Myopia sucks

I got my new prescription contacts today. My number went up to -4.5 in my left eye and -3.75 in my right eye.

How many of you nerds have myopia as well?

Any suggestions/links to articles on ways to reduce myopia would be helpful.

Your only choices are corrective lenses or refractive surgery. If it makes you feel any better, my eyes are at -12.0. Thank God for contact lenses.

Wow. I can't see **** without my contacts. Can't imagine what -12.0 feels like.

Oh God. There's a conspiracy theory about it.

:carl:

http://www.myopia.org/

(Incidentally, if what they said was true, then if you never went and got glasses your vision would stop getting worse, which there is evidence to contradict; your vision would never stop getting worse (Most nearsighted people 'stabalize' - and in fact, you have to, to get laser surgery.) Oh, right, and after getting laser surgery... your vision would deteriorate again, and in most cases, it doesn't - because. Well. Nearsightedness isn't caused by eyestrain.)

And I thought my about -7 to -9 was bad (though my sister is in the double digits too).

My left eye has astigmatism which is now being corrected by glasses. My right eye is utterly screwed, it can't focus to any distance and lenses can't help it. I have a hospital appointment for that.

I have 20/15 vision. Yay for perfect eyesight.

(And I'm damn lucky too, almost my entire family has various eye issues)

I can never remember what I've got, although judging by this thread I'm hyperopic, sicne my proscription's about +6.75, +5.75 or something.

Not that I can see at any distance sans glasses...

I've also got myelinated optic nerves. Yay me.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Im -3.00 / -3.00 , and wear glasses.

The only time I really hated it recently is when I lost my glasses in the ocean on vacation. Atleast now im strongly considering lasik.

I don't know what my prescription is but I'm going to get contacts shortly so I can play paintball w/out having my glasses crunched under the mask. Glasses don't normally bother me, but any sports where I have to wear goggles/mask/helmet is annoying. For example, paintball, snowboarding, ATV, etc.

I used to have perfect vision :(

Not sure what my prescription is either, but I know that the floor is somewhat blurred, and that's enough for me.

Not really sure what to think of the conspiracy, but it could be plausible, not really sure. Reason I say this is because my aunt had glasses when she was younger. She was nearsighted, couldn't see more than a few meters away. But she never wore them.

The next time she put them on (a lengthy time later), they hurt her eyes and blurred everything. Turns out, she didn't need them anymore - and she still doesn't need them. :)

I've never had an eye test but I'm 99% sure I have perfect vision.
2009-08-23, 1:47 PM #17
You should get your eyes checked, if not only for disease but also because chances are your vision is not perfect. When you get your first pair of lenses it may blow your mind what you've been missing :P

I'm -2.75 in both eyes and it really sucks. I hate wearing glasses, and I absolutely cannot stand wearing them during any kind of physical activity.

I wear contacts for most of the day, every day, but they can be extremely annoying. I sometimes get drunk and fall asleep with them in, and you can't open your eyes underwater with the contacts on. If your eyes get dried out for any reason (heavy drinking, smoking, climate etc) the lenses get uncomfortable.

I'll look into laser surgery once I'm sure that I'm fully grown and maybe once it gets a little bit more safe. Probably in about 8 years or so.
2009-08-23, 1:47 PM #18
well I'm sure I was tested as a child... and at the dmv...
2009-08-23, 1:50 PM #19
I'm myopic, but my prescription is extremely small. I'm well within the margins for driving without glasses, but I normally choose to anyway.

Being historically myopic is a much bigger problem.
2009-08-23, 1:51 PM #20
-5.75 and -6.00. I need lasik.

The level of vision required for driving is well below the level at which you should start using lenses. And eyesight can deterioriate very rapidly without you really being aware of it. The reason I didn't notice my right eye deteriorating rapidly was because my left eye was picking up the slack, it was only when my left eye became slightly astigmatic that I started having difficulty seeing.

Plausible the eye strain could cause myopia? Sure.

Plausible that there is a vast conspiracy of optometrists hiding this fact from the public? No.

On the other hand : If myopia was caused by what the conspiracy claims it is, wouldn't it make sense then that focusing more on distant objects would correct your vision? I do not think this works.
2009-08-23, 3:15 PM #23
I also have to discredit them because... well.

This is their example of when the vision is bad.

And this is it corrected. Yeah. That's not even close to accurate.

The eye does not focus light onto a point at the back of the retina. It projects it onto the retina. As in, the whole retina. And my glasses sure aren't shaped like that.

2009-08-23, 6:33 PM #26
America? You mean that country where you can get an eye test at walmart for $25?
2009-08-23, 6:41 PM #27
Yup. The country where I can't find a job and my unemployment doesn't cover my bills.

Same here. I could get glasses for distance but I can't afford the $200 for them.

And JLee, I don't exactly have the means or the money to go anywhere else. Trying to find a job in Phoenix is hell, so STFU.

heh well it's not really as bad as all that, Vin.

To be honest, I know several people that are gay (though they're all girls, go figure) in the Navy. And it's fairly common knowledge and no one cares as long as they don't go around flaunting it or making a big deal about it. (or get caught doing stuff where they're not supposed to)
