first i'd try going to a different version of windows, and then getting knoppix if you want to go the linux way as a starting off point

The best windows OS in my opinion is Win98 SE. Dunno why, but XP is buggy (Because it's an OS and not a GUI of DOS), ME sucked, 98 was pretty buggy, and 95 is dated. 98SE is my favorite... Yeah.

Agreed.

If you're just fed up with WINDOWS, you've got basically one choice--Linux.

We break that down into how do you want it fed to you:

*Easy package management, a bit more advanaced
*Easy package management, really advanced
*Hard package management, newb-friendly

Basically, I suggest Knoppix, the LiveCD install of Debian. But first, read up on it. After you've learned as much as possible on it, install, and rejoice until you feel like playing a game. Then go through hours of crap just to get them working [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Also, if you have an ATi card, just forget about it.

Evilness....

<3 Win2k.

Of course, I've wanted to bash it bloody brains out roughly 16 times today. My day was quite bad. So Windows is quite stupid. But I take 2k over anything else. It seems to be the least stupid of everyone.

Bull****. I never had trouble getting my 9600XT working in Linux. Under two different distros, and three different kernels.

If you want to just try Linux out, Knoppix is probably worth looking at.

You can't really deny that ATI has had trouble with Linix drivers. They're getting better, but they've had problems

GBK--when's the last time you USED windows drivers? Seriously. The only thing they've done wrong is the 4.8 Cats, and that's one version.

Windows ATi drivers > nVidia Windows Drivers

Also, Mad Cow, you're one lucky bastage. Seriously. Everyone has trouble with ATi drivers for Linux.

Delphian, your choice is either Windows or Linux for the PC. It's very disappointing. However, if you have the cash and are willing to spend it. Give Mac OS 10.3.5 a try. I know I'm going to be shot for saying that.

What exactly problems are you having?

XP i've found to be an incredibly stable kernel, especially compared to any version of 9x.

ATI MAKES MORE THAN GRAPHICS CARDS. Most of my hatred for ATI stems from their TV Wonder series, where their drivers have a 70 percent failure rate. What have they done to fix it? NOTHING.

Okay, they make a bad line of TV tuners, or at least they DID back a long time ago, and so you hate them for it? People I know that have used the TV wonders have done fine. Also, note that they're not KNOWN for their TV Tuners.

The impossible has happened--- my linuix is all f***ed up. I booted into it, and the text on everything was unreadably small (like 2 or 3 pt.) Since i can't read it, I can't re-enlarge the text.

I'm going to format the linux drive and turn it back into a document drive for windows. I have a bootloader set up, but with only windows installed, there is really no point to having a bootloader.

How do i remove the bootloader?

1. ) Mandrake 10

2) not sure what that means, but my bootloader is Lilo 22.x.x

3. It's the generic text that is underneath the icons and pretty much everywhere else. Utterly unreadable.

At this rate, that linux install is doomed when I get home tonight from uni...

Assuming your using KDE, thats a simple setting. K-Menu -> [settings] -> Control Center -> Appearance and Themes -> Fonts

That will give you a dialog to change KDE's font settings. Click on "Adjust all fonts" and increase the font size. Hit apply, and restart KDE. (log out, log back in)

It's basically knoppix, only better. It is also better suited to HD-installs.

Aside from the driver issue, <3 kanotix.
