I think the disrespecting girls, selling drugs were a part of the 80's.. instead of large wheels it was large hair

On that point I agree. BUT now your walking the point back to my initial argument in this thread. That barrier only exists because it has been created and perpetuated through black american society. That attitude in general is a bunch of bull****. See page 1.

I disagree. I think it's 'perpetuated' cause it sells. People want money, so they keep making songs about it.

You'd like to believe that, wouldn't you?

Okay, I will go back to page 1.

Quote:
Look at italians and jews [ed: and irish, who were once considered to be of lower social standing than black people], they were once held in the same disregard as blacks claim to be presently. Rather then wallowing in their own poverty and creating a lifestyle around it, they bettered themselves as a whole and are now prospering because of it.
Fantastic.

The root of the problem is that you are examining the issue from the perspective that there are no cultures other than your own. You're using examples of Western European Caucasian immigrants abandoning their cultural identity as a success story to justify your opinion that black people should assimilate (ignorant of all of the factors that are preventing them from, you know, becoming white) and listen to nothing but the contemporary pop and indie folk music that's popular among you and everybody else who thinks a cardigan is appropriate daytime attire.

So a rich rapper (such as Jay-Z) is not bettering his lifestyle? Becoming successful in the industry is not enough? They need to assimilate to your view of the world?

Because mass marketing everything I just listed is such a GOOD THING for everyone right? Lets all argue for these things because they are so incredibly wonderful and marvelous for our kids!

Please

Who said its "my world view"? That is how you construe it. Why should being broke, selling drugs, pimping women, spending any money I make doing these activities on material bull****, talking about it in a song, and continuing the cycle because the big bad white man is holding me down, -- be an acceptable view? If you support that your a goddamned idiot.

And tempermental, I never said it was "all of society's problems". I said it was destructive to society. Big difference. Again, you justifying the subject content in most rap is really ridiculous.

How about you counter with a real point instead of sarcasm. Every time you post you just confirm that you're a sheltered kid from Rochester. It's not just rap that sells using drugs/sex/whatever as a theme.

Never said it was just rap. BUT it IS rap that:
-is one of the largest and most popular genres in the music industry, and has been for several years.
-is the most played on the radio
-is most played on MTV which is viewed by millions of people every day
-is most heavily marketed in any music store you enter besides hot topic
-is most heavily marketed on social networking websites (facebook aside)
-is the most blatent, in your face, pulling no punches, blunt, biggest offending form of this "drugs/sex/whatever" theme.

If you cannot see these things you are really blind.

If I was some sheltered kid from Rochester I'd be going "woo00o guyz dis lil wayne mixtape is da **** fo real tho". Just because someone has a more straightforward conservative point of view then yourself does not by any stretch of the imagination make them "sheltered".

Are you basically telling me that you support the distribution of this garbage and think it somehow benefits society as a whole? Are you actually sitting there defending the idiocy in these songs that plays through the radio every day? Seriously? Your trying to argue for it, like "booty dew" is somehow an awesome new, intelligent catchphrase that no one should speak up against. If so theres really nothing I can do for you. -- and thats not just directed at mb, but to anyone who has been having a pissing contest with me on this subject.

I think you're confusing Rap with Hip Hop. Last time I walked into a CD selling store I didn't see a single 50 cent or Eminem poster. There were black eyed peas and hannah montana posters all over however. I'd take apart the rest of your claims but I don't feel like wasting some time at this moment. Perhaps later when you've said some more things that aren't correct.

Nope, ive met/lived with people from Rochester that have similar opinions as you.

No, I'm trying to figure out what you're saying. I'm also trying to point out that Rap isnt the only offender of this.

You do this far too much. You're assuming you know what point I'm trying to argue. It's not just rap that promotes these 'ideas.'

No, being from Rochester makes you a racist from Rochester.

All people have subconscious biases that are largely aligned with those of the society around them. The only difference, it seems, between a racist from Rochester and a racist from Alabama is the fact that the racist from Alabama would supposedly be more honest about his opinions.

Nice dig at Alabama, by the way.

