Happy Thanksgiving to all the US Massassians! Enjoy a day of gluttony!

Absolutely, Happy Thanksgiving! My daughter is driving in to spend the weekend and my mother will be here too.

I was thinking yesterday that Thanksgiving really is a unique holiday in that it is the only distinctly American religious holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving! I noticed that when I was in France last week that they're now selling turkeys for Thanksgiving at many of the local shops.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about but you could at least throw a "Happy Thanksgiving" in your post so as not to become what you accuse me of being.

From the wikipedia article:

Quote:
Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. It did not become a federal holiday until 1941. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God, but is now primarily identified as a secular holiday.[1]

The First Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive the brutal winter.[citation needed] The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Indians.[2] The feast consisted of fowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. However, the traditional Thanksgiving menu often features turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie.

I don't think Thanksgiving has been about giving thanks to God for a long time. Doubt it even came from trying to make the holiday secular.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving! om nom nom

Well he did say 'distinctly American religious holiday' and not 'distinctly religious American holiday' :)

"The First Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive the brutal winter"

So thanksgiving was in the spring?

Can we NOT piss and moan about religion in a thread for just once?

On a more related note, I was suprised to not hear a single music reference to Michael Jackson in the parade this morning. I would have figured at least one marching band would have covered a MJ tune in memoriam.

Also, it's not just American. Canadians have Thanksgiving as well, although a different day.

Sure but with a somewhat different background and I have no idea if it is the sole Canadian religious holiday.

It's not the sole US religious holiday either. It's called Christmas.

1. I think Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that you can't truly appreciate when you're a kid. It's easy to understand Christmas and Halloween because presents and candy are awesome at any age. I didn't really appreciate how awesome turkey and football are until I got a little older.
2. Tofurkey is an abomination. If you eat it you're a bad person and you should feel bad.
If you think the waiters are rude, you should see the manager.

Christmas is celebrated worldwide and not a distinctily American holiday. Thanksgiving, the one that the United States of America celebrates, is. I thought the distinction was quite clear in my post.

As if Christmas and Thanksgiving are the only religious holidays in the US anyway...

Which as I said isn't a "distinctly American" holiday. Your distinction was clear, it was just wrong.

Yes, actually, they are, nationally at least.

An entire holiday dedicated to food. Best holiday ever!

I dunno. Seems to be one of the only holidays aside from Thanksgiving and Christmas that Target closes for.

Easter's not a US holiday, and it falls on a Sunday. National holidays are placed during the week.

Being a vegetarian is not very human-like.

Also, late but Happy Thanksgiving.
