Man or Woman

If it's a man, he sure looks like a lady.

But.

It's a lady who looks like a man. No man would try this unless he looked even more feminine : He would know that if there was any question, he'd get tested. So if it's competing in a woman's sport and is ambiguous, it is either A) A woman or B) Stupid.

someone could always try getting her pregnant, that's a pretty good test.

Gender refers to masculine/feminine while sex refers to male/female, and it's perfectly possible and natural to have any combination of sex and gender (irrespective of sexuality). I think it's a frustration we both need to overcome, there's no pleasure in pedantry, especially as every single ****ing form you ever need to fill in uses 'gender' instead of 'sex' (possibly in fear of some wiseass drawing a third box, writing 'yes please' and ticking that instead). The distinction is important in sociology and anthropology, where that ambiguity must be avoided.

blah blah blah it's just gays and weirdos drawing attention to themselves again. there should be no distinction between gender and sex if the person is normal. if sex and gender don't agree, the person is ABnormal and should be shunned for freaking everyone out and putting dicks in peoples butts.

Some people are born with both sets of genitalia, usually one variant is more pronounced than the other. Sometimes the genitalia that is most visible (or even visible at all, since in some cases the other variant will be hidden away) isn't the same as the sex that the person has a bias towards as they grow up.

So you can have someone growing up as a girl due to having a more visible vagina, you wouldn't notice anything is amiss until they hit puberty and started biasing towards male traits. At this point people might choose to switch gender to match their physical characteristics, but ultimately the choice of 'gender' is down to the individual. However, if the person chooses to stay as a girl, they would still gain the physical advantages of their masculine traits even if they're legally and medically female.

Birth certificate says female.

But without her original long-form birth certificate, we may never know if she is truly from South Africa.

They actually began the testing as soon as she qualified for the World Championships this year. It just so happens that this particular series of tests takes a long time for the results to come back. The IAAF had to take the "innocent until proven guilty" approach and let her compete. They will most definitely strip Semenya of the medal if the results come back that she was born a man.

If you ask me, I think she was probably born XXY. That is technically still female but she would probably be stripped of her medal because of an unfair genetic advantage over the rest of the field.
yay for not posting much ever

The IAAF stresses that it does not suspect her of deliberately cheating but questions whether she may have a rare medical condition which gives her an unfair advantage.

IAAF officials have said Ms Semenya would not necessarily have her medal withdrawn if she "failed" the tests.
We'll see, I guess.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

As a regular Deadspin reader, I can tell you that you're actually several days behind the curve on this one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XXY

XXY people are male, though they are infertile and often have small genitalia and a rounded body type. Many also have some amount of mental retardation.

The whole situation is food for thought, though, because there's a great deal of genetics involved in athleticism. Body type is a significant factor of course, but there are also other things that give certain athletes an advantage. For instance, Michael Phelps has some condition where his muscles produce much less lactic acid than normal people. Where is the line between fair and unfair genetic advantages?

I hate people you cant tell are male or female. though "she" does look female.
Once when I was in High School, I went to the opposing teams football game (since I hated my HS). Two guys came up to me (I later found out one of the guys was the other guys girl friend) and said "You look like the type of person who would like to steal something" and I went to steal some **** with them. Long story short, they got busted, I didn't. But the police report mentioned something about a guy and his women getting caught stealing with unknown accomplices. When I read the report I almost **** myself because I, A .. was so shocked she was a chick, and B they didn't rat me out.