Here's the top 10 songs inspired by heroin (listed by sales, I think). Guess what? Not a single one is a rap song. Oh and top 10 songs inspired by cocaine (that complete list would be really long). Any rap there? No..

Drugs have had an incredibly profound effect on all music in history, and is certainly not confined to any one genre. Even if an artist doesn't himself use drugs, he's probably inspired by someone that does.

No, I'm saying this because I know what the Rochester area is like and I know people with views similar to yours. I agree that some rap perpetuates stereotypes, but I don't think its fair to say rap is the #1 cause for degenerates in society. 20 years ago you wouldn't find someone pretending to be "hood" because people were living in dangerous slums.

Anyway, maybe racist is the word that fits the best. Ignorant works well though. I'm not going to deny that Rochester is a dangerous place, I know first hand that it is! But whatever, I'm wrong no matter what i say :p

Oni think the issue here is that you're saying Rap is crap because you don't really like or enjoy it. To me, country music is horrid but that doesn't mean the artists behind it, making millions of dollars and going further in life than I have (And you yourself, including the rappers who are doing far better than you are), have no talent or are ruining the industry. People know what they want and buy what suits their tastes, black ghetto kids aren't the only ones listening to and buying rap music. If that were the case it wouldn't be as well selling as it is. White rich people buy it too. If everyone stopped buying the music that centralized around violence drugs and sex the subject matter would change or shift to a different topic, in order to sell the demand.

You don't hear people who are into anal porn talking smack about the people that like bukkake porn. It all suits your taste and what you like, you don't have to agree with it but you're a moron if you're telling us it degrades society. People are inherently retarded and the music or movies they watch or listen to, or video games they play have no influence on their behavior. If it does, their parents and guardians have failed, not the industry. If not that it's the retarded people that can't figure out what is right and obviously wrong.

You need to move out of the unicorn wandering wonderland you seem to live in and take a step on the other side of the tracks.

i think it is a little naive to say that rap is the biggest offender in "offensive" music. just go listen to the murderdolls. honestly there has been just as much peddling of drugs and sex in rock music as in rap. and probably far more violence in punk than rap.

there is also a decidedly large difference between that "average" rap and hip-hop fan and gang bangers and "thugs"

dont get me wrong i think most rap is garbage, and i find rapping about how rich you are and how much you like to rap to be redundant at best. however, saying rap is responsible for kids who turn out poorly is as ridiculous as blaming video games for kids who are violent.

Forgive me. I was responding to his claim that all you see is advertising and marketing for rappers of the sort he was talking about, while in reality you often see artists from Hip Hop or other genres, i.e the Black EYed Peas and Hannah Montana. I haven't seen an advertisement for 50 cent in forever and Eminem's new album was hardly marketed. Even Nas's new album got only a small blurb on a poster that was dominated by Britney Spears.

Oh I guess you're done with the thread, Oni, but I was sort of going to agree with you. I think a lot of the music (not just rap) pedaled by MTV and the radio has a negative effect on our society - especially our youth. However, I feel that freedom of speech is a more important issue... but more should be done to get artists/labels/producers to be more socially conscious in their work.

This is an entirely different claim from the statement that "rap (as a genre) is garbage." It's the same difference between saying that "I think Obama has made some questionable decisions while in office" and saying that "Black people will never make good presidents!!!" So, no, I don't think you're agreeing with Onimusha at all.
2009-08-30, 9:06 AM #154
Well I said "sort of" agree. I'm all for minorities celebrating their culture and I support affirmative action to some extent. I was just agreeing that a lot of popular rap music has a bad influence. *shrug*
2009-08-30, 9:35 AM #155
Sure, but the inability to distinguish between "these specific exemplars of category X are bad in some way" and "this makes membership in category X inherently bad" is one of the main bases of racism.

That there are many individual rap songs that promote violence, misogyny, and other problematic behaviors, I agree with you and Onimusha. However, Onimusha moves from there to saying that "therefore rap (as a genre) is garbage," which is flawed (if unfortunately very common) logic. That logic wouldn't hold even if every single rap song you've heard so far had those problems.
