Good, get rid of half that crap you dont really use.

Like, Why have Microsoft Office AND OpenOffice installed?
Why have Adobe Reader 9 AND Foxit Reader installed?

Don't bother. You'll still have to reinstall everything. All it really does is copy your user folder and a few settings like wallpaper.

I used it when I did RC to RTM and it kept like all my program settings after I reinstalled the programs (e.g. Firefox addons, bookmarks, game settings, etc)

Also all my files, folder structure like you mentioned, etc.

Because I had OpenOffice before I bought Office for school.

Because...I dunno. :P

Funny. I looked at that picture and it seemed like a reason to like reformatting to me.

I do love a fresh system, but it just tends to accumulate junk over time. :P

***. I hate having too much crap on my PC

I really should get around to putting all my 'needed' programs in one folder, so I can install everything at once and be done with it. I tend to forget stuff and have to install it when I figure out that I can't do something. :P

I used to keep a partition with all my "needed" programs and music and stuff. Wipe the C:\ drive, then use D:\ to get back up and running :)

Having Adobe Acrobat and Foxit PDF Editor installed isn't that strange. Each does some things better than the other. But since we're talking about the Reader versions...

That's because all of your said Firefox stuff, and the game settings, were stored in your user folder. Like I said, all it does is copy your user folder and a few random settings like wallpaper. You still have to reinstall the applications.

I reorganize my start menu by hand, I don't leave very many base menu folders. I'll copy the executable .lnks to something like the 'Internet' folder, 'Security', 'Games', etc.

I can't remember the last time I ever used the start menu for anything beyond the initial "recent" list. Especially with searching.
2009-09-29, 7:34 AM #24
Yeah, even at work I've installed a Quicksilver-like app (linky). I used to have "higher" folders like "internet" "games" and stuff though.
2009-09-29, 7:34 AM #25
I don't have Search or a Recent list, but for the programs I use the most I have keyboard shortcuts or command line aliases.

I have an address toolbar in my windows bar, it does everything the run bar does as well as letting me run things from the desktop quickly and easily (usually I only type the first two letters of the program I want and push up)

Win => excel

WIN!

Yay for searching on the start menu.

I find the start menu to be very inefficient, even WITH searching, unless you constantly upkeep it.
Especially since they put all the extra shortcuts like uninstalling etc in the start menu options.

Pfft, I can get by with just Windows Key => exc (just e or just ex brings up IE, Windows Explorer, and Expression Blend before Excel).

I also have both installed. OO is my primary, but every now and then I need graphing features that aren't 100% compatible.

Excel is installed for graphing features that Calc doesn't have, and Word is installed to double-check formatting settings that Writer doesn't convert to .doc correctly.

What? Mine never returns anything except the actual programs, with the files and such below it. Uninstall shortcuts don't even appear.

What features about OpenOffice make it your primary choice?

I use OpenOffice, but my usage is like once every 6 months I'll use the spell checker, view an a document in an Office format, or require creating a text document with slightly more advanced features than notepad offers (ie embed an Image, ect).

Basically I do so little 'Office' work that it doesnt make sense to pay for a suite when OpenOffice handles everything I do.

I'm curious about what people doing 'real Office' work think.

People who do "real Office" work don't know what OpenOffice is.

But the rest of us that use Office do so because it's feature set easily eclipses OpenOffice's.

The automatic 'works cited' feature in Word 2007 is epic.

The ribbon alone makes it better than OO, and just the vast amount of features in it is great.

At last! Someone other than me likes the ribbon. All I hear about it anywhere is hate but the 10 menus with cascading submenus and 20 toolbars in Office 2003 were better?
