ambiguity must be avoided.
