**** Warning, a bit of language is quoted, if this offends people, I'll edit later***
Well, I thought people in my town were a bit better than this, but they have proven me wrong...

I was on my way to my local video store to rent Madden 2005 (which is good for all you sports buffs) and I notice an unusually large crowd in the parking lot. Apparently, there was a protest going on about homosexuals. A bunch of "Christians" are waving signs like " FAGS ARE GOING TO HELL!"
"DOWN WITH SODOMY!!!!" and stuff like that.
Now, that isn't what steams me. They had their kids, I mean 7-8 year old kids holding those signs as well and yelling at cars. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think homosexualism is right, but man, to each their own. And seriously, protesting about it isn't going to get you on God's side no matter what. I personally think that bigotry is just as bad as a sin, if not worse in most cases. Post your thoughts and lets keep this civil. If you can't post civily and keep your cool, than don't post at all. I don't mind a debate, but it can be down with intellegence instead of insults.

I think it was happydud who coined the term "Scary God People" awhile back. I've always liked it.

I have nothing to add save the fact that if they're going to protest about homosexuals, they might as well protest about the people who cheat on their husbands and wifes too. Is that not a sin as well? Will that not send you to hell?

Christian Homosexual protesters (that sounds wrong, but you know what I mean) are basically people who either don't have the slightest clue about Christianity, or have the reading comprehension skills of a 4th grader.

Sure, Christianity condemns homosexuality (the sin). But these morons condemn the homosexual (the people).

I quote John 3:16-17
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not[/i] send his Son into the world to condem it; but that the world might be saved through him."

Hello? Can these people not read?

This is a perfect example of what I said in one of the other threads: Most Christians do not represent their faith well at all. And it makes Christianity look like something built on condemnation and guilt, when it's not.

Amen.

Low reading comprehension will do this to people.

See, saying "the act of homosexuality is sinful" really isn't clear and doesn't say anything.
What the hell is the 'act of homosexuality'? What is the 'act of heterosexuality'?

I assume you're talking about sodomy, anal sex. So there's nothing wrong with lesbians. And heterosexuals can do that too.

I get a little confused when people say "the act is sinful but the homosexual isn't".
If you hate the 'act', then how can you possibly treat those that commit and follow that 'act' as equals? It's like saying "I hate Islam but I have no problem with Muslims".
If you hate the abstract concept, then you are going to treat the followers of it differently. And hating an abstract concept is a bit difficult really, so you're bound to put a human face on it.

As a god-fearing man, I must admit that I like watching lesbians go at it as much as the next person (which makes me a sinner with the rest of the human race), but in my opinion, the scripture seems to be referring to the act of people of the same sex engaging in sexual activities, period. Personally, I believe that Christians who assume that all homosexuals are going to burn in hell are very likely to end up there themselves. In other words, I agree with DogSRoOL's interpretation on this particular issue.

I'd just like to point out that their motives are not "to get on God's side." It bothers me when people seem to believe that Christians do the things they do for their own personal advancement towards Heaven. In many cases, the goal in mind is not for their own souls, but for the souls of others. In this case, their zeal and energy is a bit misguided, but they're not doing it to just to make God like them. They're doing it because they're trying to save souls (which is not to say that they'll succeed with those tactics).

On another note, I must say I basically agree with them, though I don't agree with their delivery. Just as the signs say, homosexuals are going to hell, and sodomy should be done away with. That said, everyone who struggles with any sin (and that means everyone who ever lived) is on their way straight to hell, and waving a sign around in a parking lot is definately not the solution. The solution is to get to know people one on one, and offer them a message of hope (the Gospel) and show them where they're falling short of God's will in a loving and caring manner ("HOMOSEXUALS ARE GOING TO HELL" is not exactly loving and caring... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif] )

I don't see why 'homosexuality' is an issue when 'sodomy' is the sin. Surely heterosexuals engaging in sodomy are just as 'evil'?

I am unaware of any passages in the Bible forbidding sodomy (if there, please, someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction), but the Bible itself does say that to "lie with a man as you would a woman is an abomination of God," and later says that homosexuals will not be granted access to Heaven.

If you believe in Purgatory, I guess it could be seen that homosexuals are sentenced to eternity in Purgatory, which is an interesting thought.

I'm going to have to disagree with you Sarn. I do believe that most people are or at least try to be good most of the time, but I think that for many of them, the only reason they are good is ego. They do good deeds so that they can feel better about themselves. I'm not saying everyone is like this- yes there are people who are completely unselfish and help others because it is the right thing to do, but for many that isnt the case.

Hmmm. "fags"? That dosent sound very christian to me. They should be trying to convert them. Insultaling them does no good at all. What gay people do is wrong, but those people are handling totaly the wrong way.

I suppose they thought that they never sinned either. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif] If God had saved them them wouldn't they be thankfull and try to save others? Pointless insulting jsut dirves them away. They really aren't handling that the right way.

Very persuasive and insightful, Mort-. I'm disappointed that you didn't expound for half a page.

As to Elana's comment, my understanding of that is basically exactly what other people have posted already, that list as it were is a way to keep people from trying to single out this or that and condemning everyone of it because they'd fall under one or more of the other items in the list, that one isn't necessarily more sinful per se.

Isn't it ironic that it makes more sense for Catholics to allow homosexual clergy than Protestants?

Catholic priests have to be celibate, so a homosexual catholic priest wouldn't be doing anything wrong (assuming they remain celibate).

But Protestant priests are allowed to marry, so a homosexual protestant priest might be doing something wrong.

Yeah. Taken out of context quite nicely, too. The second death is the spiritual death of those who are not of faith in Christ, and are therefore judged by their works.

DogS hit it on the head for me again. And Sarn, I think my post on that is a bit unclear, so I'll clarify as best I can. Really, what I meant with that statement is that they really shouldn't be spreading a "hate message." They should be helping spreading God's message. I personally would rather have everyone else in the world going to Heaven before me, especially my family. Most of my family isn't Christian and do give me a hard time, but I hope my actions do rub off on them (and it does to some extent. My younger brother is now going to church every so often at least). Now, these protesters I feel should be LIVING the Bible instead of just preaching it. Its something that all Christians (including myself) have in common.

Clerical celibacy was introduced around 700 years ago if i recall, and was primarily to combat nepotism [passing church posts down to your children], the whole purity or whatever was pretty incidental. Not to mention that there was absolutely nothing preventing them from having sex or concubines or visiting brothels [some of whom got their whole custom from clerics], just that they couldn't /marry/, and thus any children they had would be bastards instead of heirs.
