There are really very few things in this world that I hate more than diamonds.

Glad I don't have to deal with that this year

Nope, but there are some really good deals. I watch Zales and Szul - this is the best deal I've come across in a long time.

I like stones, but not for how much they are. It's a big waste of money in my opinion. Status symbols. I'd rather go pick a gem from the dirt, get it cut and set it myself for a lady.

Right, like clicking the links will tell me if it's a reputable company, what their affiliation is with you, and why are you linking to szul instead of amazon, which seems to have very similar prices.

Hey good idea, JLee. I should totally check that out! Except that you posted here where the woman in my life is naturally going to see.

Fine...if nobody cares, let it die. I'm just trying to help someone out.

To be fair, the deals on some of them are excellent - just looking at the $20-40 stuff.

But people already get funny ideas about me and my roommate

Yes - December 21 2008. It was slightly delayed ("Christmas delivery," but I think I got it on the 27th). If I get jewelery, it's usually from Zale's, but I just ordered from Szul again today.

If you buy diamonds, buy artificial diamonds. Instead of supporting genocide, you can support a fledgling industry that may soon revolutionize computer technology!

Maybe we don't buy stupid, shallow expressions of wealth for our loved ones? :downs:

If I ever bought jewelery even remotely that expensive (looking at the $200+ items) for anyone in my family, I'd be asked to return it.

It's one thing to want to look nice, it's another to pour money into excess.

Yes, because all women are shallow creatures whose emotions are for sale.

Izzy's got plenty of jewellery. She prefers books, scarves, and other more useful stuff to jewellery. In face we're both sort of anti-stuff unless the stuff has a use. Jewellery doesn't serve a useful purpose, especially when she already has plenty.
2009-12-15, 12:37 AM #32
Logically, if you're buying a woman a shiny rock that is indistinguishable from a piece of cut glass to the untrained eye, knowing that it will influence her emotions, then she *is* shallow.

To me this would make her not worth the expense in the first place, but perhaps I'm just being silly for desiring someone a bit more... real.

Well in that case - hell yeah!!

I'm not saying women don't like pretty things, (it depends entirely on the girl) but if you've done something to legitimately piss her off, buying her something shiny isn't going to fix it.

Something edible might. Maybe I am easily bought...

Flowers work too, BUT ONLY if you also just buy her flowers completely at random. If you only buy flowers when you've ****ed up it comes off a shallow gesture: a mere attempt at a get out of jail free card.

I might buy Izzy some flowers tomorrow night - she's out on her work christmas meal, and they'll be nice for her to come home to. :)

Good luck finding a girl who doesn't want a wedding ring.

Re: Flowers. The first time I bought my then-girlfriend (now wife) flowers, she came home, saw them on the table, and was horrified. "What did you do!??!?!?" were the first works out of her mouth (seriously). It took me a while to train her -- "Just because I buy you flowers doesn't mean I did something wrong."

Also, Re: jewelery. I don't know many people who regularly (even yearly) buy anyone jewelery. The last jewelery I bought was my own wedding ring.
2009-12-15, 7:30 AM #39
Brian - totally agree about the jewellery. I bought Iz a bracelet for a wedding present because she asked for one, and that's the last time until she asks for any more.

But she's very flower trained :)

I bought this for my wife. I buy my wife jewelry at least twice each year. Definitely on Valentine's Day & usually on either her birthday or Christmas. It only makes sense to buy jewelry with your girlfriend or wife's birth-stone on her birthday. As a matter of fact, I bought her a Dior ring when we were in Paris just for the hell of it. I'm not a rich guy that can just throw his money around either. We simply don't spend money on things that the average person does (e.g. outrageous cellphone & cable payments or video games) so that we can instead spend money on each-other. We also sell anything that we don't use (books when we finish reading them, etc.). I vowed years ago to never treat my wife like my father treats my mother. She's lucky to get anything for her birthday or Christmas because he always claims that gifts are too expensive but it's always strange how he can afford 5-10 new PC games throughout the year (most of which he'll beat in a week & never sell) or upgrades for his computer.
? :)
