My student position will not be available after I graduate this spring, so I either have to get a job at a new school if I decide to go on, or I'll be out in the real job market. The consolidation of our news stations and the way editors are rarely hired who aren't also personalities and camera operators decreases my likelihood of getting a job in the one thing my tiny certificate qualifies me for. I need to get a vehicle before I think about moving to a place with more editing positions that don't require physical ability. Buying a van with accessible modifications is expensive. I'll probably go on to a new degree out of aversion to this mountain of a problem. I just have to find something I can physically do this time.

Scottsdale (or, Snottsdale as I call it) is a pretty nice place.

I'm surprised so many people are looking for work. Have most of you guys recently graduated from college and just haven't been able to find work? As I mentioned in previous threads, I got laid off in December and did contract work from January through August for a number of companies before finally landing two full-time job offers towards the end of August. Hang in there, things should pick up again. If not, especially you software guys, you can bolster your resumes doing some open-source work. I landed 3 separate contracting gigs through ads posted on a local perl group mailing list and postings on craigslist.

Also if you're java people, Amazon.com up here (Seattle) is constantly hiring people. I'm not sure if they do relocation.

I graduated in May - I think a lot of us are recent graduates. And while the degree is important, a lot of places want both a degree AND several years of experience. Of course, we can't get the experience if they won't let us work.

At least - that's how it is with marketing and a lot of other business related fields.

Yeah, that seems to be my main problem right now, is that very few people are looking to hire entry-level. Most postings are senior/manager positions.

I've even seen [what should be] entry level job postings asking for experience. Since there's a bigger pool of candidates, they seem to be raising that particular expectation

That's why I kick myself for not doing more out of class work in school. Most entry level research jobs (both bench work and clinical) are looking for people who worked on projects in school and have strong academic recommendations and if you don't, you're going to be close to SOL, since most labs aren't going to let non-students volunteer. I'm sure it works the same way in other fields, as well.

Software is nice in that way because of the popularity of open source projects. In addition, a lot of people make small utilities and sell on the side -- iphone games, shareware programs, etc. You CS people can seriously program an iphone game in a month.

Thank you for applying for the Police Officer position with the Scottsdale Police Department. After careful consideration, the Department has chosen not to continue you in the hiring process

Due to the high volume of applicants going through our hiring process, we do not provide additional information concerning the selection process.

Again, thank you for your interest in the City of Scottsdale and I wish you the best of luck in your career endeavors.

Ahwell, I really wanted Tempe anyway.

If you get Tempe you'll be living next to some of my relatives.

I don't mean to be mean at you Jlee. I know you need a job. I'm just getting very frustrated watching my state get ruined.

Oh, like the hiring process from Tempe this summer that got postponed 'till an undetermined time next year? Or the $7 million that Mesa PD cut?

You do realize that officers retire, right? You want a world without cops? Really? Try calling a school instead of 911 and see how that works out for you.
