Gentoo > *.

emerge ati-drivers. Edit xorg.conf or run the ATI config utility. (I did the xorg.conf, since I didn't want to redo the entire file, but either way works.) Reboot. Run glxgears to bask in the glory that is high-speed 3d acceleration. Of course, this is assuming you have your motherboard's AGP slot configured correctly, which is not ATI's problem.

TV Tuners: They're good for what they are, cheap TV. I've yet to see one in a similar price range with better drivers and such, and my TV Wonder VE has never had problems. (In linux, it was easy also, readily available drivers.)

I want to like ArchLinux. I really do. I'd love to have a Gentoo-like system that's package-based. But I have so many weird nagging problems that I don't have with Gentoo. Gentoo seems (to me) to be quite polished. There's not much that just doesn't work out of the box (save for editing config files). Arch has always given me some small little problem here and there.

SuSE 9.1 has been growing on me, but the package selection is a little thin. It's still a pretty good system, I think. I definitely like it a lot more than Fedora or Mandrake.

Well, its official: my linux install has been wiped. And no, I haven't given up entirely on linux, I need time to gather my thoughts and perhaps read a good book on it.

Besides, i needed a safer place to keep my important documents, and my linux HD was a perfect solution. I've lost many a good file to HD corruption, so I was hoping that keeping the most important stuff on another drive would be a good solution.

Reinstalled windows (didn't format though) didn't help any.

Does the fdisk /mbr command work on winxp, and are there any risks involved?

[edit] ttried it, fixed. Thx.

I'm fairly sure there's a lilo command to uninstall itself. Though i don't remember it at the moment.

the problem is now fixed.

Linux was nice and liberating, but I could never make it print or network the way I wanted it to, despite your guy's help.

I may try it again later when I have more time.
school sort of limits how much time i can use to explore linux, right now my goals are to get stuff done amazingly fast instead of spending all day messing with my OS.

Windows XP keeps insulting my intelligence. Are you sure you want to SHOW the SYSTEM FILES? Are you sure you want to DISABLE the FIREWALL? Are you sure you want to SHARE this FILE? Are you sure you want to INSTALL this UNSIGNED driver?

Yes, I bloody well am sure, now shut up.

The good thing is that after a bit of shouting, XP does shut up, and all those warning messages go whimpering away in the corner.

The only thing I preferred about 98 was that I had more control over networking, I knew exactly what was going on. In XP it's all a bit of voodoo magic.

But XP is so totally plug-and-play it's fantastic. Until I installed 98 on one machine, I hadn't realised how convenient it was to be able to install windows and voila! I have working graphics drivers, network card drivers, USB drivers, everything. On 98, I had to try and find drivers for everything.

Oh and System Restore is a life-saver.

Are there any Linux projects driven towards plug and play? They're sort of a good eight years behind in that department.

Most of the larger commercial distros (Redhat/Fedora, Mandrake, SuSE..) will automatically detect new hardware and try to load the required kernel modules. So, yes. I can't think of the actual software behind it (hotplug maybe?)..

I would, gandalf, but I have to pay 2000+ dollars on a computer I'd never use just to be able to try it.

You could get an iBook for $1000 or so.

Fedora Core 2 auto-detects new hardware on bootup before entering the GUI. It configured my USB laser printer for me perfectly fine when I plugged it in. I also tried pulling my sound card out (just for fun) and reactivating my onboard audio (nForce 2), and it auto-detected and configured that too.
