Star Wars in HD
2010-01-05, 7:45 AM #1
While I was vacationing I caught a few minutes of Empire Strikes Back on TV. It was being broadcast in HD and it looked amazing. It didn't seem to be the new "CGI-CRAZY" edition, either (although it's harder to tell in ESB because they didn't modify as many scenes, and the modifications weren't over-the-top with fart and poop jokes and such). How is this possible? I didn't think it ever got released in any HD format (blu-ray or HD DVD), and since GL is a moron, I doubt he'd release the classic "THX remastered" versions instead of the crappy "special editions." How is this possible?

Also, it didn't look upconverted either, it really looked HD.

I thought the masters had been lost or something so there was no possibility of it coming out in HD? I dunno....odd.
woot!

You can get the HD versions (recorded from HDTV streams) from a variety of... not-exactly-legal sources. They look pretty good.

they are "working" on the blurays

but in GL time that means a release date of December 18th 2012

and it will likely be some new even further modified version

As long as a new new version has Han shooting first, it might have some promise :P

I never got what was so wrong with the new version (except for the greedo shooting, bad sound on some occasions, and changing ghostly Anakin to angsty ani)

The choice to encode the letterboxes into the video on the theatrical DVD versions was :downswords:.

Nerd fanboy rage!

Interestingly enough the only changes I utterly despised were the dumb "BRING MY STAR DESTROYER TO BUTT AND NIPPLE" line instead of "Bring my shuttle" in ESB and the horrible Jabba disco song in RotJ.

And of course the reasoning for the Greedo fiasco was that it diminished Han's character development quite a bit but I don't think anyone has actually cared about that reason since 1997, it's just fun 2 h8 lol

Yeah, I hated the stupid song in RotJ. That's about it. The rest of it didn't bother me nearly as much as it does some people, especially when it comes to making the movies more congruent with the prequels.

Yea, true about the song.

The part where they stuffed every shot of Mos Eisley in ANH with stupid ****ing things and slapstick humor pissed me off. Lucas needs to stop making everything into fart and poop jokes.
DO NOT WANT.

that's because those non-anamorphic (that's the term you're looking for) transfers were originally done for laserdisc and VHS

And using those versions was a kick in the balls to anyone who isn't still using a 4:3 TV. :P

Nor I Jep. Apart from those things (ok, and putting the new voice on boba fett) I quite liked the changes - particularly those at Bespin where they opened everything up.
2010-01-05, 1:23 PM #15
They replaced Boba Fett's original lines with voiceovers by the guy who played Jango Fett... and stuck Hayden Christiansen into the end of RotJ... those are my biggest complaints.

I've got 5 of the Star Wars movies in HD, pretty damn impressive....although the extra detail does make you look a bit closer at some of the materials making up the Millennium Falcon in A New Hope :P

The only one I don't have is Phantom Menace as apparently the master is **** with barely more detail than DVD. I can live with this as I prefer the KHS fan edit version of that movie anyway.

Jaiph, are those the original editions of Ep 4-6 or the THX mastered versions or the "special editions?" I would love to get ahold of them if they are either 1 or 2 (don't care about the special editions).
2010-01-05, 1:34 PM #18
Also, watching the theatrical versions remastered in HD on blu-ray would probably be a painful experience anyway. I watched Star Trek: TMP on blu-ray the other day, and it just made the dated special effects stand out even more. Blue/Green screens stood out even more, and usage of models was painfully obvious. That said, the non-special effects shots looked amazing and the audio in TrueHD was pretty awesome.
2010-01-05, 2:13 PM #19
Brian - sorry mate, but Greedo shoots first in these :( I'm not sure we'll see HD versions of the original versions till either Lucas is dead or on the third or fourth dip blu-ray release (bah!).

Mind you I wish the upcoming LOTR blurays were taking this approach of newest versions first...they are only releasing the original theatrical version of LOTR on bluray this year. Probably saving the extended editions for a tie-in with The Hobbit in a couple of years. Bastards.

Darth - haha yeah agreed, I got a bluray copy of North by Northwest last month....in some scenes (such as the classic cropduster bit) the extra detail is amazing, but in the nighttime scenes at the end of the movie on Mt Rushmore the painted forest background was really obvious.

Suck. I'm pretty sure the HD ones on TV were the originals. I guess I'm not completely sure, but I'm pretty sure. Cloud City definitely felt claustrophobic.
2010-01-05, 2:26 PM #21
Hmm if they were the originals then I'm sure someone would have capped them and encodes for them should appear in the next month or two, that would be sweet!

Didn't George Lucas say he wants to rerelease the movies in 3D too?
2010-01-05, 4:41 PM #23
The reason you saw those so-called "poop and fart jokes" is because George Lucas is going into a second childhood.

That'd be right. The cash cow is getting sore nipples.

I only remember poop and fart jokes in Episode 1.

The "special edition" versions had it too, specifically, ep4 had farting animals around mos eisley, if I remember correctly.

Can someone just pry George Lucas away from Star Wars? Like some sort of specialized restraining order?

i wonder if anyone at the criterion collection has contemplated hiring a hitman to take GL out to smooth out the process of getting permission to do a proper restoration and release of the theatrical versions

It's kind of morbid, but I'll admit that I am curious to see the direction that Star Wars is taken after George Lucas passes on and control of the franchise is given to someone else.
2010-01-05, 7:52 PM #31
He's brainwashed everyone anyway -- why would they take a different direction w/all the money they're raking in? Have you ever seen interviews with the "lore" guy who tries to control all the EU content and make it mesh with the movies? He is just as full of himself as GL.

I agree that the prequels were jacked up and he shouldn't have tampered with 4-6 in most cases, BUT, he's elbow deep into The Clone Wars, and it kicks ***. I think Dave Filoni has helped temper George's idiot side. I would completely expect Dave Filoni to take charge of the Empire when George passes too.

I heard the guy taking over for him is the guy in charge of the new Clone Wars animated series.

Can't really confirm that though..

Edit: Guess it's Dave Filoni mentioned above :) I remember seeing them talking about it in one of the DVD special features or something that he was going to be Georges successor. Again, can't really confirm it. xD

Is it possible to get hold of the pre-remastered versions? (other than obscure second-hand vhs) I always found the odd graininess they had due to wear/tear was like some kind of accidental filter effect. No other movie had anything like it.
2010-01-06, 7:01 AM #35
Do you thinks its possible in our lifetime that Star Wars will rise again, say like a movie based upon an expanded universe novel?
He who controls the spice controls the universe-
2010-01-06, 7:07 AM #36
GL's gotta be knocked off first, he's already said there's to be no more actual movies. He wouldn't do it on EU anyway, he'd make up something else and then the EU would have to retcon the movies so it works. As far as Lucas is concerned, EU doesn't exist.

I've already read reports about him being interested in doing EPs 7-9. Ugh. CGI Ewoks?
2010-01-06, 7:19 AM #38
Well, those reports have been around since the 1980s and Lucas himself has stated that the Star Wars story is ultimately the story of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. With him dying in RotJ, EP7-9 are simply impossible.

And I fully agree with him for once.

There's not a lot of post-RotJ stuff that I actually care about that much, JA's a borderline case but the current Cade Skywalker crap is just urgh.

Even though SW stuff set before ANH interest me a lot more for some reason, if done right like KotOR. Hm!

I'd actually like to see the Thrawn trilogy made as movies.
