I'll admit it:

Gold threads are one of the main reasons I keep coming here.

It used to be cooler when lots of people lost their nerve and got banned in his threads, instead of himself.

I don't know if I support such an immediate ban, but the reasoning is spot on. SF_GoldG_1 is not a travel agent, and his attempt seems underhanded and in the least a way to make money. His primary goal is income and his "suckers" were massassi, even if he had no intentions of scamming us.

I'm sure the spam bots are actually selling exercise equipment. Why don't you get upset when they get banned?

I'm torn. I can definitely see why we wouldn't want to open up Massassi to moneymaking enterprises (as distinguished from the garage-sale type selling of old games and computer parts, which isn't really a problem). On the other hand... eh, I can't actually be bothered to make the same counterargument that a bunch of people have already made.

Gold is a tool. As much as his consistent bull**** was amusing, I'm definitely on CM's side of no scamming. If it were a "minor" member, someone who has a post count of 50 or so, no-one would give a flying ****. It'd be "****ing scammer - good riddance".

I will miss his threads, and calling him an idiot, but he crossed a line. That said, **** it, it's an internet site - he's not been castrated or anything.

Martyn's correct, a lesser known member probably would have been banned out of hand, however the amusing part of it (and the part in his favour) is that Gold had spent the past few years destroying (or building..) his reputation with a succession of hair-brained schemes, essentially to the point where I don't believe anyone would invest capital in whatever his latest grandiose plan happened to be.

On the plus side at least we can have a discussion about bannings without admins taking it as a threat to their authority and telling us the subject is final, closing threads etc. Although banning Gold is less like losing a member, and more like losing a tv channel.

One of CMs greatest attributes is the fact that he can take being argued against, and not get all banhammery. I have a lot of respect for him in that.
