a couple video game questions
2009-09-14, 8:33 PM #1
Vague title, I know.

1) I just got myself a Dreamcast. Yay! Got myself Virtual Fighter 3tb and Soul Calibur. What other games did you all like on the Dreamcast and would recommend?

2) I got myself a NES U-Force (if you don't know what I'm talking about, the Angry Video Game Nerd reviewed it under his NES accessories). Problem is, I don't have an instruction book for it, so I'm kind of lost on which settings I need the dipswitches to play certain games. From watching the AVGN video (which surprisingly is the best source for instruction I could find online), I can get the proper set-up for Super Mario Bros., Punch-Out (which is actually mildly entertaining though I suck) and partially for Top-Gun (though I don't know if it's crappy control or that the dip switches should be elsewhere).

Point is, does anyone know where I can find clear instructions for this thing? I haven't had any luck. Or, if you actually HAVE this thing, can you scan your own instructions for me or something?

MDK2 was a great game. Sci-Fi/Third PersonShooter/action/weird comedy. Got great reviews.

Jet Grind Radio was supposed to be great, never played it.

Jim7: Crazy Taxi is good stuff. Even the not-so-good cellphone versions I tested.

Ford: That seems like an odd suggestion for a Dreamcast game. o_O

Kirby: While very enlightening, it would appear to only partially give me an idea what one of the four dip switches does.

Baco: I heard that was a good game.

Roger Spruce: tags are stupid.

Vegar: I'll look into MDK too.

I'm surprised no one has suggested PowerStone 1 or 2 yet. That's the first one I would have expected.

Actually, the Quake III port to the Dreamcast was one of the best shooters ever for a console to faithfully reproduce what PC's can do, especially since you can get a keyboard and mouse for it. I imagine Unreal Tournament was also good. Since you can probably find them for very cheap, it's worth it for the novelty.

I also recommend MDK and MDK II. I played the first on the PC and the second on the Dreamcast. MDK II, at least, played very well on a console.

Soul Caliber is also necessary. It somehow manages to look better than not only the PS2 version but also most of the newer Soul Caliber games on all the consoles... They ruined a lot of the art in the new ones.

i think all the FPSs on DC support the keyboard and mouse...

i know Q3, Rogue Spear, and HL do

But what about FPS's on the regular Dreamcast controller? How does that work?

The same way they worked before most controllers had dual thumbsticks, and Q3 for the dreamcast is actually a very, very good port from what I remember.

Also +1 to Landfish.
nope.

*shrug* dreamcast version was the only version of the original UT that i played and it was very fun.

PowerStone: is that the game where you shoot colored marbles at other colored marbles to make them disappear?

if so, yeah its fun, but unless you're intoxicated it doesnt hold your attention very long. (at least not mine.)

I had a U-Force when I was a kid... Good god, that thing was useless.
2009-09-15, 1:46 PM #16
I also have a Dreamcast Gebohq, I suggest:

Sonic Adventure 1 & 2,
Grandia II (RPG)
MDK II (Awesome singleplayer adventure/shooter/puzzle)
Fur Fighters (Fun and quirky 1st/3rd person shooter, really shines in multiplayer)
Shenmue
Jet Grind Radio (really fun, and quirky!)
2009-09-15, 2:13 PM #17
Unless the FPSes are split-screen and/or LAN-capable, I'd imagine they'd be pretty useless multiplayer-wise, which would make UT and Q3 especially useless, no? I've played Fur Fighters though -- fun stuff.

A Sonic game for a Sega system does seem to be something I should have...

And Ford: PowerStone. I think you might have been thinking of Bust-A-Move.

And yes, the U-Force is pretty junk, though it's mildly amusing for Punch-Out.

POWERSTONE!!
Holy crap I forgot all about that.
I think I semi-agree with kirby, but it's been even longer since I played SSB than Powerstone.

But yea, as people have said:

Crazy Taxi
I didn't know MDK was out for DC, but I LOVED the PC games.
Whats the one with the powerboats? That was fun.

And Emon - Glad I'm not the only one that thinks that! People used to rave about the PS2 graphics and I would be like (since I didn't own a PS2, just DC) SOULCALIBUR, *****ES!!"
2009-09-15, 4:18 PM #20
The one with the powerboats is Hydro Thunder, which is also pretty sweet.

MDK 1 was PC only I believe, it was definately not on dreamcast.

MDK 2 (MKD2) was on Dreamcast and PS2 much later.

One of my friends who had a dreamcast swore by Phantasy Star Online for it... he use to play it for hours.

I never had a Dreamcast. I gave up on Sega consoles once the Saturn flopped.

Power Stone II is good. if you like JRPGs you'd probably like Skies of Arcadia. Rez, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Soul Reaver. There's probably more, but that's all I remember playing.

If I got Rez, I think I'd have to find myself a Trace Vibrator and a lady friend who wants to enjoy the game with me. :ninja:

that's only for the PS2 version of the game though

but +1 on soul reaver if you don't have it on any other system...

also THPS1 on the DC is the best looking version of the game... THPS2 on DC is the second best looking version of that one (right behind the xbox version)

THPS2 on DC is the BAWMBBB

Grandia II was excellent and needs more mentions.

I also have Air Force Delta (boring fighter jet game), Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 (they were actually rather good in hindsight), NFL2k (Best NFL game of all time), Shenmue, Sega Smash Pack,

Oh right, my bad.

And what's THPS?

EDIT: nevermind, I figured it was Tony Hawk Pro Skater.
