Quitting cold turkey
2009-11-18, 5:33 PM #1
This isn't a thread about refrigerated fowl.

I decided that I needed to quit caffeine. I've been taking in the equivalent of 6-7 cups of coffee (8oz cups) a day. I wake up with headaches about every other day. Anyway, I'm certain caffeine addiction is the reason - I've been through this before about 8 years ago.

Anyway, I'm on Day 2, and my head is killing me. *sighs*

Share how you are a slave to your addictions. Or something.

Well, good news is that it shouldn't last more than a few days. Try aspirin for headache? Maybe Excedrin (which is aspirin + acetaminophen)?

I stick my turkey in the fridge without even carving it. I just can't get enough of cold turkey.

It is supposedly better to ween yourself off caffiene than quit cold turkey.

I think Excedrin (well, some varieties of it) have caffeine too. But yeah, acetaminophen and ibuprofen are my friends.

Take some cocaine in the morning instead.

I did this in April.
It sucked.

acetetaaminophpenenepnepnpehpephepne never really worked for me, but ibuprofen always has. Different for everybody.

Good for you quitting caffeine. I'm always talking about how unhealthy I believe caffeine addiction is.

Morphine?

Good luck though. I was getting pretty bad with caffeine too, it's a real killer to cut off even after a few months of heavy heavy useage (I used to be a Dew + Coffee fiend). Just take some ibuprofen and the like and you'll get through it soon.

I haven't had a significant amount of caffeine in years.

I did quit drinking a few months ago. That was very difficult. And painful.

Why would you want to quit caffeine?

Antony, yea it sucks. Quit once. Was clean for about a year. Don't ever have 'just one' drink again. Doesn't work.

Need to quit again...bleh.

I pour half a gram into a glass of Crown Royal and suck it down every morning. Puts me in the right place.

I actually had a few drinks not too long ago.

I still want to drink every ****ing day, though. It sucks. It makes it a lot more enjoyable when I do occasionally drink. But ever since I stopped getting wasted every day I feel much better about life.

Because of the constant headaches. I was having headaches all the time several years ago, and after some MRIs and other brain scans, they didn't find anything wrong. They eventually decided I should give up caffeine, and the headaches finally went away.

I've never noticed any effects from taking caffeine.

Yeah, but have you ever had a Coca Cola after smoking a bowl? It's ****ing amazing. I'd start drinking caffeine again if I still smoked pot.

I avoid it mostly. Occasional cup of black or green tea, but otherwise no caffeine for me.

On the rare occasion I drink something with a large amount of caffeine in it, I get a headache pretty quickly after.

I had the same problem... Haven't had caffiene in over 4 years already, lol.

I never pay attention to when I drink caffeine, honestly. I just had Dr. Pepper today. Whenever I go out to eat and drink tea it usually has caffeine, but I can go without it for a day. Most of my caffeine comes from soda and tea, since I don't drink coffee.

Congratulations on staying sober dude. I remember that thread from awhile ago, its good to hear your doing alright with it.

I have a pretty bad caffeine addiction, rather then a migraine I just feel like complete crap without it. Very lethargic and light headed. I am not a coffee drinker so I mostly get my caffeine from sodas which I have been trying to avoid lately.

As far as pick me ups go, those 5 hour energy shots work wonders.

To get you of the energy drinks:

try to eat something with monosaccharide sugars in the morning. Glucose might be your best shot (also known as grape sugar or corn sugar). Then during the day try to eat fruit and things like potatoes for polysaccharides and sucrose when you're feeling tired.

Basically monosaccharides are ready to be used in your cells, they don't need any type of processing, and polysaccharides are first converted in sucrose, and sucrose takes a longer time to be converted in monosaccharides.

In other words: grape/corn sugars give you an almost instantaneous short boost of energy, and polysaccharides take a longer time but they're 'giving energy' for a longer period of time. Not too much however, or you'll become quite fat...

I don't think any of that advice is very good. Fruit is good for you, but you don't want to replace a need for caffeine with simple sugars and starch.

I drink a lot of caffeinated drinks, but I can go weeks without touching one without ill effects. Caffeine just doesn't affect me. I could drink sodas all day and go to bed an dream happy happy thoughts for the night. Anyway, I find Powerade helps for pickups. Its got vitamin B and from what I've read on the bottles, seems to have more healthier stuff in it than Gatorade.

I didn't want to imply all he needed to do was eating sugar. I had a friend who was 'addicted' to energy drinks, he just couldn't live without them. He basically had a caffeine addiction, his doctor advised him to keep his bloodsugar at a constant value to make up for the energy dips...

You're going to experience them, alot...

I went through a period of about 3 weeks in college when I never slept more than four hours; I was drinking several Monsters/Amps/coffees a day just to keep functioning. Ever since then caffeine has never really had an effect on me, even if I go a month or more without drinking any. Somehow, though, I've never been addicted, which I'm pretty thankful for...

I NEVER get caffeine headaches unless i'm using the computer. I like to drink like 5 cups of coffee a day, but I;m fine without it.

UNLESS I'm staring at the computer.

Computer + no caffeine = headache

Hell no. Five Hour Energy is the brand name, google it. It's basically just a ****load of vitamin B.

Headaches weren't too bad today. I hope this trend continues, but I'm told days 3 & 4 are the worst.

Ya, idk why you don't just ease out.

A lot of people limit their consumption to one coffee a day.

If you get used to that, then it's not that hard to stop completely.

It's easier to just quit something cold turkey. If you're just cutting down, it's easy to say you'll have another half cup of coffee, or just one more cigarette or just one more eighth of blow and end up consuming more than you were before you were trying to wean.

Simple logic.

The caffeine is giving me headaches. Why ease off and continue to have headaches for a week or more, when I can quit cold turkey (where the heck did that phrase come from anyway) and be done with the headaches in a few days?

I assume you are referring to addictions where withdrawal isn't permanently damaging or lethal.

That's pretty much limited to alcohol, benzos and barbiturates. Quitting a heavy dependence on those things isn't like quitting a bad habit.
