Who else is job-hunting?

Inspired by Greenboy.

I tested for Scottsdale AZ PD on Saturday and interviewed on Monday - now I hurry up and wait. 244 tested, 80+ failed..so we're down to about 160 people for 3 positions.

If Scottsdale doesn't work out, you could try Mesa -- I've heard they're hiring.

I have been the past few months. Got a couple calls back. Had 1 phone interview that turned into an in person interview. Followed by interview #2. Felt really good about it too, only to get shot down. The whole process took 3 ****ing months. *******s.

I'll start hunting again when finals are over.

Hopefully this time around I'll get more interviews with firms who want to hire me and fewer with firms that just want to talk about football with me.

I've been job hunting for forever. I've gotten what MAY be a decent break recently. Don't want to count my chickens before they hatch but keep your fingers crossed for me - I really would like health insurance almost as much as I would like to move out of my parent's house :P
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Yar.

Worked at a craptacular customer service job at a outsource company here called Sutherland Global, got laid off before I could qualify for any kind of unemployment. Real nice of them.

Almost got hired for a MET position at home depot, would have been a sweet gig. Interviewed and was offered the job, did my drug test and never heard back from them. Called every day for two weeks straight. Turns out someone in HR dropped the ball and never called me back., thus I missed the training class. The next training class for that position was in January. Yeahhh..

Got an interview for Verizon two weeks ago. Went in and everything looked really promising, until they dropped the bomb on me that I had to train for a month in Syracuse NY which is a good two hours away from here. With no money on hand, and no desire to put the rest of my life on hold for a month, I respectfully declined. The next local one is in February.

I'm having such luck.. I need to work so I can finish my college credits and ship out to Berklee. This unemployment BS is killing me.

Narp. I'd love to complain about my tool of a boss, but I'm well aware I'm lucky to have a job within walking distance of my house.

Bingo. Plus I'm bored, houses are too expensive here, and I'd get a huge raise.

They were hiring 25, I think - but all new officers, no lateral transfers. I've also heard not-so-great things about Mesa PD, so I'm trying to stick with Tempe and Scottsdale.

Now that my season as a backcountry ranger is over (June to mid-October, for some reason, not very many people go into the woods during the winter in the Adirondacks or else I'd have a year-round job), I am currently seeking employment for the winter! Had a couple of options that I thought would be my ticket to gainful employment, but they didnt work out. :(
2009-11-19, 7:21 AM #14
I've been trying to get a job since June :(

I applied for a mental health specialist position at University Behavioral Healthcare at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey back in January, got called into an interview in September, was hired in the beginning October and I'll start my first real day next Monday, hopefully. However, so far the job is only per diem and I can't get a straight answer whether or not I can ever expect to be taken in full time.

Otherwise, I interviewed with a place that does genome mapping in Camden two weeks ago, but I've yet to hear back, even though I was told I would by the end of last week. My guess is that they chose someone else and they're not bother calling back the others. That's really ****ing disrespectful. I know entry level workers are the **** of the earth, but if I'm going to drive 2 1/2 hours for an interview, interview for 4, the least they could do is spend 5 minutes to call me back. It's not the first interview where that has happened in, either. Thugs from the Department of Labor should hit employers who do that in the kneecaps with heavy wooden dowels. Is there some kind of hotline for that?

I thought I had a good shot, too, because they were the one that initially called me, from an old resume that was lying around some site. Maybe I came off as too confident.

I'm currently holding a job, but I have been looking for work a couple hours north of here so I can move back where I have more friends and family. I have been sending out a few resume's a month for the past 5 months without a single call back :(

My best shot so far has been a defense contractor in the panhandle. One of my dad's co-workers has a son working there. Interview went great, was relayed back that they liked me a lot, but they still decided to go with another candidate at the time. They plan on opening more positions, but with the ominous "Soon™" label, and I'll be considered for those as well.

But I've applied to dozens of engineering firms as well as part-time crap jobs around town.

I've got a BS in Mechanical Eng, geared towards Aerospace. Trying to get into aero/defense, I'm very good at 3D CAD work (Inventor, SolidWorks, etc). Problem is finding entry-level openings, although they're slowly starting to show up again.

I've already got a year's work thanks to RIT's co-op program, which is good since I've got money stashed to start paying back student loans this month :\

Hah! That was my original major at RIT. Left there with an associates in Engineering Science with a concentration in Mechanical Engineering after 4 years of jumping around from major to major before I decided up majoring in Forestry at a different school.

Man if baseball didn't start in February I'd be out there a lot. I'm actually thinking of applying to a Ranger job out in the midwest. Do you enjoy your job?

Other than that I'm starting my job hunt as I'm (hopefully haha!) graduating this Spring. Got a few jobs I'm interested in but with my lack of career-related experience it might be pretty difficult. I feel like every single one of my classmates knew what they wanted to do and did internships for it. Now I'm looking for paralegal type jobs and will have to kick *** in some interviews to get them so I can make some money before I try for law school.

I enjoy it immensely, but it gets very, very lonely sometimes. I have a 180,000 acre wilderness area, and I'm the only person assigned to patrol it on a regular basis. Sometimes (especially during bug season when not too many people are in the woods) 4 or 5 days will go by without me seeing a single other person.

There's three different types of park/forest ranger jobs. One is backcountry patrol, which is what I do. These are the guys that are actually spending nights out on the woods, either camping or staffing ranger outposts. The other two are law enforcement, which is basically when you're a police officer who specializes in dealing with violations concerning state/federal/public land use regulations, and interpretation, which is when you give tours.

What kind of degree do you have, or what degree are you working towards? Law enforcement rangers need to have a degree, usually either an associates in forestry or a bachelors in anything with a certain amount of credit hours in forestry/environmental science/criminal justice. Undergraduates who are working towards a degree in forestry, and who have completed a certain number of credits, can usually meet the requirements for a backcountry or interpretive job without actually having a degree yet. You do need to have a certain number of credit hours in forestry or environmental science though.

I'm sorry, but **** you. AZ state/cities have been cutting education and services and hiring new cops for too long. More schools, less cops.

And I've been out of work since March and no one will hire me.

@DSettahr - I will have a B.A. in Sociology so I wouldn't be able to be a law enforcement ranger. I still think doing the backcountry patrol would be really cool though. It sounds tough, but also sounds like quite an experience.

Although I am going to eventually head towards a law degree hopefully specializing in environmental law. So maybe I could do the law enforcement one then.

I've been sending out a lot of resumes, but haven't gotten any interviews. Kind of discouraging. However, I have a decent retail job that pays the bills and such.

I just finished a six month co-op at Lenel Systems International as a software engineer. They want me to come back for full time after I graduate. Unfortunately, I don't think their field is really what I want to do. But we'll see.

I flip burgers. We get several applications every day, and we're not hiring. Many of the applicants have college degrees. Kind of sad.

Yup; Social Studies teacher which in this area doesn't help to begin with. Graduated last year November, and continue to look for spots. I mostly spend the time working a part-time gig along with subbing.

I went from architecture to civil engineering major. I have an internship (paid too) in NYC in a small engineering firm. If I finish up bachelor's degree in CE, I could continue working for the firm to build up experience. Yay.

But there is so much bureaucratic crap in NYC when it comes to construction. Oh well. :v:
